People, People, People

We are looking to do alittle promotional activity at the two Duke birthday events in Winterset & in Arizona. What we're looking to do is pass out DukeWayne.com buttons to the general public at the events.

The button would have our logo with the web address plastered on them. DakotaSurfer is attending the Winterset event & Chester7777 will be in Eager, AZ for the John Wayne Days event. Both are willing to be our representatives and give out the buttons to any interested person.

Anyone interested in donating funds to the project is encouraged to contact me via PM, or you can send your contribution to the following link. We are in a tight and time is running out so we need to act quickly.

The cost will be in the neighborhood of $200+ so your help would be appreciated, but as always there is NO OBLIGATION and this is totally voluntary!

All donations collected will go directly to cover the cost of making the buttons and shipping them out to Chester7777 & DakotaSurfer. DakotaSurfer has stepped up and has purchased the buttons a head of time so that we'll have them in time for the events in Winterset & Eager. All funds donated will go to re-pay DakotaSurfer!!

The cost of the buttons have been covered!! Thanks to the ones who donated.

I hope as many of you help us out here. Kevin brought the idea to me to just wear a t-shirt to the celebration but I'll be in my wheelchair and the shirt won't be that visible. But I do wear suspenders and will be putting a couple of the buttons on those. We are progressively moving towards a totally Internet society. Anyone who loves The Duke as much as we do will welcome a site that may help them get answers to some old questions or just chat about The Duke.

We find out a lot of information for each here on this site. I was going to get some button from the other site Jeff told us about that had buttons, shirts, etc. But they had extremely expensive shipping charges so I knew of this button factory that will get them for us real cheap. I felt the buttons would be something more tangible the people could take home with them and an easy way to remember our url.

We won't be selling the buttons, just giving them out to people that ask me about my buttons plus I'll be giving them out to people I talk to on the streets of Winterset. We got the okay from Wayne already and I ordered the buttons today. Whatever you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

The buttons will be 1 3/4" in diameter and very nice looking so it will serve as a good ad for our forum. If I see any of you there just ask me for a button and you too can help display our site name.

People People People... Our buttons are done and on the way. We'll be using them to pass out at the two celebrations in 10 days and hopefully get some new really good members that love The Duke as much as we do. So if you can help out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yee haw! They look great! We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our box, to take to Valley Redonodo Days (aka as John Wayne Days, unofficially of course).

The Mrs. has a vest she is going to cover with buttons - that should get some attention!

P.S. - BTW, how are the donations going??

I'm going to put a few down both sides of my suspenders. The wife might wear a couple too.

Okay so far we've had 3 members donate totaling $70. I have pleadged $50 to the cause so the grand total is at $120.00. We have $103 to go to cover the cost.

Also, someone asked what would be done with any extra donations over and above the cost of the buttons, well any cash left over will be donated the a Duke related charity. The charity has yet to be decided on.

Add my $25 towards the bill. Plus I'm paying for both shipping fees. As far as the charity, I would suggest a donation in the boards name to the new museum. They are asking for any amount. The best thing we could do is help build that new museum.

DS, that's a great idea!

C'mon folks, join in!

If 10 people each donated $100, that would be $1000, with almost $900 to the museum.

If 20 people each donated $50, that would be $1000 . . . .

If 50 people each donated $20, that would be $1000 . . . .

If 100 people each donated $10, that would be $1000 . . . .

I think Dakota Surfer has a great idea, and it would be a great way for this message board to honor John Wayne in a real tangible way.

I realize nobody around here is "Mr. Moneybags" but as you can see from the above example, in numbers we could accomplish quite a bit. Small donations DO add up, if enough people are behind the cause.

There is no reason why we couldn't do something like this... we have at least 50 actively posting members. I know in today's economy things are getting tight. It's up to $3.55 a gallon where I live for gas. 5 months ago out local energy company rose their rates by 70 - 300% depending on what type of customer you were. Some people are seeing their energy bills triple. $20 for me is one trip to the movies for my wife and I or 4 cases of soda. I know Kevin can take donations via PayPal or you can even mail them to him. Not sounding judgmental here but only a handful of people have even come forward.

