Music has a way of touching our emotions when we watch a moive. Some great composers have really made that special touch in Duke's movies. Victor Young has composed (8) eight movies, Roy Webb has (7) seven. Max Steiner did (3) three, Emil Newman did (3) three, Dimitri Tiomkin composed (6) six, just to name a few.

I have a collection of music from Elmer Bernstien (composed 8) that has quite a selection from movies Duke starred in. I really liked the music from The Commancheros. The Sons from Katie Elder is also a good one. Maybe there is one that stands out to you.

;)

I have to say that Hondo from Emil Newman gives me the chills, everytime I hear that theme music.

:P

What is your favorite theme music? You might have to pull out those videos to watch and listen before responding.

I would have to pick the Quiet Man. I listened to that soundtrack often and love it. I think that Victor Young did a superb job on this one.

I like the music in True Grit, The Searchers, The Quiet Man and The Sons of Katie Elder.

I think the scences at the beginning and end of the Searchers where there is no dialogue just music and the song of the Searchers playing is excellent.

The music at the start of the Sons Of Katie Elder is brilliant because its Dukes comeback movie and the music alerts you to the fact that your going to see something specail.

In the Comancheroes when Duke is out in the wide open country rideing and the music is playing it is just so traditional and exactly what you want to see .....and hear. ;)

Music in "The Quiet Man" is used extensively and always to great effect you only have to watch the movie to understand.

One negative factor regarding music is that there are far too many songs in films like Rio Grande and it dilutes the story a little, although I am sure I am going to get some heavy critism for that statement.

robbie,

well for once i have to agree with you about the music in some of the movies is to much and takes away from the movie but we should thank our lucky stars jw didn't make a movie like seven brides for seven brothers with all that music. yuk
i have found also that some times the music becomes so loud that you can't hear the dialog from the actors has that happened to anyone elses movies?

Hi again,
It's funny being a John Wayne fan. The reason I'm saying this is because my favorite John Wayne movie of all time is Chisum. So when asked my favorite Theme it is easy, The one from Chisum. :D
But right now I'm watching Hatari! on TV as I'm typing this. The Henri Mancini songs carry the movie so well.
Like watching The Quiet Man and the way the theme goes through the whole movie. :P
So I guess the proper reply to my favorite John Wayne movie or music theme would be "The one I'm watching now" because it changes from movie to movie ;)

Mrs. Chester here, enjoying the "lazy" days of summer! Not so lazy, really, but when you home school your kids, summer is when you can call mornings your own. Come September, we will be knee deep in lessons by this time of day.

But for now . . .

I really like the music from The Sons of Katie Elder, and find the song near the end of The Alamo simply haunting. Music from The Searchers is very moving as well. It is interesting to me, the different emotions the music can evoke.

Elmere Bernstien did so many great compositions for so many movies. I really am moved to the movie To Kill A Monkingbird. When I hear Bernstein's music in Duke's movies, I listen with great enjoyment. The Comancheros, True Grit, The Sons of Katie Elder, just to name a few of his compositions.

I like Victor Young also. He did the music for The Quiet Man.

You new ones, tell us some of your favorite movie music.

Having recently had the privilege of being able to watch The High and the Mighty, I realized that a tune I have loved for years is from that movie. The theme music, which John whistles, is beautiful. Somebody posted, in another thread, that JW liked to whistle that tune when he flew, until there was some problem on a flight he was on; he didn't do it after that.

John Williams did a lot of great music before he became world known from the scores of Star Wars. I didn't know how much he did for so many movies.

Are there other musical introductions in any Duke movie you liked?

I don't really know which movie has my favorite music. I do love the love theme from The Quiet Man, of course - the "Isle of Inisfree." Very, very pretty.

I also really like the theme from The High and the Mighty. I've never seen the film, but it's one my dad's told me about before. He hasn't seen it since he was a kid and he wishes they would show it again on TV or release it for home video. I understand that it's tied up in legal battles and the like but maybe someday.

Anyway, does Duke actually do the whistling? That's some mighty pretty whistling!

Hondo Duke Lane
September 1st, 2003, 12:35 AM
Jen,

Duke could not whistle, so someone did the whistling for Duke in The High & The Mighty. When you get to see the movie, you will see a silhouette of Duke almost everytime he whistles that tune.

