Music has a way of touching our emotions when we watch a moive. Some great composers have really made that special touch in Duke's movies. Victor Young has composed (8) eight movies, Roy Webb has (7) seven. Max Steiner did (3) three, Emil Newman did (3) three, Dimitri Tiomkin composed (6) six, just to name a few.

I have a collection of music from Elmer Bernstien (composed 8) that has quite a selection from movies Duke starred in. I really liked the music from The Commancheros. The Sons from Katie Elder is also a good one. Maybe there is one that stands out to you.

;)

I have to say that Hondo from Emil Newman gives me the chills, everytime I hear that theme music.

:P

What is your favorite theme music? You might have to pull out those videos to watch and listen before responding.

I would have to pick the Quiet Man. I listened to that soundtrack often and love it. I think that Victor Young did a superb job on this one.

My favorite is " The Searchers ", but a very close runnerup is from " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance ". With some others being "Rio Bravo", "Red River".

I like the music in True Grit, The Searchers, The Quiet Man and The Sons of Katie Elder.

I think the scences at the beginning and end of the Searchers where there is no dialogue just music and the song of the Searchers playing is excellent.

The music at the start of the Sons Of Katie Elder is brilliant because its Dukes comeback movie and the music alerts you to the fact that your going to see something specail.

In the Comancheroes when Duke is out in the wide open country rideing and the music is playing it is just so traditional and exactly what you want to see .....and hear. ;)

Music in "The Quiet Man" is used extensively and always to great effect you only have to watch the movie to understand.

One negative factor regarding music is that there are far too many songs in films like Rio Grande and it dilutes the story a little, although I am sure I am going to get some heavy critism for that statement.

robbie,

well for once i have to agree with you about the music in some of the movies is to much and takes away from the movie but we should thank our lucky stars jw didn't make a movie like seven brides for seven brothers with all that music. yuk
i have found also that some times the music becomes so loud that you can't hear the dialog from the actors has that happened to anyone elses movies?

Hi again,
It's funny being a John Wayne fan. The reason I'm saying this is because my favorite John Wayne movie of all time is Chisum. So when asked my favorite Theme it is easy, The one from Chisum. :D
But right now I'm watching Hatari! on TV as I'm typing this. The Henri Mancini songs carry the movie so well.
Like watching The Quiet Man and the way the theme goes through the whole movie. :P
So I guess the proper reply to my favorite John Wayne movie or music theme would be "The one I'm watching now" because it changes from movie to movie ;)

Mrs. Chester here, enjoying the "lazy" days of summer! Not so lazy, really, but when you home school your kids, summer is when you can call mornings your own. Come September, we will be knee deep in lessons by this time of day.

But for now . . .

I really like the music from The Sons of Katie Elder, and find the song near the end of The Alamo simply haunting. Music from The Searchers is very moving as well. It is interesting to me, the different emotions the music can evoke.

Elmere Bernstien did so many great compositions for so many movies. I really am moved to the movie To Kill A Monkingbird. When I hear Bernstein's music in Duke's movies, I listen with great enjoyment. The Comancheros, True Grit, The Sons of Katie Elder, just to name a few of his compositions.

I like Victor Young also. He did the music for The Quiet Man.

You new ones, tell us some of your favorite movie music.

Having recently had the privilege of being able to watch The High and the Mighty, I realized that a tune I have loved for years is from that movie. The theme music, which John whistles, is beautiful. Somebody posted, in another thread, that JW liked to whistle that tune when he flew, until there was some problem on a flight he was on; he didn't do it after that.

Are there other musical introductions in any Duke movie you liked?

I don't really know which movie has my favorite music. I do love the love theme from The Quiet Man, of course - the "Isle of Inisfree." Very, very pretty.

I also really like the theme from The High and the Mighty. I've never seen the film, but it's one my dad's told me about before. He hasn't seen it since he was a kid and he wishes they would show it again on TV or release it for home video. I understand that it's tied up in legal battles and the like but maybe someday.

Anyway, does Duke actually do the whistling? That's some mighty pretty whistling!

Hondo Duke Lane
August 31st, 2003, 10:35 PM
Jen,

Duke could not whistle, so someone did the whistling for Duke in The High & The Mighty. When you get to see the movie, you will see a silhouette of Duke almost everytime he whistles that tune.

Hope that answers your questions.

Mrs. Chester wants to know . . .

Who does whistle for JW in that movie? Whoever it is does a great job! Reminiscent of my father whistling when I was a kid.

I know that Marni Nixon does the singing for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, for Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember and The King and I, and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. She was UNcredited in all those movies. I realize those singing roles were much larger than the whistling part in The High and the Mighty, but it would be an interesting piece of trivia to know.

