The John Wayne Story
The Later Years 2001 (87 mins)

1280

A nice little DVD concentrating on John Wayne films between Big Jim Mc Lain to The Shootist is John Wayne Later Years.

It is around 87 minutes in length and is Region Free available from Play.com and on Ebay. There is also an Early Years DVD which deals with films up to late 1940s/1950s

Most of the DVD is clips and trailers from most of those movies. Quality varies between clips but the selling point of this DVD to me is the other rare footage of Duke that is also included.

The unusual stuff is as follows:-

Talking about Rio Bravo with Dean Martin on the Dean Martin Show

Gunsmoke Promo for TV Series and tribute by James Arness to John Wayne

Red Cross Promo from set of Trouble Along The Way

Christamas Seals Appeal from set of Blood Alley

Barbarian & The Geisha promo selling it vitrues!!!

TV ad with Patrick Wayne for Gillette razor

American Cancer Society appeal

Footage of his arrival at 1970 Oscars, talking with Bob Hope and his Acceptance Speech for True Grit

1970 Special with Raquel Welch at Mexican Orphanage

Footage of the making of Brannigan

Bank ad for Great Western Savings in 1977

For the price at around £5.00 it is well worth buying

Excellent Thread Keith Iwasnt aware of the Duke & The General.

Other documentaries are BBC Reputation Programme on life of John Wayne.
A detailed hour of interviews and clips.

Hollywood Greats again aired on BBC with Jonathan Ross 45 minute programme cover his career with recent footage of his children being interviewed.

It would be nice with 100th Anniversary approaching if special DVD was issued of On Board with Duke plus his frequent TV appearances.

Plimpton! Shootout at Rio Lobo. 1970 (50 mins)

Written by William Kronick and George Plimpton

1287

This rare documentary, made during the actual
Old Tucson Location shooting of Rio Lobo,
follows journalist George Plimpton, from his arrival
on set, to his first meeting with 'The Duke'
and his off-set training, so that he can effectively
deliver his one line, minus his Harvard accent!

The results are hilarious, and show the humorous
'mickey-taking' that Duke and his supporting cast
(Jack Elam, Victor French, David Huddlestone
and Jennifer O'Neil) were so skilled at

George finds out the best way to acquire
a Western drawl,and a western walk,
who better to learn from then Duke!!!

Hi Keith

Here is another interesting one John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and The Legend

This dvd is from the recently aired PBS American Masters documentary "John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and The Legend."

John Ford is considered by many America's greatest director - winner of six Academy Awards, more than any director before or since. John Wayne is the actor whom he transformed from a B-western cowboy into a larger-than-life national icon. Their friendship and professional collaboration spanned 50 years, changed each other's lives, changed the movies and, in the process, changed how America saw itself.

Their remarkable body of work - including Stagecoach, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, The Searchers, The Horse Soldiers, The Alamo and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - is heroic and nostalgic, reflecting all the elements and all the paradoxes in 20th-century America: generosity of spirit, abuse of power, a sense of loyalty and a new, restless nationalism.

Hi Keith

I got my John Wayne the Duke Lives On: A Tribute. It is about 48 minutes in length.

It states it is 1980 RKO release although the video has 1989 from Turner Entertainment on it.

Quite a good video. the first 12 minutes takes from being born to Stagecoach with a lot of clips from his early movies.

Then follow a section on the roles he played after Stagecoach in the 1940s.

The bulk of the video concentrates on his war movies of Flying Tigers Sand of Iwo Jima, Flying Leathernecks and in particular the Ford westerns Fort Apache, Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Quiet Man .

No mention sightings of any of the Hawks movies or The Searchers!!

After this there are clips from attending political rallies in 1950s Liberty Bell etc and a 1970's Republican rally with Gerald Ford and the Brass Balls award at Harvard in 1974.

There are some clips from the Barbara Walters interview before his death and the 1979 Oscars.

Biggest blooper is the narrator saying that he lost out on an Academy Award for the second time for his role in The Quiet Man.

He is shown winning his Oscar in 1970 for True Grit and leaving the show with his academy award.

Print is good for a video but the colour in the colour clips are a little faded.

So far, what we can see here, is that it seems that quite a few,
documentaries, have only been aired on TV and at best,

Now that most of Duke's available movies are now already out on DVD,
there seem a perfect marketing opportunity,
for the distributors to get hold of these docs,

I'm a serious collector of Wayne/Hawks/Ford documentaries.

