;) Hands Down, The Quiet Man. This is what I think made John Wayne into a legend. He was big, but this put him into the next level. And Maureen O'Hara is totally hot.

Personally, my favorite is They Were Expendable.

LET'S SEE...

1) McLintock! - - classic John Wayne
2) The Undefeated - - classic John Wayne
3) Chisum - - again, classic John Wayne - these first 3 display his toughness and humor
very well. He basically just plays himself in these movies.
4) The Quiet Man - - must have a pint while watching this one! Awesome cast!
5) The Shootist - - In my opinion - one of his best acting - Oscar material??? Should have been.
6) Rio Bravo - - we all love this one
7) Angel and the Badman - I wonder if Harrison Ford's "Witness" was a bit influenced by this one????
8) The Cowboys - - great story - great acting by all.
9) True Grit - - Great character acting - facial expressions - - again, this one has grit and humor.
10) North To Alaska - - When John Wayne's character flips the table over in a
fit of rage after hearing what's going on inside the "Honeymoon Cabin"
was just too funny! He did a great job with humor. Some great lines in this one too.

Close to making the list at # 10: The Horse Soldiers - I love the Duke's acting in this.

Of course, the list changes-except for the top 3.

1) EL DORADO- Great buddy movie, everything about this movie is so comforting. Despite the fact that it's about old pals facing old age. The movie that made me a John Wayne fan for life.

2) THE SEARCHERS- Powerful stuff, Duke's best performance, IMO. There's so much more hidden meaning I notice each time I see it.

3) THE SHOOTIST- The greatest final performance any actor ever gave. The term is oft-used, but Duke really was a living legend.

4) DONOVAN'S REEF- More bawdy fun, wish to hell I woulda had an "Uncle Guns"!

5) McLINTOCK!- John Wayne was the most underrated comic actor of his era.

6) THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER- Watch out for that axe handle, George Kennedy! :headbonk:

7) THE COMMANCHEROS- Great big-hearted theme by Elmer Bernstein brings it all home.

8) IN HARM'S WAY- A guilty pleasure; Great cast and Duke is named Rock Torrey!

9) RIO GRANDE- The "forgotten" chapter in Ford's Cavalry Trilogy, I like it best of the three.

10) THE ALAMO- Duke's "baby", I just had to put it here.

My favorites....

1. RIO BRAVO

2. EL DORADO

3. RIO LOBO (one that both pro and amateur critics seem to hate... I don't care, I think it's a fun movie!)

4. THE DARK COMMAND (I think it's his most under-rated Western)

5. THE COMANCHEROS

6. THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER

7. WAR WAGON

8. TRUE GRIT

9. CHISUM

10. BIG JAKE

Of course I like his more dramatic westerns too (The Searchers, Stagecoach, The Shootist, etc.) But when I want to unwind and kickback, I need something fun, and his action-westerns are some of the best)

Number one with me would be "The High and the Mighty" although I still don`t know why it has never been released..Next favorite is definitely "The Searchers" ..
Beyond that, all on the list are exceptionally outstanding and difficult,if not impossible,to rank.. :)

The Quiet Man would top my list but The Searchers and True Grit would be close behind.

1. The Searchers - Speilberg says (and I agree) it's the greatest movie of all time! The Duke is so convincing as Ethan Edwards, that many people believed him to BE the character, and thought he was a racist because of that role.

2. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon - Should have been an Oscar winner for the Duke. Anyone who says he couldn't act never saw this movie (or any other for that matter)

3. Rio Grande - Duke and Maureen O'Hara - The first of the 5 they made together + the last of the cavalry trilogy, and the movie that made the Quiet Man a reality.

4. The Quiet Man - One of the most beautiful movies ever made. This picture was a complete family affair for several of the cast.

5. Fort Apache - Duke, Henry Fonda, and a supporting cast like no other. The scene with the Sergeants busted back to privates at the manure pile after being drunk the night before is just a scream!

6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Dark. Edgy. NOT a typical western. The FIRST time the Duke EVER said PILGRIM in a movie.

7. Trouble Along the Way - The Duke in a non-typical role that is well worth the watching! Marie Winsor is a total witch, and she plays it up effortlessly B)

8. McLintock - Duke & Maureen O'Hara - The Taming of the Shrew set in the old west! He shows what comic timing he had! He shows a very tender side when talking to Stephanie Powers about expressing love between a man and a women.

9. They Were Expendable - This film showed what great range the Duke had. It helped cement the image of the likable tough guy we would were all growing to love.

10. Stagecoach - The role that really set things in motion. He really showed that he had chops as an actor, but he still had much, much more to give.

Hi,
I didn't vote in this poll before, but by objective and subjective reasons my vote goes to The Searchers - the film I consider best western of all time.
But after all top ten for me goes very much close to each other and it is hard to decide which movie will be second, which 3d and which 10th.
My personal favorite is Angel and Badman, but I truly love Horse Soldiers - the first Duke movie I ever saw, Rio Grande and Fort Apache - gives be strong and lasting impression when ever I watch them. And how can we forget The Man who Shot Liberty Valance - the darkest western with it's deeps. From the war movies my favorites are Sands of Iwo Jima and They Were Expandable. And of course his Oscar winning True Grit. And I like very much Tall in the Saddle and Hondo for the strong character he depicts. And one of my favorites as well is Big Jake. Here I must stop, becouse it is already more then 10, but all dear to my heart. And I forget to add The Quiet Man and Rio Bravo!
It's very hard to choose only 10!

I have mentioned this on at least one other thread but I have watched Donovans Reef more ofton then any other JW. I like something about every JW film. Yes there are some I have only watched twice but I wouldn't want to not have them. At first it was partly about having all his feature films and over time the bonus is that it has helped me develop my understanding of his talent and diversity.

1. Rio Bravo - love the interaction between the Duke and Stumpy Walter Brennan) Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickenson are good as well.

2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - a great, great John Ford western - I love the Duke's character in this.

3. The Shootist - JW's last film - what a way to go out - and reunites Jimmy Stewart and the Duke again.

4. Chisum - perhaps it's not the most accurate depiction of the events surrounding Billy The Kid and the Lincoln County War, but it's a damn entertaining film.

5.The Searchers - not much to say - it's a classic.

6. Red River - another classic in the same vein as The Searchers.

7.The Quiet Man - a different type of John Wayne film, but very enjoyable.

8. McLintock - just a fun film to watch - I always watch it if I'm flipping channels and see it on.

9. True Grit - Rooster Cogburn is a great character.

10. Rooster Cogburn - what a pairing of two screen legends.

easy this - my favourite john wayne movie has to be Rio Bravo - i love it - i ve watched it about 6 times now and even bought copies for family members and friends at work so they would watch it too
he is just sooooo sexy in this film and i love walter brennan (in a purely platonic way) too.
the whole ethos of the film just grabs me - taking responsibility for doing what he has to do, looking after his friends, not relying on anyone - could never get sick of watching it