( . . . some time passes . . . )

OK, I checked IMDb, and will now answer my own question -

Muzzy Marcellino dubbed the whistling for John Wayne!

So now we ALL know!

Well, thanks everyone. I've heard Duke singing enough in movies to get the impression that carrying a tune wasn't one of his strengths. ;) And the whistling in that song was at least as good as anything I've ever heard even Bing Crosby do, so...

Max Steiner composed the music for The Searchers. What a great musical score for that movie. I watched it the other day, and really enjoyed it very much. It was very appropriate, and made the mood for the movie great. I found out he composed the music for Operation Pacific and Trouble Along The Way, which I enjoyed as well. Any others that touched you in Duke movies?

In addition there are these CDs:

Bear Family Records also produced FROM ALAMO TO EL DORADO
includes many originally recorded songs, even including the Spanish version of Glen Gampell singing True Grit

The most recent release would probably be THE GREEN BERETS, by Silver Age Classics, very good recording, includes the original recording of the title song

THE COMANCHEROS, limited edition of 3000, with the full soundtrack, by SILVER SAGE CLASSICS

HOW THE WEST WAS WON, the full recording including the songs, CBS

The new recording of THE ALAMO, by Columbia, the first full recording, uses the film soundtrack for "lost" pieces, so there is also dialogue on it. Includes many previously unreleased tracks from the Director's Cut.

THE WESTERN FILM WORLD OF DIMITRI TIOMKIN, selected recordings from High Noon, Giant, Red River, Duel in the Sun, Night Passage, and Rio Bravo (the main theme - without singing, and the Love-theme which aren't recorded anywhere else, I guess), by Unicorn-Kanchana

THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, complete recording, rare, this was not for public sale, promotional copy by GEMA, but sometimes, in a store with good selection

AND ON THE LP (you just can't kill those things)

CIRCUS WORLD, has rare artwork on cover, without Wayne

for THE ALAMO, there were 3 LPs. Next to the usual one with Tiomkin's recording, there was "REMEMBER THE ALAMO", by Terry Gilkyson and the Easy Riders - has a couple of tracks which aren't on the Tiomkin-recording. THE ALAMO, by Tex Beneke. These two are valuable. Then there are the singles sung by Avalon.

STAGECOACH, two record Set, has the full soundtrack with dialogue.

The original soundtrack of TRUE GRIT, with Glen Campbell's vocals, is, interesting enough, conducted by Bernstein, but it sounds like a modernized version of his own composing, Sixties-Style.

RIO GRANDE, the full soundtrack

FROM ITALY:
MUSICHE DA CELEBRI FILM DI JOHN WAYNE, very nice recording with great cover

FROM GERMANY
ERINNERUNGEN AN JOHN WAYNE

101 STRINGS PRESENTS A TRIBUTE TO JOHN WAYNE
concentrates on the folk songs, like Red River Valley, Streets of Laredo and so on

ISLAND IN THE SKY - the original soundtrack would be very valuable. The was a re-release with Island on A-side and The Song of Bernadette on the other. The thing that makes this recording a must for Wayne-fans: He tells the whole film over the music.

THE UNDEFEATED (on B-side is How the West Was Won)

EL DORADO the full recording, arranged by Nelson Riddle, valuable

THE HORSE SOLDIERS, rare. The companion-piece-LP CONSTANCE TOWERS SINGS TO THE HORSE SOLDIERS is even harder to get.

SANDS OF IWO JIMA, together with John Ford's THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT

JOHN WAYNE STARRING IN STAGECOACH is the recording of Wayne appearing on the radio version. The B-Side has Randolph Scott in his radio version of Stagecoach (also with Claire Trevor!). Interesting to compare.

THE LONGEST DAY, selected soundbites of music and dialogue (Japan Import)
I've never seen an original soundtrack of that film, just a single, with Mitch Millers conducting of the March and Song of the film's end
CAST A GIANT SHADOW, the full recording, conducted by Bernstein

THE MUSIC OF REPUBLIC has Wayne on cover and selected soundtracks of B-westerns on it, like The Three Mesquiteers Suite

THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, full recording

Now that they put AMERICA WHY I LOVE HER on CD, prices have come down for the LP. Mint condition always sold for over 100$. These were so hard to get!

Hope they release a full recording of Rio Bravo pretty soon!

About that 4 disc set of "ALAMO: DIMITRI TIOMKIN: The Essential Film Music Collection" we talked about earlier:

The one thing you cannot find on any other disc or LP, to my knowledge, is the first-time recording of the most stirring numbers of THE WAR WAGON.

While these 4 CDs are really packed with the best Tiomkin has to offer in any genre, The War Wagon is really the only track that's entirely new. Naming the set THE ALAMO isn't quite right because it offers no track that you haven't heard previously on Alamo LPs.