I'm still desperately looking for the HATARI! Featurette.
It was shoot in Africa during the making and was distributed on 16mm and 35mm.
Title: BIG GAME HUNTING WITHOUT GUNS.
Also SPIRIT OF THE ALAMO
& DIRECTED BY JOHN FORD

Anybody?

I have a lot of stuff for trade.

Also I can't find DVD reviews here on the board. RIO BRAVO is out already? (2-Disc).
I wanted to know whether Warner was capable this time of digging out the fabulous Behind-the-scenes footage they have on my favorite Wayne-film. It is all in color, shows
Ricky & Dino behind the scenes And I guess Wayne talking to Ford (who visited). A buddy of mine saw it in the Warners vaults and when I was with Warner Home for a business meeting I asked them about it. They said, whenever we're doing a REAL release of that film, that might be the moment to use it...
Well, have they?

The Republic Pictures Story released in 1991 and available on NSTC video.

A very comprehensive and nearly 2 hours documentary on Republic Pictures.

Obviously, John Wayne features in this story with clips from his 33 movies he made at Republic.

The video is spilt into sections covering various areas of Republic's output.

There are portions on the numerous Serials such as westerns, super heroes and science
fiction.

Musical Cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers are interviewed with numerous clips from their movies.

War Movies which covers Republic WW2 war output and includes Flying Tigers Fighting Seabees and Sands of Iwo Jima

John Wayne This covers Duke's output with Republic from Westward Ho in 1936 to The Quiet Man in 1952. Approximately 15 minutes in length in mainly consists of clips from his movies at Republic with little discussion of his dealings with Herbert Yates.

Extras and Effects shows what the Studios special effects and miniatures produced for their movies.

Later Years shows the move away from small movies bigger artistic movies and into areas such as film noir, anti communist and romantic movies and the final westerns plus the demise of Republic with television.

The Future shows the rise of a production company called Republic Pictures in the 1990s which were producing new movies for Television and Cable.

All in all a detailed documentary. A little more information on the studio history and the illustrious Herbert Yates and more on John Wayne would have been nice.

For a UK production, about something,
so very American, this wasn't a bad doc at all!!

So far, what we can see here, is that it seems that quite a few,
documentaries, have only been aired on TV and at best,
have only been released on VHS.
Now that most of Duke's available movies are now already out on DVD,
there seem a perfect marketing opportunity,
for the distributors to get hold of these docs,
and get them digitally transferred!!

Hi Keith

Seems to me a perfect opportunity for one of your excellent sticky lists here!

How about it pardner?

Great list Elly!!

There is a Discovery programme on the Death of John Wayne which is a discussion about whether he caught cancer from filming The Conqueor in Utah.

Also, there is the infamous Barry Norman Hollywood Greats on John Wayne from 1980 but I cant imagine anyone wanting to watch liberal pinky Barry grudgingly give John Wayne some praise through buckets of sarcasm and a hacket job !!

Funny how the only Hollywood Greats ever to be remade was John Wayne.

Hello Mike and Keith

Thanks for the info.

I knew this was a very rough list partly because I have some stuff catalogued as TV others as documetaries and used to have some catalogued as biographies?

I am not sure what we should include in this list? What are your thoughts on this please?

Also what about longer documentaries like Martin Scorceses personal journey through American movies 300+ minutes but there is quite a big 35+ minutes section on westerns with JW? on the other hand there are some like the Hollywood series narrated by James Mason aprrox 450 minutes in total JW appears for approx 5 minutes.

Another political documentary DVD that involved John Wayne was No Substitute for Victory which was primarily about the war being fought in Vietnam at the time and delves into the links with previous conflicts from 1945 to 1970. John Wayne provides the narration links between interviewees such as General Clarke, Vietnam Veterans and journalists like Lowell Thomas.

At 73 minutes it is interesting to watch and most of the Wayne links are filmed in his den with his Oscar for True Grit on display. Documentary dates from 1970. Film is available on DVD in Region Free. Print and Sound are Very Good.

Hi Kevin

Yes, it was widely available under a number of different covers. Amazon or Ebay would be your best best. It was around $5.00 to $7.00 mark.

The Searchers Documentary
I ran across some info on a documentary made about the Searchers and was curious if anyone has seen it. It's called A Turning of the Earth:John Ford, John Wayne, and the Searchers. The review I read said... ,"featuring tons of outtakes and rare footage from "the searchers" intercut with interviews of many of the surviving cast and crew, "the turning of the earth" is an outstanding documentary about the making of one of the greatest films of all time. it's insightful, well-researched and well-made, one of the finest films on the making of a film. "the turning of the earth" is (as far as i know) only available with "the searchers" special edition laserdisc, but it's well worth seeking out for any john wayne/john ford fans. for fans of "the searchers" it's an absolute must."

