View Full Version : Revival of sorts for a discussion of a suggestion once made.
The Ringo Kid April 11th, 2007, 08:13 PM Kevin, Moderators and all. How about a revival of sorts (and an addition), for those Marshall badges that someone said were here?
Remember when there was a discussion of sorts, for possible ranks for members for achieving certain number of posts?
If interested, I found a way to make it really a simple one and is not offensive to anyone.
How about awarding badges in three rankings only -each in three grades.
For example:
The ranks:
1) Deputy.
2) Sheriff.
3) U.S. Marshall.
Each rank in Bronze, Silver and then Gold. Each color changed at every 1,000 postings.
For example:
Deputy:
1) 1 post to 1,000 post would be a bronze deputy badge.
2) Silver deputy badge from 1,001 postings to 2,000 posts.
3) Gold for 2001 to 3,000 postings.
4) Bronze Sheriff badge for 3,001 posts to 4,000 posts. And etc.
How about it Kevin/ Moderators? It would be Western-themed and I think would look nice to have by peoples names.
And YES, the ""ranks"" would not mean anyone is better than anyone else or anything like that. I just think they would look cool next to peoples names.
If at all possible, i'd like to read some opinions on this ;-D
DakotaSurfer April 11th, 2007, 08:52 PM Along those lines... I think anyone under 100 posts should be called a Tenderfoot with some sort of icon for that level. I've created icons for categories on other sites... here's an example.

Also... here's badge I got from somewhere.

I like the concept but a new level every 1000 is a bit much. Maybe every 250 or 500.
gt12pak April 11th, 2007, 10:00 PM Sounds intriguing. Any other thoughts on this?
The Ringo Kid April 12th, 2007, 05:37 PM Hi Dakota, GT.
Dakota, great icons! Now if we can just get some feedback from all the POWERS-THAT-BE, on this site hint hint hint hint.
C'mon Kevin, Moderators, how about it?
Cheers and Rootbeers--Carl.
Lt. Brannigan April 15th, 2007, 03:29 AM I like that idea very much, in fact I support it.
The Ringo Kid April 16th, 2007, 04:45 PM Now if we could just get K~E~V~I~N to acknowledge this topic and let us know his thoughts................. ;-D
Kevin April 16th, 2007, 04:46 PM acknowledge
The Ringo Kid April 16th, 2007, 06:21 PM Funny man.....
SO whats your opinion on this? ;-D
DakotaSurfer April 16th, 2007, 06:47 PM There is a possibility that this board won't allow for level icons. Only level names so it may not be a choice Kevin can make. Even so... board upgrades can be taxing on the server. I believe he just upgraded when I joined so maybe he's still working out some problems. We are limited on image sizes. Icons may stretch out limits. Plus there's the coding factor. I don't know this board, only IPB, and it's not that flexible. But a change later this summer might be nice if possible.
The Ringo Kid April 16th, 2007, 08:00 PM Hi Dakota, you might be right on this. For me, im the self-proclaimed--worlds worst computer dummy and I sure do not know how many things work dealing wiht this stuff.
At any rate, maybe Kevin can 'splain it to us here if its possible or if the badges is a no-go. Does not really matter I guess, I just thought that an icon or sorts would look cool next to the names.
Kevin April 16th, 2007, 09:35 PM This can be done in vB.
We had this discussion a while back, and it just sorta got kicked to the curb. I'm willing to get it implemented if we can come to some sort of consensus on the details.

The bugs are settled (for the most part), and the limits can be adjust to accoumdate the icons.
DakotaSurfer April 16th, 2007, 11:45 PM Just throwing an idea out there... I think changing levels every 1000 is too far apart. I think maybe 250 or 500 would be better or there just won't be any interest in it.
Since no one has hit 5000 yet, that's where I stopped. There are all kinds of newer modern badge images online, someone with good graphics expertice can manipulate some online images. The first few levels I just put icon ideas, it can grow from there. The badges could start out simply like a cheap tin silver star, then to a gold star and so on. Maybe once you hit 2500 they could all be gold.
The Ringo Kid April 17th, 2007, 07:58 PM Any of the above sounds good to me. A reason I like something like this so much is that it does make one really feel good to get recognized by other means--for posting here.
One great case in point is the "awards" that are used on this site: www.ww2f.com (http://www.ww2f.com) Only these "awards" are military "awards" from different countries and different eras. Most people like them and a very few either do not or--don't really care one way or the other.