Hope that answers your questions.

Mrs. Chester wants to know . . .

Who does whistle for JW in that movie? Whoever it is does a great job! Reminiscent of my father whistling when I was a kid.

I know that Marni Nixon does the singing for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, for Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember and The King and I, and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. She was UNcredited in all those movies. I realize those singing roles were much larger than the whistling part in The High and the Mighty, but it would be an interesting piece of trivia to know.

( . . . some time passes . . . )

OK, I checked IMDb, and will now answer my own question -

Muzzy Marcellino dubbed the whistling for John Wayne!

So now we ALL know!

Well, thanks everyone. I've heard Duke singing enough in movies to get the impression that carrying a tune wasn't one of his strengths. ;) And the whistling in that song was at least as good as anything I've ever heard even Bing Crosby do, so...

Max Steiner composed the music for The Searchers. What a great musical score for that movie. I watched it the other day, and really enjoyed it very much. It was very appropriate, and made the mood for the movie great. I found out he composed the music for Operation Pacific and Trouble Along The Way, which I enjoyed as well. Any others that touched you in Duke movies?

In addition there are these CDs:

Bear Family Records also produced FROM ALAMO TO EL DORADO
includes many originally recorded songs, even including the Spanish version of Glen Gampell singing True Grit

The most recent release would probably be THE GREEN BERETS, by Silver Age Classics, very good recording, includes the original recording of the title song

THE COMANCHEROS, limited edition of 3000, with the full soundtrack, by SILVER SAGE CLASSICS

HOW THE WEST WAS WON, the full recording including the songs, CBS

The new recording of THE ALAMO, by Columbia, the first full recording, uses the film soundtrack for "lost" pieces, so there is also dialogue on it. Includes many previously unreleased tracks from the Director's Cut.

THE WESTERN FILM WORLD OF DIMITRI TIOMKIN, selected recordings from High Noon, Giant, Red River, Duel in the Sun, Night Passage, and Rio Bravo (the main theme - without singing, and the Love-theme which aren't recorded anywhere else, I guess), by Unicorn-Kanchana

THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, complete recording, rare, this was not for public sale, promotional copy by GEMA, but sometimes, in a store with good selection

AND ON THE LP (you just can't kill those things)

CIRCUS WORLD, has rare artwork on cover, without Wayne

for THE ALAMO, there were 3 LPs. Next to the usual one with Tiomkin's recording, there was "REMEMBER THE ALAMO", by Terry Gilkyson and the Easy Riders - has a couple of tracks which aren't on the Tiomkin-recording. THE ALAMO, by Tex Beneke. These two are valuable. Then there are the singles sung by Avalon.

STAGECOACH, two record Set, has the full soundtrack with dialogue.

The original soundtrack of TRUE GRIT, with Glen Campbell's vocals, is, interesting enough, conducted by Bernstein, but it sounds like a modernized version of his own composing, Sixties-Style.

RIO GRANDE, the full soundtrack

FROM ITALY:
MUSICHE DA CELEBRI FILM DI JOHN WAYNE, very nice recording with great cover

FROM GERMANY
ERINNERUNGEN AN JOHN WAYNE

101 STRINGS PRESENTS A TRIBUTE TO JOHN WAYNE
concentrates on the folk songs, like Red River Valley, Streets of Laredo and so on

ISLAND IN THE SKY - the original soundtrack would be very valuable. The was a re-release with Island on A-side and The Song of Bernadette on the other. The thing that makes this recording a must for Wayne-fans: He tells the whole film over the music.

THE UNDEFEATED (on B-side is How the West Was Won)

EL DORADO the full recording, arranged by Nelson Riddle, valuable

THE HORSE SOLDIERS, rare. The companion-piece-LP CONSTANCE TOWERS SINGS TO THE HORSE SOLDIERS is even harder to get.

SANDS OF IWO JIMA, together with John Ford's THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT

JOHN WAYNE STARRING IN STAGECOACH is the recording of Wayne appearing on the radio version. The B-Side has Randolph Scott in his radio version of Stagecoach (also with Claire Trevor!). Interesting to compare.

