View Full Version : Kevin Costner KILLED Liberty Valance

Some of you will probably be thinking that I've posted this in the wrong area and those with itchy mouse fingers will be contemplating a move to the Off Topic forum for this thread, but I think its more appropriate here. Its important to watch the two clips in the sequence they are posted.

I don't know if any of you are fans of Harry Potter, I love books but I am not keen on the movies, however here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=iMKGqSsPR88)is a clip from some of the Harry Potter movies with the song 'Liberty Valance' being played, this song was cut from the 1962 movie and in my opinion rightly so.

Now most of you are probably wondering what on earth has this got to do with Kevin Costner, well heres (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YA2aG4JXhyw)the answer, I'm very sorry to do this to Todd and fellow fans.

I cannot be critical of his performance as I cannot sing worth a hoot myself. It does sound horrible, I will give you that.

But, I think that most of you Costner hater's should be happy he is singing a John Wayne movie song. That should count for something. Might make some people curious and go out and buy/rent a Duke film and expand the fan base.

Hi Todd

I know that Kevin Costner is a big fan of 'The Man who shot Liberty Valace' maybe that he why he chose to sing the song.

It's a shame really, because the song isn't too bad,
and Gene Pitney, not a bad singer!
It's just that the two, didn't go well together.
Costner apart(obviously, a fan of the song)
I would like to have heard recently departed
Frankie Laine, perform this!!
You can bet, it would have probably have made the movie.

Great post and connection Robbie,
and I thought you'd all be interested in the bigger story.

(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance by Gene Pitney

Date: 1962
U.S. Chart: 4

This song was written by the prolific songwriting team
of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
When they wrote this, they were not full-time partners yet
but were considering doing so.
Many people think that this is the theme song for the
1962 movie of the same name.
Although it was written for the movie and everybody loved it,
John Ford (the movie's director) hated it and kept it off the soundtrack.
Gene Pitney himself later said: "The song 'Liberty Valance'
was written for the movie but for some strange reason
never was put in the soundtrack.
Because of the prior success with 'Town Without Pity,
' I was paid a bundle to record the song,
and Burt Bacharach produced it. He wrote the song with Hal David.
There was some screw-up between the publishing company
, Famous Music, and the parent company, Paramount Pictures.
As to why it never was in the actual film,
the most bizarre part of the story I found out a few years ago.
The actual music used in the film was from a
1938 Henry Fonda film called Young Mr. Lincoln. Go figure that out!"
(thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)

Now, Now Kevin, you need to give Costner a break. I bet your favorite Costner movie is The Big Chill. If you recall, he was dead and they the final cut of the movie shows no Kevin Costner at all. Must be your favorite movie.

Cheers

Hi

A great thread Robbie and brilliantly cut! In the trailer of TMWSLV the record is plugged. The song itself is one of my all time favourite Duke songs. Kieth I agree with you about Frankie Laine especially when you listen to songs such as Gunfight at the OK Corral.

With regard to Fords music he used recurring themes especially favourites like the Anne Rutlidge theme from Young Mr Lincoln and the railroad theme in The Iron Horse, If you listen to the sound track of How the West was Won you'll hear many of these themes.

I love Harry Potter and the clip with MWSLV song is great! Kevin Costner singing, well, I give him credit for trying and hope I could have a closer look - he's still cute.
I have so far thought Costner's made one movie of a lifetime, Dances with wolves, but is generally not much of an actor. I changed my mind completely after seeing him in Clint Eastwood direction A Perfect world, man, he's perfect! Anybody who says, he cannot act, watch that movie first!

I like Kevin Costner but the
man can't sing, he should
stick to making movies.

I was shocked to discover that he has his own band in which he is the lead singer and on top of this he does many gigs with his band.

I am sure Simon Cowell would have a field day with Mr Costner if he did an audition for him as he was terrible, although like Todd I also can't sing. Another actor who can't sing but thinks otherwise is Eddie Murphy, apparently he did an audition for Simon Cowell who was very critical of Eddie’s performance and this in turn created some friction between the two.

