I finally found this article that I would like to share. John Wayne has held a spot on the top ten list of America's favorite Actor. :D

1993-ranked #2 beaten by Clint Eastwood
1994-ranked #2 beaten by Clint Eastwood
1995-ranked #1 beats Clint Eastwood
1996-ranked #2 beaten by Mel Gibson
1997-ranked #4 beaten by #1 Clint Eastwood, #2 Mel Gibson, and #3 Tom Cruise
1998-ranked #2 beaten by Harrison Ford
1999-ranked #2 beaten by Harrison Ford
2000-ranked #2 beaten by Harrison Ford
2001-ranked #6; #1 Julia Roberts, #2 Tom Hanks, #3 Harrison Ford, #4 Mel Gibson, #5 Sean Connery
2002-ranked #6; #1 Tom Hanks, #2 Mel Gibson, #3 Julia Roberts, #4 Harrison Ford, #5 Sean Connery

I have to say anyone who loses to a dead guy (meanig no disrespect to John Wayne), has got to be embarrassed! :P Having said that, John Wayne is the only deceased actor who has managed to hold on to the top ten position, let alone get put on it for one year only!

Here is the link if you would like to check it out and see who John Wayne beat out!

Baron,
I found this poll quite interesting. It clearly shows how large the fan base is for the Duke. I'm surpised at the number of visitors that I see looking at this website that don't join in. I used the link that you set. Again I found it quite interesting. Thank you.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Seems that everyone who has something to compete with, refer back to John Wayne. He seems to always be a subject of conversation. I guess that can be credited to the cable stations like AMC, TBS, WGN, Turner Classic Movies, TNT, Turner South, Fox Cable Movies, Encore, Hallmark, and Starz Western Classics.

Amazing, that of the living actors that have stayed in the top 10 since 1993, only two who stayed are listed. I think a lot of Mel Gibson, and Clint Eastwood is kinda like John Wayne. But I am amazed that Duke is still just as big today as he was during his movie making days.

If you figure the average, He is ranked at 2.8. Mel Gibson is at 2.9. Clint Eastwood is at 3.7 Duke has good numbers, for not making any movies for 27 years.

Thanks for the info, Baron.

Cheers, Hondo B)

P.S. Duke Rules Today and FOREVER!

John Wayne passed away before I was born, he still has many fans like me. I think this Harris poll clearly demonstrates what an American Icon John Wayne is still to this date.

This is all very interesting, with respect to the Duke staying popular with the public. I have a funny feeling that we are part of a popular movement of folks that are turning back to the values and ethics that the movies of John Wayne so aptly portrayed. We are on the cutting edge of a larger John Wayne fan club, due to his movies being easily available (through purchase and cable showings), where more and more people are learning about the Duke and getting real comfortable watching him.

One good example is all of us kooks pounding away on our keyboards day after day, with more joining every day.

Not only are our numbers going to swell tremendously, but the availability of all JW's movies on DVD will become greater and cheaper. Hopefully, this might affect our country as a whole as we turn in this direction.

Regarding John Waynes popularity "The Daily Mirror" a very popular british Newspaper did a poll for actress/actor of the millenium, guess who won with a whopping 32% of the votes.

They also wrote this very nice little paragraph.

The ongoing popularity of the Duke continues into the New Millenium. We feel that it is due not only to the unique screen presence the Duke had, but the virtually unmatched body of work that he achieved during his career. Combined with the values that he indentified with and projected not only in his screen roles but his own way of life, the results of these polls leave many wuaestions unanswered about the many 'stars' that have come and gone since.

May the enduring legacy of the Duke continue.

Who can argue about that result or those sentiments?
