I was wondering about the historical or other reasons that Torquay is refered to as "The Tombstone of England"... Can you enlighten us ?

I'm not sure how far Torquay is from Pompey, but in the middle of January my wife spent two days there attending a trade fair she left home at 1000 Sunday morning took a bus to Fareham as there were no trains running out of Portsmouth. A train to Bath changed and went one stop on to Bristol, changed for a train from Exeter to Newton Abbot and then on to Torquay. She got into her guest house at 7.30 that night. I have never been to Torquay, but as we are planning to spend a holiday in the west country in the summer, previous to her going we thought that it might be a good idea to make that our base.

I think she has changed her mind about that since going.

Problem being Arthur,
there seems to be direct trains now and then up north
or to London, but 9 times out of 10
it's change at Newton Abbott!!

It's something the Government of Torquay,
put in to operation, in an attempt
to make getting here difficult
and to dissuade, marauding pompey supporters!!

However it is a good base, and by car, not such a problem.
Let me know, if you do, I maybe able to help and
hopefully point you in the right direction, so to speak!
