View Full Version : Barbara Walters Interview With The Duke?
tahenytouchup May 19th, 2007, 10:48 AM Hi Everyone
Can anyone tell me if there is any copies of the Barbara Walters interview with the Duke out there? I was a bit to young to remember the interview and would love to see it again.
Did Walters ever put out a Best Of Collection?
Can anyone help?

The Ringo Kid May 21st, 2007, 05:39 PM Download is a dirty word on library computers. Thanks for the picture you posted though.
John Henry Thomas May 21st, 2007, 07:01 PM That was a great interview. I like how it ended.
Hondo Duke Lane May 21st, 2007, 09:28 PM Good to see the links including the interview with Barbara Walters. Love to have a copy of the whole interview.
Cheers
DakotaSurfer May 21st, 2007, 10:16 PM I watched the clip... I sure would like to see the whole interview. Sounds like me when he says about not caring what people think when he speaks out. I spoke at an Appeals Board meeting last Wednesday night and made front page news the next day, above the fold. If any of you know what that term means.
Lt. Brannigan May 21st, 2007, 10:27 PM bove the fold. If any of you know what that term means.
Ah yes I am quite familiar with that term.
Jay J. Foraker May 22nd, 2007, 11:48 AM Yeah! A lot of advertisers would request such a position during my years with the newspaper!
Cheers - Jay:beer:
DakotaSurfer May 22nd, 2007, 12:08 PM I'm talking front page... I've never seen ads on the front page above or below the fold, at least not in our newspaper. I'll just say, I got a lot of phone calls and email after that little bit. Darn reporter...
Speaking Barbara... did anyone see the story on Walter Cronkite the other nite? His 90th birthday. They even mentioned John Wayne.
Tbone May 22nd, 2007, 03:08 PM Good on ya Dakota! Give 'em hell.
Tbone May 22nd, 2007, 03:10 PM Thanks for the download Kevin!
chester7777 May 22nd, 2007, 11:59 PM . . . and made front page news the next day, above the fold. If any of you know what that term means.
I bet our good buddy Jay J Foraker knows . . . and I have a pretty good idea what it means myself (top of the page, above the fold line - BIG news!!) Way to go, DS!

ColeThornton September 14th, 2007, 11:22 AM Quite an interesting interview, I would like to see the whole thing sometime. John Wayne died five years before I was born but he is still on TV every week. It's a shame though, you could tell how ill he was that day.
Kevin September 14th, 2007, 04:53 PM Hey guys, have a look here [Only registered and activated users can see links] You'll find a better copy of the John Wayne interview portion of the Barbara Walters Legends special.
I created a John Wayne group over at SkyeCast.com
Kevin September 14th, 2007, 05:11 PM Senta, you should be able to view it at Skyecast.

ladybug September 15th, 2007, 04:43 AM Oh my gosh - I almost started crying while watching this interview clip. And, I would have loved to have been in the wings when it was over to inform Mr. Wayne that he was absolutely a very attractive 71 year young man! hubba hubba....thanks for the link.
ColeThornton September 15th, 2007, 05:03 AM Did he ever have any cosmetic surgery?

I watched a program once on one of the cable channels called hollywood knives. Pilar was on there and said that JW had surgery to remove his neck jowls.

Thanks to you both,
for making this gem available to us
DukePilgrim September 20th, 2007, 04:31 AM Hi Elly
Yes, I heard that John Wayne had some kind of cosmetic work done on his face. I think it might have been early 1970's. If you look at him in Rio Lobo he looks incredibly young for and man in his sixties.
Mike
William T Brooks September 20th, 2007, 06:45 AM Gt and Kevin,
Great Job on putting the interview up for all of us to see and hear Again !
That was Duke all the way, and the way He talked when He was not following a Script. He would always Pause and Think about what He way going to Say before He Said It !

The Ringo Kid September 20th, 2007, 05:30 PM Argh, I can't hear anything either. The libray is supposed to have headphones but this one im at does not. grrrr.
Thanks GT for getting this to Kevin for placing here though. I reckon one of these months, i'll get to here it here too ;-))
SXViper September 20th, 2007, 10:39 PM Thanks for the complete interview gt and Kevin. As much as I liked hearing this, I wish someone or myself could find the video to go along with it.

