This topic may be best suited for the ladies of the board, but I think guys can appreciate Duke's softer side as well. Thought it would be fun to discuss your favorite romantic scenes, and also find out the scenes/movies which you think showed off his good looks.

To start it off, I will say that anything with Maureen O'Hara is great, but to be specific the Quiet Man scene in the cemetary is awesome. So much is said between them without speaking a word. The rain helps to also qualify this as one of the scenes in which John Wayne looked great. The wet shirt shows him off very well.

Duchess,
I would say that the Duke looked Hot in Stagecoach but I agree his greatest sex appeal in the Quiet Man tops the scale. In Big Jim McLain not one of the Dukes better liked movies, the Duke showed how light and graceful he was on his feet dancing with Nancy Olson. Just to watch the Duke dance in this movie makes up for the rest of it. Then you can go to McLintock as you said earlier anything with Maureen O'Hara is just great.

FYI: ;)

Did You Know That John Wayne Was An Excellent Ballroom Dancer?

Forgot about that in Big Jim McLain. Was there other movies where he danced with his leading ladies? That was great, Monique, and great to have you on the board.

Cheers Hondo B)

well jw fans esspecailly the american ones not to say he looks sexy because im not that kind but the american uniforms of the forces are i feel some of the best looking uniforms in the world but most of all the whites of the navy jw looked great in and as far as his dancing is concerned it was a traddition of that era to learn to dance and he was good at that too, my favourite would be with shirley temple in fort apache although he wasnt having a romantic sene with he maureen o,hara was i feel his best co star cause they looked so good together the other he looked good with was Patricia Neal, to hit a bit of humor he looked good in his red undies while having a shave with his gun belt on in the war wagon.

you should have a look at trouble along the way for a soft jw as he plays a single dad who loves his daughter. but for straight out sex appeal nothing beats his dress whites in his navy movies what a bum mmmmmm good enough to eat :D

I agree that he is good in Big Jim McLain. There is a good scene in that when he and the leading woman are sitting in a restaurant and he says something like "I can hardly keep my hands off you." Oh, to be in her shoes.

Another favorite of mine for showing off his good looks is Donovan's Reef. John Wayne is coming out of the water, wearing shorts, and the camera gives us a close up of his legs. Not bad.

A uniform always adds something to a man, and on John Wayne it gave something extra to a guy that was already above par. His dress whites were very complimentary. I also like a particular outfit in The Wings of Eagles. He is wearing it when his son dies. He looks so good in it, and I remember it showing off his eyes.

I would say the shootist. Not because he look young and fit because he didn't. But he had the dignified appearance of a man who had come full circle in his life and understood why. I think that carried over into his personal life at that time. Its kind of looking at your mom and dad as they reached the latter time of their life and they have proved thmselves, raised their kids and have come to the realization that it was time to stop or at least slow down and look at the world.

The words I would put with his image in the shootist
dignified, ethical, values, trust, old friend.

OK. I could really make this a long post. I agree with everyone else that he always looked awesome in his Navy dress whites. I also love when they show his legs in Donovan's Reef.

There is another dancing scene in The Fighting Seabees I believe where he does the jitterbug, and quite well I might add.

The cemetary scene in The Quiet Man could melt the heart of any woman. It's one of the best romantic scenes in any movie ever.

It's not usually listed as one of his top films, but I've always thought that he was completely handsome in Jet Pilot. He's in the uniform, there's lots of steamy scenes with Janet Leigh, and even a few inuendos here and there. Complete sex appeal in this movie in my opinion. ;)

Boy-o-boy, ya really have this board steaming now, girls!
Some of you even sign their posts with their real female names now!
That's an interesting topic for a man because, of course, we don't look at good ole Duke from that side (or are some of us? won't go into that).
I remember reading one of his schoolmates said in an interview that he really was a dish at college - and that she found he looked the best BEFORE he even entered the movies.

And there was the female shopkeeper who wanted to whip me for asking in her shop for JW photos - because she is a leftist, feminist and so on - and she suspected everybody asking for JW stuff to be a reactionist - but then, she suddenly melted away when she said: Of course, I LOVED him in Stagecoach!

itdo,
As a twenty-five year old black woman I have always enjoy that interesting reaction when a gentleman visits and he sees my collection of John Wayne movies. Why is that? ( I have posted my list of movies on an earlier post about 10 minutes ago) Anyway I find it for a good laugh.
Yes even us girls love the Duke.

Monique ;)

P.S. you go girlfriends keep up them great postings :P

Another "dusty" thread that might garner some comment from the ladies who have joined the board in the past year . . . .

As for me, maybe because I'm fifty now, I find Duke in his movies of the fifties and sixties quite attractive . . . hm-m-m, Chester kind of looks like him . . . maybe that's why JW looks so good to me . . . :hyper: .

I don't want to get too involved in this topic as its one for the girls but I do remember watching a clip of John Wayne from Red River (when he played Dunson in his earlier years) at school and some of the girls were quite smitten by him.

There is just something sexy about a man who has strong morals and ethics but at the same time secure enough to let his softer vulnerable side show. The fact that he had the rugged good looks didn't hurt either. Loved the eyes and smile.

agree completely - it s his rugged good looks, toughness, strong moral values, his walk, his speak, his dignity and the loner in him that makes him absolutely irresistable, as well of course the way he swivels his guns in his hands before shooting - what a man

Well, as a heterosexual male myself, Big John never did attract me sexually but his masculinity and character were most attractive. He was probably the most charismatic person I've ever known, bar none.

Not only was he a ladies man but a man's man as well.

John Wayne could have just fallen in the hog pen, tripped into a vat of lard, got pushed into the chicken coop and then slept in the horse stable and he would still be one of the most unforgettable ruggedly handsome male specimens that "ever" graced the big screen. My, my, my! Whew - is it hot in here to you...