Back to Kevin Costner I have to admit that while I'm not a fan I do enjoy many of his movies such as 'A Perfect World', 'Waterworld' (not everyone’s favourite), Open Range and 'The Bodyguard', however as far as singing goes he should cut his losses.

Robbie,

Interesting clips! While Mr. Costner leaves something to be desired, I think if I had been in the audience, I probably would have enjoyed the show (the violin player was pretty good). I'm not a Costner fan by any means, but the fact that he was there shows that he relates to the fans, as some of the other YouTube videos indicated (especially when he ran the bases with all the kids, upon his arrival at the site . . .yeah, we watched some other clips from that same list).

Though we've never read the books or seen any of the movies, the Harry Potter clip to Liberty Valance was pretty good, though the Mrs. says she would have liked to have seen the final victory (if there was one . . . ).

Strange thing with Mr. Costner, he started out being very popular
and somehow, has completely lost his appeal!

Mind you, apart from one or two major errors of judgement
in his career,(Wyatt Earp was never going to better Tombstone!)
when interviewed, why does he always come across as some righteous,
self-opinionated, pompous ass!!

Hi Keith

Yes you think he believes every word that comes out of his mouth is holy writ.

Just for a change from Costner bashing how about Nicholas Cage.

He has zero talent or ability. He only got to where he is by being the niece (sorry I meant nephew but what the hell leave it in) of Francis Ford Coppola and together with Costner has the ability to turn me off ANY movie that he has been cast in.

There seems to be a lot of antipathy toward Kevin Costner on this forum, which I don't share. He's by no means my favorite actor but I think there are many who are far worse.

And IMO, he made two of the best Westerns that have ever been made - "Dances With Wolves" and "Open Range".

I also liked "Tin Cup".

Of the newer generation of actors, I'd probably pick Brad Pitt as my favorite.

Man you guys are brutal.

Have you ever watched any of his baseball movies? Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, For Love Of the Game....These are very good movies. How about The Untouchables with Sean Connery? Silverado, No Way Out, Tin Cup(while not a classic, fun movie). Plus yes, he has made a few bad movies, but so does everyone, and I mean everyone.

I know I have a uphill battle with most of you guys but gees. Its like Kevin is the Jeff Gordon of Hollywierd or something..........

There are even a couple of Cage movies I like - "Raising Arizona" and "Con Air".

I think the only actors in Hollywood whose movies I consciously and deliberately avoid are Jane Fonda, Barbara Streisand and Sean Penn. Mostly because I loathe their politics.

DukePilgrim
February 16th, 2007, 11:52 AM
Hi Jim

That should be easy. The only thing Fonda does is some face cream to make her not a day over 80. Streisand just screeches in Las Vegas some place. Poor James Brolin married to that.

Sean Penn I am tempted to use Keith's line of Who?

He was married to Madonna but I would be pushed to name one of his films.

The 'Libery Valance' song is rather good, but I do feel it was right not to include it in the film as it would detract from the general tone of the movie. Therefore the grim and pointed music used in the movie was the right choice in my opinion.

Well at least Kevin Costner sings better than me. After reading all the comments here first I actually expected it to sound even worse. I don't really like this music anyway, but some of the music I do listen to have either poor singers or musicians. Anyway, I like some of Kevin Costners movies too.

As for Barbara Streisand I remember reading about her in a newspaper a long time ago (I haven't tried to verify this story) that she was considering having a nose job(no, I didn't fall for the joke). When she contacted a plastic surgeon he refused to do it because he was afraid it would change her voice.

Hello dolly with Walter Matthau, Funny Girl with Omar Sharif are two B Streisand movies I liked. I think both she and Jane Fonda are attractive. Don't know Barbs politics and don't much care for Ms Fonda's. Kevin Costner's version of Lib Valance was not the best imo.