THE LONGEST DAY, selected soundbites of music and dialogue (Japan Import)
I've never seen an original soundtrack of that film, just a single, with Mitch Millers conducting of the March and Song of the film's end
CAST A GIANT SHADOW, the full recording, conducted by Bernstein

THE MUSIC OF REPUBLIC has Wayne on cover and selected soundtracks of B-westerns on it, like The Three Mesquiteers Suite

THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, full recording

Now that they put AMERICA WHY I LOVE HER on CD, prices have come down for the LP. Mint condition always sold for over 100$. These were so hard to get!

Hope they release a full recording of Rio Bravo pretty soon!

That's a good question. I've wondered if the value of the older LPs has gone down with the availability and much better quality of CDs. Nowadays, if you can even find a turntable, or someone to repair one, you're fortunate.

About that 4 disc set of "ALAMO: DIMITRI TIOMKIN: The Essential Film Music Collection" we talked about earlier:

The one thing you cannot find on any other disc or LP, to my knowledge, is the first-time recording of the most stirring numbers of THE WAR WAGON.

While these 4 CDs are really packed with the best Tiomkin has to offer in any genre, The War Wagon is really the only track that's entirely new. Naming the set THE ALAMO isn't quite right because it offers no track that you haven't heard previously on Alamo LPs.

Yet if you're not familiar with Tiomkin and don't have most of his music already, this is a compilation you should get.

Listen to samples here:

As far as title music is concerned, I always have El Dorado playing in my head for a couple of days after watching the film. I also enjoy title music for Rio Lobo.

Over all music, The Alamo is probably my favorite. The Quiet Man is very good as well, hard not to be with all of the Irish music. ;)

Just last night, we watched The Magnificent Seven, and thought the music sounded "familiar" for some reason. The more we listened, we realized it sounded like music from The Sons of Katie Elder, and also we recognized the theme from the old Marlboro cigarette commercials (you know, the song for the Marlboro man), which I believe was later used in the Great Western commercials.

Anyway, in checking on IMDb, we learned that Elmer Bernstein was credited with the original composition of music for that film - and as mentioned above, he did the music for The Sons of Katie Elder and also Big Jake.

I didn't spend a long time checking out the music of Elmer Bernstein, but I suspect he has done many other movies and music which I would recognize.

Hi Chester

Elmer Bernstein also composed

The Shootist,

McQ,

Cahill,

True Grit

The Commancheros
which I particularly like for its stirring start, nostalgic and even poignant middle section climbing to a rousing climax. I think at times the music seems to be fortelling the end of John Waynes career which I suppose is silly as the film was made in the 1960s, or perhaps it puts you in that mood, but I find it a very thought provoking and meloncholy piece.

Cast A Giant Shadow another stirring sound track

Non John Wayne pictures include

The Great Escape

The Scalphunters

The Hallelujah Trail

Gunsmoke

And for me also also a fantastic piece of music

The Ten Commandments

I sometimes wonder especially in view of the last piece if he wrote the music and they put the film to it rather than the other way around, because the two go together perfectly.

:cowboy: The JW movie themes that I liked the most and always got my complete attention are:

"The Green Leaves Of Summer" from: The Alamo. It sure is one VERY pretty piece of music.

Next i'd have to say that the theme to The Searchers is my next favorite.

Then the Guitar piece from Rio Lobo.

After this is definately Barry Sadler's The Green Berets in The Green Berets.

Following this the theme music from Fort Apache.

Then the piece from: The Longest Day.

After these i'd have to be a bit more patriotic with the Marine Hymn from Sands of Iwo Jima.

My gosh!! I just went over to imdb.com to check out John Williams and found he has been cranking out movie music since the middle 50s. Some of his film scores from the 60s include "The Rare Breed" with Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Hara (our favorite feminine co-star for JW), "How To Steal A Million" with Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn and "Penelope" with Natalie Wood. So he already had years of film scoring experience when he did "The Cowboys" and, of course later, the "Star Wars" sagas and beyond.

I'm a film music nut, so I have plenty of Duke movie favorites when it comes to the music scores:

El Dorado- I like the 1960s-sound of the plucked bass guitar while Duke, Mitchum and Cann are patrolling the streets at night. Sounds very "Batman."

The Comancheros- Great main theme which sounds like "Sons of Katie Elder", which sounds like "The Magnificent Seven", which sounds like...