Yet if you're not familiar with Tiomkin and don't have most of his music already, this is a compilation you should get.

Listen to samples here:

As far as title music is concerned, I always have El Dorado playing in my head for a couple of days after watching the film. I also enjoy title music for Rio Lobo.

Over all music, The Alamo is probably my favorite. The Quiet Man is very good as well, hard not to be with all of the Irish music. ;)

Just last night, we watched The Magnificent Seven, and thought the music sounded "familiar" for some reason. The more we listened, we realized it sounded like music from The Sons of Katie Elder, and also we recognized the theme from the old Marlboro cigarette commercials (you know, the song for the Marlboro man), which I believe was later used in the Great Western commercials.

Anyway, in checking on IMDb, we learned that Elmer Bernstein was credited with the original composition of music for that film - and as mentioned above, he did the music for The Sons of Katie Elder and also Big Jake.

I didn't spend a long time checking out the music of Elmer Bernstein, but I suspect he has done many other movies and music which I would recognize.

Hi Chester

Elmer Bernstein also composed

The Shootist,

McQ,

Cahill,

True Grit

The Commancheros
which I particularly like for its stirring start, nostalgic and even poignant middle section climbing to a rousing climax. I think at times the music seems to be fortelling the end of John Waynes career which I suppose is silly as the film was made in the 1960s, or perhaps it puts you in that mood, but I find it a very thought provoking and meloncholy piece.

Cast A Giant Shadow another stirring sound track

Non John Wayne pictures include

The Great Escape

The Scalphunters

The Hallelujah Trail

Gunsmoke

And for me also also a fantastic piece of music

The Ten Commandments

I sometimes wonder especially in view of the last piece if he wrote the music and they put the film to it rather than the other way around, because the two go together perfectly.

:cowboy: The JW movie themes that I liked the most and always got my complete attention are:

"The Green Leaves Of Summer" from: The Alamo. It sure is one VERY pretty piece of music.

Next i'd have to say that the theme to The Searchers is my next favorite.

Then the Guitar piece from Rio Lobo.

After this is definately Barry Sadler's The Green Berets in The Green Berets.

Following this the theme music from Fort Apache.

Then the piece from: The Longest Day.

After these i'd have to be a bit more patriotic with the Marine Hymn from Sands of Iwo Jima.

TRK.

If you compare the two different versions of Red River -
the originally intended Director's Cut which ran only outside the US -
and the so called "Book Version" for which Hawks had to settle because he had to cut his version -
you'll also find to slightly different soundtrack versions.
Of course, when Hawks had to cut his masterpiece due to legal actions taken by Howard Hughes, Tiomkin had to go back to the studio to conduct a new track as well. The differences are very subtle most of the time but very obvious in the final confrontation of Dunson/Matt where the most severe cuts had been made. Compare for instance the final shot of Dunson/Matt sitting on the ground.

I believe the one soundtrack released on CD is the Book Version. I haven't been able to find the different one. Anybody knows?

BTW, if you listen closely to the different Alamo-version you'll find that Dimitri had to work twice here again! Wherever Wayne had to make cuts, you'll hear that Tiomkin had to make those cuts work and alter the music accordingly. He was a very busy Russian, that Dimitri.

Hi Roland

I wrote to Big Trail some years ago when Tim did an appreaciation of Tiomkins movie music.

If you watch Rio Bravo his Settle Down or My Rifle My Pony and Me by Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin is Red River revisited, and if you follow closely the opening scene in which the only sound is the guitar playing, if you listen to the music you will find it is a melodic version of Marina Mine the theme music taken from the mid fifties picture Blowing Wild and normally sung by Frankie Laine.

I think you may be confusing Red River with another of Hawk's movies, when you say legal action by Howard Hughes was taken. I just finished reading 'Shooting Star', and there are a couple of pages dedicated to this very topic. According to the book, what happened was Hawks started out directing 'The Outlaw', but left after a short time to work on another project. This put Hughes in a bind, and he finished directing the movie himself. However, one of the Hawk's scene that remained in the film was where Doc Holiday was trying to get Billy The Kid to draw, and starts shooting the ground, and nicking off the lobs of his ears. 6 years later, Hawks shot almost an identical scene at the end of 'Red River'. Hughes took him to court, and Hawks was ready to remove the scenes (seeing as it truly was a case of copyright infringement). Duke stepped in, and respectfully asked Hughes to let the scene remain intact. Hughes was good friends with Wayne, and his response was "Sure Duke, I was just waiting for you to ask". Duke went on to make 3 films for Hughes after this episode.

And to be honest, the book did mention what film Hawks made that had to get altered (because of Hughes), but I can't remember the name.

