View Full Version : Nature Or Nurture?

I noticed in a couple other threads here that several people have commented that their kids like John Wayne movies.

Curiously, this is one of the things my wife rolls here eyes about... My 10-month-old LOVES John Wayne movies. Whenever I tune into one on a movie channel, or when I throw in a DVD, regardless of what else she is doing, she stops, and stares at the TV, watching the Duke. His westerns are her favorite late-night pacifier to fall asleep to, having her last bottle of the day. My wife keeps telling me that I might as well forget about challenging paternity because of this behavior (and a couple others!). :D

I noticed several others here commenting on the same thing, so my question is, are they inheriting this from their papa (or mama), or is there something about the Duke?

(Personally, I think it's a combination of his voice and his genuinness, which is so rare on TV these days.)

mma10mm,

well i would have to say it could be a bit of both but just one question did you and your wife watch the dukes movies together while she was expecting as they say that what a baby hears while in the womb influences them after they are born make of this what you will. for my son it was a bit of both we enjoyed watching movies on rainy days when he was a little tacker and most of them were the old classics. keep letting your little girl enjoy the movies as long as you can as they grow up so fast.

Alot of people will argue that your ten month old daughter is just paying attention because it's just the TV attracting her. But if she mainly does this when you have the Duke on you might have something there.

We didn't watch many Duke movies during the pregnancy. As a matter of fact, we watched fewer then than we do now. My wife isn't a huge fan of movies at all, let alone the Duke, but she is softening some (;)). What TV we did watch during the pregnancy was usually those pregnancy shows on TLC and Discovery channels.

Monique,
I've heard all those things too, but I don't buy it at all. She certainly has preferences, and it's not just about pretty colors flashing or lyrical music playing... She loves Noggin, but hates the purple dinosaur, loves John Wayne, but passes on Clint Eastwood, etc. Also, she likes just about every kind of music, except rap! (Thank goodness!!! !!!!) Besides, after watching the way she processes information and learns, I can't believe she just responds to simulus. No, I think this is certainly a preference.

If your kid starts going onto the JW messageboard any time soon then its defiently nature. :D

Personally speaking for me it was nature after watching Big Jake, Clint Eastwood seemed a pale reflection.

keep looking after her and encouraging her love in the classic movies

Well, from personal experience, I can offer the following observations.

It's really only been in the past 5 years that we've been getting into collecting John Wayne movies (the past 2 more seriously), so my youngest kids have had the heaviest dose of the Duke, and the seven year old boy is a die hard fan, to the core! His sister, almost 5, couldn't care less, and would rather go in another room and watch Shirley Temple. My grandson, also 7, who practically lives here, can at times be almost hostile towards John Wayne. My older kids haven't had the exposure, and are ambivalent at best.

So . . . from our experience, if you have a child who is a true John Wayne fan, it's like finding a diamond in the rough - a real treasure!

I know we have several members who have children, who joined the board since this thread saw the light of day. I'm sure they can offer some insight here as well.

As an update for us, our son, who will be 11 in May, made the comment just yesterday that he appreciates many John Wayne movies more now that he is "older" - films that he found boring before, he understands now. He is still the only fan among our 6 kids and 2 grandkids.

I have been a fan for a long time but just started collecting a few years ago.

Anyway, my girls (16,10,6) have John Wayne movies they like to watch, but mostly don't really care. I think it is more, they get to spend time with dad than anything else. My son (4) on the other hand loves JW westerns and will sit without me and watch them. He also enjoys the movies where he is a pilot, I think that is more about the planes than anything else, but that adds a few more movies he will watch with me.

One of the reasons I included Associate Junior Members in
When ,Were You Born? was so to involve the kids.
I even prinred my 6 year old is own JWMB junior
membership certificate.
He is very intreseted in John Wayne and cowboys, generally.