I kinda like the level suggestion that surfer has proposed. What is the concensus?
REASR April 19th, 2007, 10:32 PM Sheep Dip!
DakotaSurfer April 24th, 2007, 11:37 PM What kind of an answer is sheep dip? Anyway... here's another kind of badge we could use.

I am up for whatever you guys decide. DP's looks good to me.
chester7777 April 25th, 2007, 11:10 AM Sorry it's taken me so long to chime in on this discussion, I've been out of town twice in two weeks. That, and running our little hot dog cart, has taken up a bunch of time.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand - I think the level icons are fun, and DS's suggestion sounds good to me, regarding the numbers for level recognition.
Thanks, guys, for all your suggestions!

Hi Dakota, I think that in this case "sheep dip" can be compared to that famous remark that was made by the American Commander of Bastogne (General Anthony McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne Div "The Screaming Eagles") to the German Commander whose forces had surrounded Bastogne (Gen Meinrad von Lauchert or Heinrich von Luttwitz - whomever had commanded the 47th Panzer Korps) anyway, that famous remark was: "Aw Nuts" made by Gen Anthony McAuliffe - the American commander of Bastogne.
The remark Reasr made was I believe, strictly negative.
On the otherhand, im glad others seem to support the idea. I cannot see any harm in having a tiny badge next to one's name - even if we had not earned the real deal.
gt12pak April 25th, 2007, 04:57 PM I kinda like it myself Ringo, even if I'm only Deputy Sheriff. Sheep dip was also quoted by the Duke in The Shootist.
The Ringo Kid April 25th, 2007, 05:15 PM Hi Deputy Sheriff GT and thanks. The more support for this, the merrier. Also, I had not known sheep dip was used in a Duke movie but I have heard it used before somewhere?
gt12pak April 25th, 2007, 06:11 PM Yup. Right after the shootin' lesson he says someone (name fails me for some reason:ohwell: ) was always full of sheep dip.
DakotaSurfer April 25th, 2007, 06:34 PM The remark Reasr made was I believe, strictly negative.
That's what I took it as but it caught me off guard since I don't even know the person. And coming from a Mod... tsk tsk tsk All I can respond is: PSHAW
The Ringo Kid April 25th, 2007, 07:51 PM Hi Dakota, I only know him from a few of his replies to some postings I made. I didn't even know he was a Modarator?
Kevin April 25th, 2007, 10:04 PM Sheep Dip!
I take it that you don't like this idea?
Lt. Brannigan April 26th, 2007, 01:18 AM I like this idea very much, so much so that I can't wait to be Lt. Marshal. Brannigan!
The Ringo Kid April 26th, 2007, 05:41 PM I just don't see what would be so distracting about having a badge icon? I mean, the size of those colored circles next to our names would suffice. Again, please take a look at the badge icons used here: www.ww2f.com (http://www.ww2f.com) the law enforcement badge icons could be of similar or slightly larger in size, and really would look nice. P.S. look for one of my postings or one for Erich, Kai, or Martin Bull and you will see a nice representation of badge icons.
DukePilgrim April 26th, 2007, 06:34 PM I know I missed must of this conversation but what about Texas Ranger :hyper: or Mountie.:yeaahh:
Personally , I prefer to be a Bandit :star: but I guess I going to be a Sheriff:ohwell:
gt12pak April 26th, 2007, 06:59 PM Yup. Right after the shootin' lesson he says someone (name fails me for some reason:ohwell: ) was always full of sheep dip.
Bat Masterson is full of....sheep dip. DP, think I'd like to be an outlaw myself.

That has been Reasr's (Our 'ACTIVE' Moderator) sole contribution to this messageboard over the past couple of months. As I have said on another thread I think its about time that he was relieved of his moderating responsibilities. His comment in this thread was complete off the wall claptrap that was intended to do nothing but to draw attention to himself. Personally I am finding it difficult to comprehend how this person has remained as a moderator for so long as on an overall basis his contributions to the board have been minimal and frankly inadequate. I understand Kevin’s position as both his friend and due to the fact that he was a founding and influential member of the board but I also believe he is a very poor ambassador for the board as well.