Falc, compare the "Book"-version with the Director's cut, you'll see what I mean. It's just exactly the showdown and the "nicking of the ears" (in this case Clift's) that caused the law suit because it was so similar to The Outlaw, and you'll find the most severe cuts in this scene. Which is also, as I mentioned, a different soundtrack because of the cutting. Wayne helped Hawks in the cutting room.

But the book version was also some other scenes short, like a short talk between Clift and Beery, the riding down the hill towards the indians, and of course, every time you see the diary there's a different dissolve in the other version.

I am a little confused I have the version featuring the diary, is my version lacking in certain scenes.

Robbie,
there are two versions, the so-called book-version, the originally intended version by Hawks (which is today the version generally released) and a shorter version which Hawks cut himself as well, using Walter Brennan's voice over instead of the diary dissolves. The difference is seven and a half minutes. But I wouldn't call that just a short version. Because it's dramatically different, it's a version all for itself. As I pointed out - and that's why I started this topic - there were two soundtracks as well. Similar in general, but different nevertheless. My original question was if somebody knows where to get Tiomkin's second version.

Myself, I'd like to go with author Must who wrote "Howard Hawks Storyteller": "If you haven't seen the book-version, you haven't seen Red River". In that book, the analyzis of Red River runs some dozen pages, including how the two different versions came about (lenght problems with United Artists and the legal threat by Howard Hughes). Try to get that one, it's a great read.

Arthur,
about Tiomkin repeating himself: I know you once said you felt it was a sign of him beginning to get lazy. I don't know. Of course, these composer never knew that one day scholars would compare every single work. At that time, film music only seldom was sold on records at all. Anyway, in the case of Tiomkin, it rather strikes me like a handwriting which I recognize instantly, like a signature. It reminds me of the Chagall exhibition I had the chance to see in Vienna. That artist, it seemed to me, always painted the same picture in variations - always trying to get right the painting he always envisioned. The same is true for Dali - his melting watch isn't just in a single painting - he came back to it again and again. So if I'm listening to Tiomkin and recognize a tune from Blowing Wild in Rio Bravo (which is really a throw-away-moment, just a background piece for the Saloon) I don't think it's lazy, I think it's an artist revisting a former work and re-doing it.

All the great composers have a musical fingerprint, sometimes obvious, sometimes not so obvious. Of film music composers, Tiomkin was almost always recognizable, even if you did not know beforehand who had written the music. So too, Elmer Bernstein had a pretty obvious style. Jerry Goldsmith was more the chameleon, but once you knew he had written the music, it was identifiable to him. The best composers were able to rework material in many ways so that the variations were innumerable.

I just purchased this soundtrack, and can't wait to get it. I've heard sound bites from it, and it appears to be a first-rate reporduction. I'll let you know more, after I get it...

My gosh!! I just went over to imdb.com to check out John Williams and found he has been cranking out movie music since the middle 50s. Some of his film scores from the 60s include "The Rare Breed" with Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Hara (our favorite feminine co-star for JW), "How To Steal A Million" with Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn and "Penelope" with Natalie Wood. So he already had years of film scoring experience when he did "The Cowboys" and, of course later, the "Star Wars" sagas and beyond.

I'm a film music nut, so I have plenty of Duke movie favorites when it comes to the music scores:

El Dorado- I like the 1960s-sound of the plucked bass guitar while Duke, Mitchum and Cann are patrolling the streets at night. Sounds very "Batman."

The Comancheros- Great main theme which sounds like "Sons of Katie Elder", which sounds like "The Magnificent Seven", which sounds like...

The Shootist- More Bernstein. Sounds poignant and sad, just like Bernstein's "To Kill a Mockingbird"...Love it.

The War Wagon- Probably the catchiest theme song of any Duke movie. Tiomkin was a master melodist.

The Alamo- I still don't like the film, but love the score. Tiomkin strikes again!

The Searchers- Max Steiner. The guy who invented modern film scoring, or at least was one of it's first giants.

Luckily most of the music in Dukes films has been great.
THE SEARCHERS, RED RIVER, THE COMMANCHEROS, THE QUIET MAN RIO LOBO.
THE SHOOTIST.THE WAR WAGON etc
When you look at the illustrious writers that were employed, it's no wonder!
Most of them, remain, the greatest movie music writers, of all time.

Hi

Breaking one of the rules over the use of the definitive works link but......

I have just watched Fort Apache on BBC 2 and as I can't remember where the original Fort Apache thread was I cottoned on to this one. It struck me that the music is quite good and quite varied and includes Around her neck she wore a yelllow ribbon. There is obviously a CD on Rio Grande. I wonder if the sound track of Fort Apache is in being. Does anyone know?

