Before I buy any DVDs, I always check out what others say about them either at this (http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:94702) site or in my Leonard Maltin "Movie & Video Guide". Neither reference rates the movie too highly.

BTW, I'm also a Widmark fan and would like to see a release of his "Take The High Ground" with Karl Malden.

There are only going to be a couple new releases of The Dukes movies... one is The John Wayne Film Collection (Without Reservations / Allegheny Uprising / Tycoon / Reunion in France / Big Jim McLain / Trouble Along the Way) (1946). Plus there will be a couple collectors editions of I think Rio Bravo, The Cowboys and True Grit.

True Grit (Special Collector's Edition) (1969)
The Cowboys (Deluxe Edition) (1972)
Rio Bravo (Two-Disc Special Edition) (1959)

But they just released info on two new releases that are not coming out until June 5th, 2007 (My Birthday):

Rio Bravo [HD DVD] (1959)
The Cowboys [HD DVD] (1972)
These will look great on my HD system.Other than that I'd be careful since the others are all just duplicate releases of previously released sets or singles.

I am definetly buying the Rio Bravo Ultimate Edition DVD and will pick up the film collection with the unreleased movies.

As far as HD movies go, I have the TV but I have not gone so far as to bite the bullet and buy a HD DVD player or Blu Ray player yet. To expensive if you ask me....I will wait for that.

I refuse to even consider and next-gen DVD player until they drop as low as $200, as for a HD-TV I am still arguing with myself about the cost of changing out my entertainment center.

I'm like you. We just got our 50" HDTV and I'm gonna hold out for a while for the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I think the picture I get with just the TV and my DVD player is pretty damn good.

If anything upgrade to a "upconvert" DVD player. Its not true HD but it will give you alittle better picture then the regular DVD player. Just be sure to use the HDMI or DVI connections or you will not get the best picture.

I see the Real Mccoys is coming out this month on DVD. I remember watching them on TNN years ago. Just wondering if anyone has ever watched that show in HDTV. If not, then this will be a first.

I had a Sony 5-disc DVD/CD player that crapped out on me so I went to the newer model which happened to be HDMI and it plays them perfectly. Plus it cost less than $200. I have it and my Panasonic HD DVD-R and my HD cable box all plugged into my HDMI hub that goes to my TV. Prices are going down, I just got this Sony HD in March of this year.

What is Hell & High Water about? I am a big Richard Widmark fan!!

I too am a big Widmark fan. I want to buy The Bedford Incident but keep forgetting to do so. That film alone is one of my alltime favorite Widmark films. Another very good one that is out is: The Longships. In this one, he plays a Viking.

Anyway, Hell and High Water is an excellent film inspite of what leonard maltin has to say about it. To borrow a line from Richard Widmark when he was Jim Bowie in The Alamo: "I would not take his word (Maltins) if he told me that night's dark and day's light." The very same for me on Maltin's movie reviews.

Anyway, Hell and High Water, is about a few Scientists who hire an ex-navy officer (Widmark) to command a submarine expedition using a refurbished WWII Japanese submarine.

They are to sail near a secret Chinese base to observe and to stop the Chinese from launching a captured American Bomber and using it to drop the Atomic Bomb on a Chinese (or Russian) city starting WWIII.

This movie has an excellent supporting cast as well such as: Gene Evans as Chief Holter, Cameron Mitchell as Ski-the sonar operator. The crew of this sub is made up of hand-picked WWII navy vets from several navies including from the former Japanese Imperial Navy.

This film is a very good "cold war" film. Also, if it ever gets released, you will have to watch Time Limit with Widmark and Richard Basehart.

Hell and High Water is also directed by the great War Movies directer: Sam Fuller. The same Gent who brought to you The Steel Helmet, Fixed Bayonets, The Big Red One and this movie. Among many others ;-))