DakotaSurfer April 26th, 2007, 10:09 PM You can have people be with you from the beginning and then they switch or leave or become disgruntled for some silly reason.. I've seen it many times on other sites. It may not be the case here but I have to agree that if someone didn't like my idea/suggestion they could have just said they didn't like it or say it privately but to openly call it crap is kind of rude, especially from staff.
We're all mature here and Mods are not really a necessity except for merging thread, watching for dup posts or other little tasks. It's not something one person can do but until you've Moderated a site needing 24/7 constant intervention. Banning a half dozen people every day and removing vulgar posts, it would make you appreciate this nice friendly forum.
I've been playing with ranks on my little forum and here is another possible scenario... not much different but another option.

I deeply resent that. Dakota! I thought we were going to be friends and here you go insulting me!
The Ringo Kid April 27th, 2007, 06:32 PM I'd be happy to just have a small badge icon next to my name--numbers don't matter much to me. BUt the idea of it was that to me anyway, having such "award" next to ones name simply looks cool and to me, makes me feel a bit more appreciated. ;-D

To be fair to Reasr he has been posting on this messageboard for the past couple of years like a bear with a sore head, I think your description of his being disgruntled is an accurate one. I'm getting tired of people tip toeing around him just because he's a disillusioned moderator with an axe to grind. Reasr generally creates an air of unease when he’s about which I have never particularly liked. I remember some years ago he criticised me for making too many posts, I only had a couple of hundred at the time, goodness knows what he thinks now. This issue with Rease simply highlights the point I tried to make in an earlier post about the negativity that surrounds the board when 40% of its moderators are either inactive, disgruntled or both.

Kevin April 27th, 2007, 08:36 PM Robbie,
Now it's 40% of the mods are disgruntled and/or inactive? This discussion has run it course, and your point HAS been made. If anyone would like to discuss this further then please feel free to PM me and I'd be happy talk further. Plus, this is a little off the topic for this thread.

That should have been 1/3 not 40% my mistake. However this is not off topic as Reasr was recently quite rude in this thread AFTER I made my suggestions on another thread. Surely moderators should be setting a better example, incidentally while my complaints have been heard by you, I have yet to hear whether or not they will be acted upon.

Stumpy April 28th, 2007, 10:47 AM Small point - marshal (in the law enforcement sense) only has one "L" instead of two.
chester7777 April 28th, 2007, 11:00 AM Small point - marshal (in the law enforcement sense) only has one "L" instead of two.
Yup, according to the dictionary, it does seem to be the preferred spelling, although it does list "marshall" as a variant spelling. But now that you mention it, I guess I have always seen it with only one "l".
Chester :newyear:
DakotaSurfer April 28th, 2007, 01:57 PM "Marshall" is an American english spelling for the military rank marshal.
Marshall
An English and Scottish status surname for someone who was in charge of the horses of a royal household, or an occupational surname for someone who looked after horses, or was responsible for the custody of prisoners.
Either way is proper by preference. So I prefer the American spelling over the British. Plus you can sit there and criticize all you want, this is simply a suggestion for new levels. Use them or don't but I didn't come here for a spelling lesson.

I like that, "makes you feel like part of a community" I never thought of it that way but that really has a great sound to it. We are a community.
And either spelling of Marshal or Marshall, looks good to me and either way; we know what its about.

dukefan1 April 30th, 2007, 12:48 AM I don't see the harm in having badges for levels. It's a nice touch that will give people recognition for participation. The ranks stated so far are great by me as long as the badges don't dominate a lot of space. I just have one complaint....No room for a Pinkerton Agent? :stunned: hee hee
Mark
DakotaSurfer April 30th, 2007, 02:19 AM From what I've read about the Pinkerton's they were a pretty corrupt group of thugs. I'd put them on the same level as some of the bounty hunters of that time period. They used un-savory methods to do their jobs and lets say stepped outside some boundaries to accomplish their missions. But that's one perspective.
Maybe as part of the forum we could create a Wild West game. Each week an active member of the site could be selected to play a catch me if you can game. And others could be selected as bounty hunters, Pinkerton Agents and law enforcement. The member would have to leave clues around the site to figure our a location somewhere in the US that the outlaw is hinting at... let say this week my name is Billy the Kid... I'm hiding near a canyon where the sky is hard and clear. The cops would makes guesses as to where Billy is... at the end of the week of when ever, if someone catches him or say guesses his location they get a gold star on their account. At the end of the year, the member of with the most stars would win a piece of memorabilia someone might donate.
Just a wild thought.