Howdy All,
I was just curious as to which composer of John Wayne film scores do you like the most. I would have to say that my favorites are Elmer Bernstein and Max Steiner. My favorite Bernstein scores are Cahill, and the Comancheros. And my favorite Steiner score is The Searchers. Just thought I'd throw this out.

I would have to say that without a doubt the theme to the High and the Mighty is the one. Talk about a song that easily recognizable even today many years after the original. The High and the Mighty and John Wayne are synonymous.

I would have to say Dimitri Tiomkin really fits the bill for a Wayne film. Not that the others that made music were not spectacular, but like Chisum said, you can recognize THATM even after all this time and that goes the same for the many other films he did the music for.

Dimitri Tiomkin, Elmer Bernstein, and Victor Young.

Hi All -
My choice would be, first and foremost, Dimitri Tiomkin. "The High and the Mighty" with its memorable theme, "The War Wagon" with its title ballad sung by Ed Ames (he of tomahawk notoriety on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show") and "The Alamo" for exciting music to heighten action and a several ballads to boot, which, if not on the first rung of memorability, still are tuneful.
Elmer Bernstein would be my second choice. He did a number of Duke's films, all very noteworthy.
As I mentioned in another post a few weeks ago, I wish Jerry Goldsmith had the opportunity to do more JW movies than "In Harm's Way" and "Rio Lobo." He was the consummate craftsman and innovator with music.

Hi,
Whilst on the subject of composers, perhaps it's worth mentioning,
two or three lesser known ones, for example:-

Richard Hageman, for
STAGECOACH
THE LONG VOYAGE HOME
ANGEL AND THE BADMAN
FORT APACHE
3 GODFATHERS
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON

Emil Newman for,
BIG JIM McLAIN
ISLAND IN THE SKY
HONDO

and I previously mentioned Victor Young, for THE QUIET MAN
but he was also responsible for,
THE DARK COMMAND
THREE FACES WEST
REAP THE WILD WIND
FLYING TIGERS
SANDS OF IWO JIMA
RIO GRANDE
THE CONQUEROR

Oh and by the way, he wrote a little song, young and old might know,

That new True Grit soundtrack looks pretty good. I was never real happy with the jazzed up version that was released.

At any rate, I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of a Rio Bravo soundtrack or a Chisum soundtrack. It seems to me that there is plenty of real good music in both films, and I think they would make great soundtracks. Especially if they (whoever "they" may be) were to include the opening of Chisum with the William Conrad narration, and on the Rio Bravo soundtrack they could include Dean Martin's rendition of the title song.

I've never heard of either of these films having a soundtrack CD or album made. How about any of you folks?

Hi Bob

[ATTACH]638]

I have never seen either an exclusive Rio Bravo or Chisum Disc, but if you go into John Wayne's music there is a CD in existence called My Rifle My Pony and Me issued by Bear records and includes Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson singing My Rifle My Pony and Me and Dean Martin singing Rio Bravo.

[ATTACH]639]

There is also by the same record company Rio Bravo which also includes My Rifle my Pony and Me by Dean Martin it also has four tracks by Frankie Avalon from the Alamo which are not very good and the Ballad of the War Wagon.

I have the sound track from Chisum which unfortunately doesn't icnlude the William Conrad vocal.

Like you I think it a pretty good piece of music.

I have also a three disc set entitled Wild Wild West which isn't bad and contains How the West Was Won The Comanceros Ballad of the Alamo and Green Leaves of summer and Rio Bravo (Main theme) & True Grit. The main details of this

Hi William and Ethan aka Keith

Ethan is a nice name if I had son I would consider Ethan more likely to be John mind you LOL

Yes, Bernstein Williams and Goldsmith were geniuses whose work is grossly under rated. The late Bernard Hermann who worked on so many Hitchcock movies was also in their class.

The sad thing is modern audiences at the cinema will not see their like again as orchestral arrangements cost studios money and they would rather penny pinch with electronic music or forgettable pop songs.

If somebody asked you to name a film soundtack in the last 20 years you would be hard pushed. The recent Mummy movies are the only ones that come to mind with me and they were composed by Jerry Goldsmith.

At least we have the CDs. It would be great if Chisum was released as an OST CD.

Howdy All,
So far, I think I have just about all of the John Wayne soundtracks (thank you again Arthur, I am eternally indebted to you). The ones I am missing and cannot seem to find (but I'm still looking) are:
Big Jake
Chisum
The High and the Mighty
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Barbarian and the Geisha

True Grit (the new one, not the old one)

I do have some of the music from some of these films on compilation CD's, and although they're good and enjoyable to listen to, I try to find "complete" soundtracks that feature just the music from the particular film. I've purchased some from Varese Saraband, and Buysoundtrax.com, but as yet have not found any of these on ebay. But, that's half the fun of collecting John Wayne memorabilia, THE SEARCH!