The Shootist- More Bernstein. Sounds poignant and sad, just like Bernstein's "To Kill a Mockingbird"...Love it.

The War Wagon- Probably the catchiest theme song of any Duke movie. Tiomkin was a master melodist.

The Alamo- I still don't like the film, but love the score. Tiomkin strikes again!

The Searchers- Max Steiner. The guy who invented modern film scoring, or at least was one of it's first giants.

Luckily most of the music in Dukes films has been great.
THE SEARCHERS, RED RIVER, THE COMMANCHEROS, THE QUIET MAN RIO LOBO.

When you look at the illustrious writers that were employed, it's no wonder!
Most of them, remain, the greatest movie music writers, of all time.

Hi

Breaking one of the rules over the use of the definitive works link but......

I have just watched Fort Apache on BBC 2 and as I can't remember where the original Fort Apache thread was I cottoned on to this one. It struck me that the music is quite good and quite varied and includes Around her neck she wore a yelllow ribbon. There is obviously a CD on Rio Grande. I wonder if the sound track of Fort Apache is in being. Does anyone know?

Howdy All,
I was just curious as to which composer of John Wayne film scores do you like the most. I would have to say that my favorites are Elmer Bernstein and Max Steiner. My favorite Bernstein scores are Cahill, and the Comancheros. And my favorite Steiner score is The Searchers. Just thought I'd throw this out.

THE SHOOTIST

and Dimitri Tiomkin for,

I would have to say that without a doubt the theme to the High and the Mighty is the one. Talk about a song that easily recognizable even today many years after the original. The High and the Mighty and John Wayne are synonymous.

SXViper
August 22nd, 2005, 12:19 AM
I would have to say Dimitri Tiomkin really fits the bill for a Wayne film. Not that the others that made music were not spectacular, but like Chisum said, you can recognize THATM even after all this time and that goes the same for the many other films he did the music for.

Wow..tough question. I have three favorites, and am not sure I could choose the best one.

Dimitri Tiomkin, Elmer Bernstein, and Victor Young.

Jay J. Foraker

Hi All -
My choice would be, first and foremost, Dimitri Tiomkin. "The High and the Mighty" with its memorable theme, "The War Wagon" with its title ballad sung by Ed Ames (he of tomahawk notoriety on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show") and "The Alamo" for exciting music to heighten action and a several ballads to boot, which, if not on the first rung of memorability, still are tuneful.
Elmer Bernstein would be my second choice. He did a number of Duke's films, all very noteworthy.
As I mentioned in another post a few weeks ago, I wish Jerry Goldsmith had the opportunity to do more JW movies than "In Harm's Way" and "Rio Lobo." He was the consummate craftsman and innovator with music.
Cheers - Jay :D

Hi,
Whilst on the subject of composers, perhaps it's worth mentioning,
two or three lesser known ones, for example:-

Richard Hageman, for
STAGECOACH
THE LONG VOYAGE HOME
ANGEL AND THE BADMAN
FORT APACHE
3 GODFATHERS
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON

Emil Newman for,
BIG JIM McLAIN
ISLAND IN THE SKY
HONDO

and I previously mentioned Victor Young, for THE QUIET MAN
but he was also responsible for,
THE DARK COMMAND
THREE FACES WEST
REAP THE WILD WIND
FLYING TIGERS
SANDS OF IWO JIMA
RIO GRANDE
THE CONQUEROR

Oh and by the way, he wrote a little song, young and old might know,

WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

That new True Grit soundtrack looks pretty good. I was never real happy with the jazzed up version that was released.

At any rate, I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of a Rio Bravo soundtrack or a Chisum soundtrack. It seems to me that there is plenty of real good music in both films, and I think they would make great soundtracks. Especially if they (whoever "they" may be) were to include the opening of Chisum with the William Conrad narration, and on the Rio Bravo soundtrack they could include Dean Martin's rendition of the title song.

I've never heard of either of these films having a soundtrack CD or album made. How about any of you folks?

Hi Bob

[ATTACH]638]

I have never seen either an exclusive Rio Bravo or Chisum Disc, but if you go into John Wayne's music there is a CD in existence called My Rifle My Pony and Me issued by Bear records and includes Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson singing My Rifle My Pony and Me and Dean Martin singing Rio Bravo.

