View Full Version : Rio Bravo remakes?
jtchance May 15th, 2007, 12:00 PM Hey folks,
I was doing some reading on one of my favorite movies when I came across something I thought I would bring up on this board to see what you folks thought. I found it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Bravo_(1959_film)
I realize it is Wikipedia, but......
According to the article, there have been 2 "remakes" of Rio Bravo. I have seen Rio Lobo, and El Dorado, but I am not sure I would consider either a "remake" What do you folks think? On a side note, I found the trivia regarding "Assault on Precinct 13" to be interesting.
Stumpy May 15th, 2007, 12:25 PM I have seen Rio Lobo, and El Dorado, but I am not sure I would consider either a "remake" What do you folks think?
I'm like you, JT. I don't consider either a remake of "Rio Bravo" which, by the way, is my very favorite JW film.
In fact, I don't care for "Rio Lobo" at all and think "El Dorado" is a pretty sorry Western, only bearable because of the supporting players.
DakotaSurfer May 15th, 2007, 01:23 PM I realize it is Wikipedia, but......
Exactly... bad source. Definitely not remakes but all of them were fairly decent movies, mainly because of his co-stars. Except for Angie... not a fan of her.
erthomp143 May 15th, 2007, 02:11 PM Because of the success of Rio Bravo John Wayne and Howard Hawks teamed up and made El Dorado almost an exact remake of Rio Bravo and Rio Lobo which used the same basic story line.
gt12pak May 15th, 2007, 03:26 PM I guess that I'm just bass ackwards as I watched El Dorado first and later Rio Bravo. Either way, I really enjoyed both of those movies.
The Ringo Kid May 15th, 2007, 06:31 PM Guess im in a minority here as I liked all three though knowing they are so similar--bothers me not. ;-D The first of the three I ever saw was Rio Lobo and always loved seeing Jack Elam in it.
Lt. Brannigan May 15th, 2007, 07:55 PM Guess im in a minority here as I liked all three though knowing they are so similar--bothers me not. ;-D The first of the three I ever saw was Rio Lobo and always loved seeing Jack Elam in it.
No fears, for I too enjoy Rio Lobo! Jack Elam more than made up for the flaws in the movie.
ZS_Maverick May 15th, 2007, 08:37 PM Once again, I agree with you Ringo. "EL DORADO", and "RIO BRAVO" are my two favorite movies. I think I like "El Dorado" just a little more. But "Rio Lobo" is a fun movie as well. It's got more of a "B-Western" feel to it, but as I've said before, I'll take a good B movie over a lousy blockbuster any day! These are three of my favorites.

The opening Guitar music was great as well. I always wondered what the title of that piece of musick was. Musick is misspelled on purpose and for a private reason. ;-D
gt12pak May 17th, 2007, 05:31 PM Since we seem to be posting similarities in movies, I was just wondering if anyone else here thought that The Searchers and They Rode Together were VERY similar in their plot.
Also I also think that Red River and Bend of the River were similar in their plots too.
What does everyone think?
Lt. Brannigan May 17th, 2007, 05:47 PM Yes I agree that those two films are indeed very similar.
gt12pak May 17th, 2007, 05:51 PM Two????? I posted four. Which two were you talking about? I'd like to get a new topic started here.
The Ringo Kid May 17th, 2007, 06:22 PM Haven't seen They Rode Together for quite sometime and I have forgotten really what its about? but now that you mention it, I can see a similiarity between Red River and Bend of the River--the two main characters that is ;-))
Lt. Brannigan May 17th, 2007, 10:45 PM Two????? I posted four. Which two were you talking about? I'd like to get a new topic started here.
The Searchers and They Rode Together. I didn't see the other till after I had posted.

Similar story lines, but each is individual. Hawks evidently liked the flow of the story and found that it worked well, so kept with that and had enough differences (and characters) to make them each be its own entity.

brick May 18th, 2007, 11:05 AM eldorado is a remake of rio bravo , one with a drunken deputy and the other a sheriff. The are both great movies, I like Rio Bravo best because of Stumpy, Walter Brennan was the best co star in so many movies. Really I like all of The dukes movies , except his detective movies and his oriental movies. That damn toupee looks terrible on him in those movies

Hi ZS, sorry I forgot to reply. I agree with you and also I too, like El Dorado a bit more than Rio Bravo. Something about the Duke, Robert Mitchum and Arthur Hunnicutt; that really went together. James Caan was good in this movie as well as R.G. Armstrong and Christopher George. However, I never could stand Ed Asner and felt he was definately miscast.

I like all of Dukes movies as well. I never cared too much for his Detective movies but still enjoyed them none the less. Of the two, I thought Brannigan was the better.

I wonder how Duke and Asner got along on the filming since their politics were at the opposite ends of the spectrum. From what we've seen of Duke's other situations with liberals, I figure that he respected the other's viewpoint and things went along rather smoothly. And yes, Asner was totally miscast - didn't detract from "El Dorado" being a good movie!

Hondo Duke Lane May 21st, 2007, 09:51 PM I must say that Rio Bravo is my favorite Duke Western. Duke & Dino were great together, and forget about Nelson & Dickinson, they didn't detract from the movie. And Stumpy (Walter Brennen) was simply the best no contest. And I like Claud Aikens, Ward Bond, & Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez. This was a great cast! I'd trade James Cann for Ricky Nelson expcept for the singing. And how did Angie Dickinson get the lead woman? She was way too young for Duke. Any woman would have been better than Duke.
Getting the new Rio Bravo Two Disc DVD tomorrow.
Cheers