The Cowboys by John Williams would be my favourite selection.

Elmer Bernstein True Grit Sons of Katie Elder Mc Q

Max Steiner The Searchers is a classic its own right and Richard Hageman
virtually visualises the Stagecoach story.

Also, worth a mention is Rio Lobo by Jerry Goldsmith

Thanks Mike! I just went to Buysoundtrax's ebay store and bought the True Grit Complete Original Score CD. They did not Big Jake in stock, but I'll keep looking. I have dealt with them before and they're pretty reliable, and easy to work with. Thanks again!

Great to hear you got True Grit Bob you will enjoy it.

The other guy from Germany is okay to deal with as well.

I use him rather than buysoundtrax because any CDs arrive with me within a few days as it is coming from Germany rather than USA.

Price wise they are much the same

Hi:
I've been crusing and I have found this site:
http://www.buysoundtrax.com/john_wayne-cds.html
Go there and it will tell you what soundtracks are available on CD's. I question that they do have all of these. Nor do they offer all the soundtracks that are current. However they do have quite a few.

I think some of the titles are getting close to the 3000 mark and will soon be discontinued.

I had a copy of Big Jake that leaves less 300 units left.

Nice that they are having a success but if you are missining titles I would act soon.

Nice little 4 CD Dimtri Tiomkin CD with some rare John Wayne tracks.

It is a Silvo Screen City of Prague Orchestra

The Alamo and and Rio Bravo are also great plus Gunfight at OK Corral and Jimmy Stewart movie Night Passage.

Mike,

It took a little searching, but if you look at

http://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2003/May03/red_river.html

you will see pictured the same album shown on Napster. I believe this is the Marco-Polo release, and from everything I read, it is the Moscow Symphony and Choir featured.

Hi Jim and Mike

The one illustrated is the same as the one have. its interesting reading the various comments particularly about the singing. All in all though I think this is a very good CD.
On a par with the Searchers How The West Was Won and Red River I would go for How The West Was Won Red River and The Searchers.

If I were to expand two very good CD's that would stand with the other three are The films of Elmer Bernstein Volume 1 The Comancheros and True Grit, and Volume 2 The Shootist, Big Jake, Cahill United States Marshall.

Having played Stagecoach and Fort Apache I wasn't particularly impressed with Stagecoach reasonably happy with Fort Apache. Perhaps I expected more.

Hi Arthur

Those soundtracks were the first two I bought as LPs I think from DL Cutts and being the first soundtrack records I had I thought they were great

Funny thing when I bought them as CDs I expected to get beter reproduction but thought they sound a little dull particularly on Shootist and Cahill so much so that I now prefer other options

True Grit, Commancheros and Big Jake I have as complete OST and I prefer the Shootist and Cahill selections on new True Grit CD.

It proberably because they are new selections and are digital and I dont pump the volume like I have to on the Elmer Bernstein CDs.

Howdy All,
I received the new True Grit soundtrack yesterday, and after listening to it I have to say that I am very pleased. I also liked the "additional" tracks of The Shootist, Big Jake, and Cahill. They were done as concert suites, and are very nice. I heartily recommend this CD to anyone who has not heard it.
Best,

Jerry Goldsmith, his score for In Harms Way was spectacular.

wbbison,

Wow! Your resourcefulness has resulted in some excellent information. Thank you SO much!

Since the auction link will expire, rather than posting that link, I am instead copying and pasting all the information from the auction regarding the set. Pricey? Yes. An amazing collection of material in one neat package? Absolutely! Do I expect to own one soon? :))):

I would be very interested in hearing Elly's and Colorado Bob's opinion of what is being offered. What I see is much of the music already available on soundtrack albums from different movies, but also music from some of Duke's older movies (see CDs 8 and 9 for more info), that is otherwise only available by popping in the movie itself. The DVD appears to be a compilation of special features from a number of DVDs, all in one place.

I found a link (here: http://www.systemrecords.co.uk/wayne-john-music-poster-p-1017829.html) that tells essentially the same thing about this set. I agree, it's pretty expensive, but I think I would like to someday have a copy. I already have a lot of the music on the various soundtracks in my collection, but there are still some that I don't have. I do wonder though, if some of these were simply lifted from the films themselves, and thus contain dialog as well. I'd rather have a "clean" version of the music. The book looks pretty interesting as well, especially if it has all the posters, lobby cards, etc that the ad claims it has. I guess I'll have to start playing the lottery though if I ever hope to be able to afford this collection!