This is the only forum I've ever joined where I can come and feel it's not just a bunch of clowns wanting attention. We all converse with each other like we've known each other for ages. We've joined for a cause, to keep the memory of John Wayne, he is a true American and is loved all over the world. His birthday is being celebrated in several different countries. With everything he has given the world and still gives after his death, his legacy is helping cancer patients every day. I bet everyone on here has some sort of connection with a past or present cancer patient. I know I have, my wife's father died from cancer less than 45 days before we got married.

Our donation would help keep his memory alive. This museum will serve to show all it's visitors what tremendous contributions this man gave to us. He did so many movies while he was fighting his own battle with cancer. But it didn't stop him. John Wayne has to be remembered forever!!! Please do your part!

Okay, I confess, I'm the one who asked Kevin what would be done with the extra donations. My reason for asking was because I expected/hoped that there would be a huge amount donated. Being the Newbie that I am, I did not know if the board would try to refund money or what. So I hoped my question would at least present the option of donating it to JWCF. I was not aware the museum was also in need and I think donating to them is a wonderful idea as well.

I was surprised and disappointed tonight when I came here and saw how few have donated. Don't mean to make anyone feel bad if they are not able to donate. It's just that I had to cancel my life insurance to have dental work done but I could not let this opportunity pass me by to contribute in honoring my all time hero in some small way.

No reason to confess... I just don't think we worried about extra donations since we still hadn't hit the halfway mark yet.

The reason I mentioned the museum is it was originally pulled from the celebration schedule because Ethan felt there wasn't any big money contributed or pledged to the museum and from what I was told he didn't want to do a groundbreaking on something that may take years to build if the money didn't come in any faster.

I agree, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation and the John Wayne Cancer Institute can use it as well but they have regular contributors and it's been around awhile. I only thought of the museum because of the problem it's having getting funding and I'd like to see it built and visit it in my lifetime.

Cindy,

I'm with DS - no need to confess. It was actually a reasonable question to ask. And also reasonable to consider making a donation to the JWCF. But I am glad that Dakota Surfer suggested the museum, which as he pointed out, doesn't have the same support as the Cancer foundation at this point in time.

And this IS an awesome community of really wonderful folks - I've been feeling comfortable here for a few years now.

You have 4 now Kevin

Keep it coming people. I think it is a good idea for any extra to go to Birthplace.

I agree! After reading Dakota's comments about the museum needing the funding more, I went to their site. The plans for the building are beautiful and what a way to honor JW. It would also be a means in allowing the newer generations to learn about The Duke.

With passing out the buttons and hopefully getting more members, we could become a great source of help in accomplishing some of the things JW would want. What an honor!

I have removed the paypal link for now. I'm working on a setup that would help us keep track of member donations for a possible contribution to the John Wayne museum.

The more I think of it the more I feel that we could do a donation drive over a certain period of time and then make the donation to the museum in our name 'JWMB'.

Oh, and we have completely cover the button cost!!!! I figured it wouldn't take long for us to get this cover! Thanks to all who have donated, it is appriciated. Just today I pulled from the PO Box a donation from a member who used the postal service.

I would personally like to thank everyone that has donated for the buttons we purchased. The wife and I will be spreading them all around Winterset this weekend. I hope we get a lot of new members. And when we return I'm sure to have lots of stories, photos and even some video for you to see. This is really an extraordinary community of people.

52 hours until we leave for Winterset...

I sure hope so... I'd hate to think we're going to pass out 500 buttons for nothing.

Some time ago we have talked about stickers to put on our cars or whatever. Unfortunately I can not remember where we discussed this so I use this topic. Have these stickers ever been made? If so what do they look like? The buttons look nice so perhaps the stickers might look the same? I know I wouild find it a privelege to drive through Belgium advertising the JWMB