It said only available with the laserdisc. Has anyone found it anywhere else? It really sounded like something that I would love to see. :D

Smokey,

I don't know how to tell you this, but if it hasn't been there already, I don't think laserdisc is EVER coming to Australia - it's been here since the 70's but only really lasted maybe 5 to 10 years. Any laserdiscs or players are only available at yard sales or maybe on E-bay (that international garage sale).

While they had a good quality picture, laserdiscs had the misfortune of having video tapes enter the market and everybody went that direction instead. As I recall, laserdiscs were very expensive, but hey, having full length movies in one's own home was an entirely new concept.

It does sound like a fascinating piece of work, however, and somebody out there somewhere probably has a copy of it.

Yours ,

Chester

Is what you are talking about the four segments from the Warner Bros. Presents TV series hosted by Gig Young, providing an insiders's look at the Monument Valley Location filming and featuring co-stars Jeffrey Hunter and Natalie Wood?

Chisum,

You must have the same version of The Searchers that I have, with that special footage at the end of the tape. Reading the description above, I feel fairly certain that it is not the same as what AEC23 is referring to.

I have seen the "Turning of the Earth" and it is quite excellent...They discuss the making of the film, the importance of monument valley, the conditions there, the locals, and tons of amateur video of the Duke and John Ford. They show how they did stunts, they explained Wayne's tribute to Harry Carey Sr. at the end. They have interviews with several of the characters.

I obtained this documentary with my purchase of the VHS about 4 years ago. It was just bundled with the movie. And then after the Turning of the Earth, there was a documentary by Patrick Wayne about his reflections of The Searchers...and how when he came in to Jorgenson's house to announce the rescue of Mos Harper and the whereabouts of scar, that all the interruptions his Dad and Ward Bond threw at him while attempting to recite his lines...were all ad lib..unscipted. "Turn around...yeah..your a Yankee calvalryman"--JW and "Who's colonel Greenhill"--Ward Bond All that was not in the script.

These two documentaries are a must see.

General,

When you say "bundled with the movie" do you mean it is on the same tape, or a separate tape in a package? My copy of The Searchers has the extra stuff with Gig Young to which Chisum made reference, after the movie, on the same tape.

"The Turning of the Earth" sounds fascinating, and something every John Wayne fan would love to have - I know I would!

Yeah..I just walked into Best Buy in 1999, found The Searchers ... the last one on the shelf in its clamshell case ... turned it over, saw that on the tape the Turning of the Earth was included, and I headed straight to the checkout with it.

If you go to amazon.com and buy used, you could check with the seller first to see if that edition includes it. It's weird, because that same appearing release apparently sometimes has the Turning of Earth, sometimes it doesn't. The special wide-screen edition also appeared in the same clamshell case.

I hope you find it...you will not be disappointed. The narrator John Melious does a wonderful job.

OK, I couldn't stand it anymore, and I went to Ebay and did a search for The Searchers (Special Edition), and they had it!! Buy It Now for 8.95, plus shipping.

But it's the right one, with The Turning of the Earth. It's available (on VHS only, as near as I can tell), so check it out, you guys!

Yee haw!

Oh no! I went from VHS to Laserdisc...
from Laserdisc to DVD...
and now I have to go back buy me a VHS!
They certainly know how to ripp off them fans.
One thing is for sure though: As soon as I've bought it on VHS -
it will be out in a Special DVD collector's box! Ouch!

You know, itdo, that is the truth!

I was kind of bummed to buy another VHS when I already have one. However, each one has a different "special feature" and The Turning of the Earth sounded too good to pass up, so I bit the bullet and did it.

And, sure as shootin', later this year out will come the DVD with both special features, plus more! Murphy's law . . .

Well, I just got my copy of the documentary, and it is really good. There are a lot of home movie shots with the Duke and Ford. Patrick Wayne gives both sides of the story on the discovery of Monument Valley. It was worth buying.

Just to update this thread . . . after so many years . . . .

By now, almost anyone who has been on this board for almost any length of time knows that The Searchers was released in a special "Ultimate Collector's Edition" DVD set in 2006 and did indeed include the documentary "The Turning of the Earth" along with other bonus materials.

If you own it and haven't taken the time to watch it, I encourage you to make the time. You won't be sorry!

If you'd like to learn more about Duke-related documentaries, check out Keith's comprehensive list, and the related discussion thread.