The Bear Family Records newly released JOHN WAYNE's WEST- IN MUSIC AND PICTURES is listed on Bear Family's website at 175 euros which at today's conversion rate is £156.43
It is also listed on Amazon.com at us$289.98 which again using today's conversion rate is uk £173.93.
These facts refute several suggestions on the forum that we have over-priced this set.
We are not denying that this fantastic set is cheap but it consists of a handsome case which holds an LP sized 464 page book, full of Posters from John Wayne's western Films. It is printed on very high quality paper and weighs an enormous amount, and is in our oppinion a definitive publication of John Wayne memorabilia.
I am a little biased because we were asked to provide images of British John Wayne Posters for the book.
The set contains another bound album which contains the 10 CDs and 1 DVD.
I trust that this clarifies the matter regarding pricing.
dukeuk,

Thank you so much for your input on this subject!

Having learned more about the exact content of the set (thanks again to wbbison for sending us in the right direction!), I would agree with you that the set is not necessarily overpriced. I also appreciate Colorado Bob's remarks, since he is an avid collector of audio of John Wayne; if it's something he wants, that says a lot to me. As worth the price as I suspect it is, it is still rather expensive for most of us. That being said - like Bob, I think it is something I would someday like to own. But right now, I have to consider how many groceries $289 would buy for the family.

Just curious - are you affiliated with Bear Family Records? Maybe you could tell us a little more about the making of this set, and your part in it. I suspect it was a long time in the making. Also, if you are able, could you speak to Bob's question about whether the music from some of the older films is a a 'clean' recording or simply taken from the movie audio?

I don't suppose anyone has any idea where I can find the soundtrack for The Shootist? Not the "Digital Premiere Recordings" CD, which features a few songs from The Shootist, but the actual soundtrack. I remember seeing it mentioned once several years ago, but have not been able to find it again, and also not able to locate a copy of this soundtrack.

It seems to me that there are several John Wayne films that had wonderful soundtracks, but they have never been put out on LP or CD. Films like Chisum, Cahill, Stagecoach, Hondo, and several others. All of these films have great musical scores, but alas, no soundtrack CD or LP.

As far as I know it's virtually impossible to find that soundtrack to buy, as it's so long out of print and a much sought after rarity that the price would be outrageous.

A few days ago I bought the new 3CD Soundtrack Collection from John Wayne“s The Alamo! It is new record done by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (O.K. some people don“t like that, but I do) and they have done a great job of recording the complete score. It is real great to listen to, almost like a symphony!

You can find this collection here

They will release the soundtrack of Legend of the Lost in a very limited edition soon! I have ordered one now for me.

I too have received mine. I unwrapped it and saw two cd's. One with Legend of the Lost and another one that showed The Last Man On Earth. I played them both and they are the same. They sent them this way because they went with the wrong art work. I wonder? Does that mean they have 2000 instead of 1000?

Dukesfan

I ordered the Soundtrack from Hellfighters today (and the new Soundtrack album of the TV-Show JAG, but that“s nothing related to the Duke...).

You can find the CD here:
http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Bravo-Ricky-Nelson/dp/B001GSYTKW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1277112840&sr=1-1

The running time of the CD is only about 25 minutes, but it“s great! You find all the fine songs from Rio Bravo there, sung by Dean Martin & Ricky Nelson and the "De Guello" performed by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

"The restless Kid" I think is the same melody as used for the song "Johnny Yuma"...

Actually, orchestras in foreign countries have been recording scores from many movies and doing a generally great job. Good sound and performance from a solid majority of these efforts!

I concur. This 3 disc re-recording of "The Alamo" is all we're ever going to get of the complete score. There's about two and one half hours of music from the film itself - including the deleted scenes. Some of the alternate cues are interesting too.
Have to play it a few more times.

The War Wagon! Cool! Now I have to see if I can get a copy! I would like to have the "John Wayne's West in Music and Poster Art" but the price is just way too high, especially since I already have all the trailers and most of the music. If I am not mistaken, the music is taken straight from the films? If so, then I am afraid I will just have to pass on it until the price comes way WAY down. Thanks for the heads up on the War Wagon though! I have the original soundtrack, by Nelson Riddle, and also the Dimitri Tiompkin 3 Disc set which has a few War Wagon pieces, but this one seems to have it all!

Also, if you all haven't yet received the 3 disc Alamo, the Hellfighters and Legend of the Lost CDs, I highly recommend them all! I would also recommend Mike Boltz's (I think that's how you spell his name) CD of the Alamo tribute. A very good companion CD to the soundtrack CDs.

There have been a batch of Duke soundtracks released of late, most limited editions, including:

North to Alaska (Intrada)
Hellfighters (Intrada)
Legend of the Lost (Kritzerland)
Barbarian and the Geisha (Kritzerland)

Good to see some are filling the non-western gaps.

The music for Hatari does have a score for most scenes one is called Big Bwana next one Just for Tonight is the piece of music you hear just before Dallas hears from Sean that they voted her to stay. And Fathers Feathers thats the one when the ostriches escape as well as the Hatari theme I have had them about three years now downloaded them.

