that should read, "One thing that I feel is missing".

Duke's image in the background of this site, it's odd to come and not see a big picture of the Duke plastered on the background. Course there's probably a good reason such as readability that keeps that from happening.

Copyright or Co-operation may be the problem in this area but Im sure Kevin will advise

That was what I was thinking after I pondered for a few minutes. But surely they can't be that petty, can they?

Well I'm not a fan of having a busy background, so that is the reason. I'm wanting to re-do the header and include images of the duke simular to the other setup we had.

I would think that plastering images of The Duke might be a problem since Wayne Enterprises has a reputation of taking down anything they don't get a cut of, just look at Round Valley Days that had to change their name unless they paid a bounty of $5000 to use the name.

But another reason I would be against a cluttered forum is this is not a BT site. This is a forum who's main reason for being is for discussion, information and user generated content. If I want to look at pictures of The Duke I can just look at my walls in our family room or put a movie in the DVD player. Plus the format of a forum, continuous blocks of members comments/statements/discussion sort of fills the page. We all know why we are here. And all of us put up avatars of John Wayne and most of us use quotes as signatures. That is how we put our touch to the board.

Boards or forums have been around since the early 80's. We used to call them BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. They have always been text oriented and images back then were frowned on simply because of the slower computers and modem Internet access. BBS of the 80's changed to chat rooms of the 90's and now we have forums of the 21st century. Places like MySpace are cluttered messes, people showing off pictures or family images or some things I won't mention but I definitely don't want this turned into another MySpace.

A nice header image of The Duke would be appropriate... maybe little images from the 4 genre's he has acted in. Western, Military, Drama and Comedy.

I was not wishing for a full splash page of him, just a transparent picture of him. But I do agree with the reasoning that Kevin gave. Thanks for all the kind and patient replies.

Dakota has a point in that you do have to be careful with how you use Duke's image. We don't do anything here to cast a bad light on John Wayne and it is a great, friendly site all around. But Wayne Enterprises have been known to go after tribute sites before. I use to have a tribute site on msn and got a letter from Mike Wayne's lawyer telling me to cease and desist my site because I used Duke's image and name. And my site was not in anyway detremental to his image. So, you do have to kind of be careful.

As for images of John Wayne in the background? I have no feelings on that either way. I'll tell you one thing I do like...The signature pics that Lt. Brannigan, Kevin and a few others have put on. They show your devotion and regard for what we all come here for. John Wayne. I may be coming up with one soon, myself

Kevin, I love the site you have provided for us fans. You handle it with the hands of a true fan. You only step in when needed and have handled things better than can be expected when trouble does arrive. You strive to make it better all the time, and I thank you for it. Long Live The Duke!

Big fancy sig's are nice but you have to remember they also lengthen the pages since it add more height to every post. A couple lines of text may take up a ¼ or ½ inch of space where these sigs can take up 5 - 8 times that. I've used the big sigs elsewhere maybe something more appropriate here are userbars. Or if your going to use them many places set limits... like no more than 100 pixels high and 250 pixels wide. But this board doesn't have a button on each post that takes you back to the top of the page which is helpful when the pages get long due to sigs.

Instead of this:

Use something like this:

Personally if pages get too long i just turn the sigs off. I can get through a page faster.

Thanks Mark for the kind words!

But this is a group thing, and without members this place would be a ghost town. When I first started this forum over 7 years ago, I felt that John Wayne deserved a community that was active and alive. Duke's memory and Legacy deserves the best! The mission of this site is to keep Duke's memory in the thoughts of the members here daily.