[ATTACH]639]

There is also by the same record company Rio Bravo which also includes My Rifle my Pony and Me by Dean Martin it also has four tracks by Frankie Avalon from the Alamo which are not very good and the Ballad of the War Wagon.

I have the sound track from Chisum which unfortunately doesn't icnlude the William Conrad vocal.

Like you I think it a pretty good piece of music.

I have also a three disc set entitled Wild Wild West which isn't bad and contains How the West Was Won The Comanceros Ballad of the Alamo and Green Leaves of summer and Rio Bravo (Main theme) & True Grit. The main details of this

I just wanted you all to know that you are my last chance. I am still looking for a few more soundtracks to round out my collection. I have tried everywhere I can think of, except ebay. I tend to shy away from ebay for soundtracks because the ones I have gotten are rarely in decent shape due to scratches and such. So I am turning to the one group of folks that can help me. I would like to buy, trade, or do just about anything, to get either original soundtracks or dubbed copies of the following:
Big Jake
The Searchers
The High and the Mighty
The Sands of Iwo Jima
Barbarian and the Geisha
In Harm's Way

Can anyone please help me?!

I'm looking forward to hearing from you all. Either a posting here or a PM (which would probably be faster). Thanks everyone, I'm counting on you.

Hi William and Ethan aka Keith

Ethan is a nice name if I had son I would consider Ethan more likely to be John mind you LOL

Yes, Bernstein Williams and Goldsmith were geniuses whose work is grossly under rated. The late Bernard Hermann who worked on so many Hitchcock movies was also in their class.

The sad thing is modern audiences at the cinema will not see their like again as orchestral arrangements cost studios money and they would rather penny pinch with electronic music or forgettable pop songs.

If somebody asked you to name a film soundtack in the last 20 years you would be hard pushed. The recent Mummy movies are the only ones that come to mind with me and they were composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

At least we have the CDs. It would be great if Chisum was released as an OST CD.

Howdy All,
So far, I think I have just about all of the John Wayne soundtracks (thank you again Arthur, I am eternally indebted to you). The ones I am missing and cannot seem to find (but I'm still looking) are:
Big Jake
Chisum
The High and the Mighty
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Barbarian and the Geisha
In Harm's Way
True Grit (the new one, not the old one)

I do have some of the music from some of these films on compilation CD's, and although they're good and enjoyable to listen to, I try to find "complete" soundtracks that feature just the music from the particular film. I've purchased some from Varese Saraband, and Buysoundtrax.com, but as yet have not found any of these on ebay. But, that's half the fun of collecting John Wayne memorabilia, THE SEARCH!

Hi Jim and Mike

The one illustrated is the same as the one have. its interesting reading the various comments particularly about the singing. All in all though I think this is a very good CD.
On a par with the Searchers How The West Was Won and Red River I would go for How The West Was Won Red River and The Searchers.

If I were to expand two very good CD's that would stand with the other three are The films of Elmer Bernstein Volume 1 The Comancheros and True Grit, and Volume 2 The Shootist, Big Jake, Cahill United States Marshall.

Having played Stagecoach and Fort Apache I wasn't particularly impressed with Stagecoach reasonably happy with Fort Apache. Perhaps I expected more.

Hi Arthur

Those soundtracks were the first two I bought as LPs I think from DL Cutts and being the first soundtrack records I had I thought they were great

Funny thing when I bought them as CDs I expected to get beter reproduction but thought they sound a little dull particularly on Shootist and Cahill so much so that I now prefer other options

True Grit, Commancheros and Big Jake I have as complete OST and I prefer the Shootist and Cahill selections on new True Grit CD.

It proberably because they are new selections and are digital and I dont pump the volume like I have to on the Elmer Bernstein CDs.

I didn't know how merging the thread about John Wayne's Music into this thread would affect the flow of conversation, so thought it better to just share the link to another interesting discussion about the music from JW's films. Plenty of food for thought and "grist for the mill."

Thanks for the other link, Jim,
I've merged them anyway, they seem to flow OK.
Anyway at least now, we have them under the same roof.

Thanks, Keith! Just didn't want to muck things up with a bad merge! Glad it worked OK.