Thanks Rocklin, I just posted about the Just for Tonight song. No answer to the question. It is a really easy one, LOL....why I chose it for the first one. Didn't realize those other names. Going to try to find the score on YouTube. Sure enjoy the music while watching the movie though. Cya, Keith

Here's the blurb from the Intrada website re the Hatari CD, plus track listing.

Special Collection Volume 200 is neat milestone! World premiere release of actual Henry Mancini soundtrack to terrific Howard Hawks adventure film set in Africa, starring John Wayne, Elsa Martinelli, Red Buttons. Wayne and company capture rare animals for various world zoos. Some species are easier to catch than others. Elephants inspire Mancini to create legendary tune "Baby Elephant Walk", available for first time ever in its original soundtrack guise. Famous swaggering tune for high register Eb clarinet also figures during climactic "Search For Dallas". Leopard, buffalo, monkey, giraffe, ostrich all get their say but incredibly dangerous rhino sequences are what bring out Mancini's equally legendary main theme, often heard on choir of French horns in unison. In 1962, Mancini re-recorded just 30 minutes of highlights for admittedly sensational RCA album. In companionship with that album, now enjoy Mancini's complete original recordings, presented mostly in stereo from Paramount Pictures scoring session elements. A few sections required use of mono stems to allow restoration of complete soundtrack. This new hour long release carries landmark significance: every Mancini album during this most famous period of his career (Breakfast At Tiffany's, Hatari, Charade, Experiment In Terror, The Pink Panther) was heavily truncated and completely re-arranged with emphasis on dance mood. Along with new release of Charade, this marks exciting debut of an actual Mancini soundtrack from the era! Danger, romance, thrills, comedy, all getting rich Mancini melody! Unforgettable original campaign artwork is icing on the cake. Henry Mancini conducts. Available while quantities and interest remain.

Thanks to my friends for pointing out the extensive score to "Hatari". I haven't had the time to revisit the movie and music, but will do so soon.
I know that the score played through in the film, but my point was that it wasn't effective for me.
As counterpoint, I posted that "The Great Escape" will be shown theatrically. Now that is a film with one hell of a score with a rousing main title march theme that immediately sets the indomitable resolve of the POWs against the tuba accentuated authoritarianism of their German captors.
There are themes for several of the individual characters (Blythe, Ives, etc.) that heighten their scenes; a claustrophobic motif whenever the gates close or the guard towers are shown; and a wild, thumping theme for Hilts racing for freedom on his motorcycle.
The music in this film permeates the viewing experience. I didn't catch that from "Hatari".
Of course, every once in a while I'm wrong, so I'll view it again with my ears and mind open.
Not tomorrow though. I discovered that the remastered "Lawrence of Arabia" is being screened for one day only. I'll pack my sunblock and canteen and head for Aquaba.

We deal in lead, friend.

Finally got round to listening to the new CD release of Sands of Iwo Jima.
Unfortunately the source material seems to be from the film and it is quite poor.
Obviously in mono and very flat. Shame but not anything they could do more with the original material.
It'd be great to have a re-recording similar to the fantastic 3 disc Alamo release.

A bunch of us have and agree wholeheartedly with you. It usually sells out rapidly STILL. I play it as background to post music, LOL! Glad you liked it Dukesfan. Do you think you could do me a big favor and put that in the Group Watch. You might look back over it....some good screen catches in it although you might have to go back a few pages. Still have half a month on Hatari. Haven't got to the good stuff really yet. And there are sketch prizes. If you win something and you don't see a sketch you would like, send me the one you want.

HAGO, Keith (or Lady Hawk as Gorch and Dooley have dubbed me, LOL)

Might check out the sketch page....I MAY have found something in the end of THE SHOOTIST that no one has ever seen. OR NOT, LOL!

Just got word today that the long awaited soundtrack for The Shootist is finally being released. In fact, it was released yesterday April 9, 2013. It is a double album CD, and also contains the soundtrack from The Sons of Katie Elder, a remastered version of the original LP that came out years ago, but with one new addition, the super rare Ernie Sheldon single of the title song. Sheldon was songwriter that penned the song. It was released on a promo 45rpm record when the movie was released, and is extremely rare these days. Here is a link to LaLaLand Records who is putting this CD out:

Just got word today that the long awaited soundtrack for The Shootist is finally being released. In fact, it was released yesterday April 9, 2013. It is a double album CD, and also contains the soundtrack from The Sons of Katie Elder, a remastered version of the original LP that came out years ago, but with one new addition, the super rare Ernie Sheldon single of the title song. Sheldon was songwriter that penned the song. It was released on a promo 45rpm record when the movie was released, and is extremely rare these days.
