Another interesting feature of the McCandles Texas forum at Yahoo is Hey Art! wherein someone poses a question to Sheriff Art, and in his inimitable style, he finds the answer to these many queries. Below, I am reposting one I thought might engage your attention.

Chester

Subject: Hey Art! What about Batman?

I received this email recently and wanted to share it with the group. I hope you find it of interest.

Hey Art!
You always talk about there being a John Wayne connection. Could you help me out with this one? A friend of mine bet me I couldn't find 3 connections to John Wayne and the TV series "Batman" (1966-1968). He said that he had found 3 but I could only find 2. Can you give me a hand?
Just a bit puzzled,
Pete

Holy Hard Challenges Pete!,

You're right, I do say, "There is always a John Wayne connection" even though it is getting harder to find one in projects being made some 24 years after his death. But something made during his lifetime normally does.

"Batman" is no exception. Here is what I found:

"Batman" (1966-1968) TV Series and
"Batman" (The feature film which had all the TV cast) (1966)

In the Main Cast:

Alan Napier, who played the butler Alfred Pennyworth, appeared in "Big Jim McLain" (1952) with the Duke.

Neil Hamilton, who played Commissioner James Gordon, appeared in "Mother Machree" (1928) with the Duke.

Nelson Riddle who has a screen credit for original music on the sound track of "Batman" also did the sound track for "El Dorado" (1967) that starred the Duke, of course.

Among the Villains:

Burgess Meredith, who played the Penguin, appeared in "In Harms Way" (1965) with the Duke.

Cesar Romero, who played the Joker, appeared in "Donovan's Reef" (1963)
with the Duke.

Lee Meriwether, who played Catwoman in the 1966 feature film, appeared with the Duke in "The Undefeated" (1969).

Otto Preminger, who was one of three actors to play Mr. Freeze, directed the Duke in "In Harms Way" (1965)

Eli Wallach, who also appeared as Mr. Freeze, was in the film "How the West was Won" (1962) with the Duke.

George Sanders, who was the third actor to play Mr. Freeze, was in "Allegheny Uprising" (1939) with the Duke.

THE HIDDEN CONNECTION:

I am very proud of uncovering this little bit of forgotten knowledge:

"Holy Irish Connection Batman!"

Charles B. Fitzsimons, the brother of Maureen O'Hara and who appeared
with the Duke in "The Quiet Man" (1952) playing Hugh Forbes (the IRA
leader), was the Assistant Producer on "Batman" the TV series and the
full length feature film in 1966.

Now that is what I call a John Wayne connection!

I hope this helped, Pete.

See you along the trail,

Art

Hey that's great info Chester! Enjoyed the post. Now I got one for ya. John Wayne's connection to "The Little Rascals", and you can't use Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer. This ought to be easy for you, because there are two others than Switzer (that I know of).

Just for fun, I was browsing some of the real old threads, and discovered that I never answered this challenge. I must confess that I didn't have an answer off the top of my head, but figured it was most likely some of the girls or women in Little Rascals who would later appear with John Wayne, so I took advantage of IMDb's Joint Venture search engine, to come up with the following information -

Here are the titles which credit the individuals

* Shirley Jean Rickert (played an uncredited part in Little Rascals)
* John Wayne

1. 'Neath the Arizona Skies (1934)
2. In Old Oklahoma (1943)

Here are the titles which credit the individuals

* Margaret Mann (played the old Grandma in Little Rascals)
* John Wayne

1. Annie Laurie (1927)
2. Conflict (1936)
3. Four Sons (1928)