Mike
You're right Mike, he did look young for a man who was nearly 63 in Rio Lobo (although I did think he looked somewhat ill in that film).
Is it just me, or did Duke look younger in The War Wagon than he had in El Dorado?
William T Brooks September 21st, 2007, 05:48 AM In the late 1960s Duke had cosmetic work done around His Eyes to get rid of all the Lines that He was getting around His Eyes.
:glare:
Duke was Not At All Happy about the fact that He ended up with 2 Black Eyes, and Wore Big Dark Glasses for about 2 Weeks !
Duke was a People Person and Did Not like Hidding Out for those 2 Weeks !!!

chester7777 September 17th, 2008, 01:49 AM Wow! I really loved what he said about speaking his mind, and to h*** with the liberal media. I think it was funny that Barbara Walters thought he should keep things to himself because of how influential he might be. Look at all the Hollywierd stars nowadays who think they SHOULD speak out because of their 'influence.'
But sad to see him so thin, and know that shortly after this interview, he was gone . . . :cry2:.
Mrs. C :angel1:
ShortGrub September 17th, 2008, 03:01 AM I love it when Duke says; "I am me, just me." When he takes a pot shot at Walters saying God is a She, for Duke always said He when he ever mentioned any reference to God.
But sad to see him so thin, and know that shortly after this interview, he was gone . . . :cry2:.
Mrs. C :angel1: I agree Mrs. C.
He knew his people, the middle class, the hard workers all loved him then and still now.
SXViper September 17th, 2008, 12:01 PM Nice...
Was that the "complete" interview or the same one that has been around that is only part of the interview.
Jay J. Foraker September 17th, 2008, 12:05 PM ej - Thank you so much for posting that! Just reaffirms to me why so many people loved John Wayne and still do!

It's not the complete interview. But if you go here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), and scroll down a little, you can click on the Barbara Walters interview. It is still not the complete one, but there are definitely some parts that are different - just a little overlap. Worth watching/listening to.

I asked that question a couple years ago. Seems no one really knows. I went as far as searching ABC's website and sent them a email. I never received a response back from them and have since changed my email address. If anyone comes up with the full interview I would love to see it.
ShortGrub September 19th, 2008, 01:00 AM The interview is on Barbara Walters Special site but not were you can download it. I need to trick the website to 'want' to let me have it. Hopefully I can get the one from 10 Jan. 1979, at least that is the one there. Duke, Jane Fonda and someone else were interviewed.

Thanks

ShortGrub September 28th, 2008, 06:52 PM The site is the Barbara Walter Special on ABC, the search squirrel finds the file or video in this case. Usually a website has a portal open, but no matter what I try I can't get to it. The file directory if search able usually can be linked too.
Brian Mc September 29th, 2008, 09:14 PM The third person interviewed on the January 10 1979 show was Carroll O'Connor.
I am also proud to say that I was the person who had this actual show listed on the Internet Movie Database--I was flabbergasted that ABC (or anyone else for that matter) had not included this landmark episode of this series as it was Duke's final interview.
His very last appearance was at the Oscars that year, but his last new credit was released the following year, 1980--an new interview done for the Kevin Brownlow mini-series "Hollywood" was the Duke's true last credit, in which he speaks of working in the last days of the silent era.
It is a terrific series--one can still buy it on vhs, but I reckon it will never be released on dvd as due to rights clearances to films and music used in the series (it would now probably cost millions to pay off the rights holders these days, certainly not back in 1980) and as it is such a great series, I'm glad this was the Duke's last credit as it was most fitting.
chester7777 October 1st, 2008, 02:26 AM Brian,
Can you give a little more information about buying the Hollywood mini-series on VHS? I had trouble finding it, but you certainly make it sound worth having.
GOOD job, to get it listed on IMDb among Duke's credits!

Brian Mc February 1st, 2009, 05:17 PM Hello Chester--my apologies for the delay in my reply to your request (6 months!?)
The entire series came out on HBO Home Video as a 13 volume vhs set--I just checked Amazon and this set is now very expensive.
I know the entire series was about to be released on dvd around 2003 when plans to release it were dropped very suddenly--when someone asked Kevin Brownlow who made the documentary what happened, it seems that everyone who had clips in the series now wanted to be paid for them.
I remember Duke spoke about his early days in Hollywood and gave a heartfelt tribute to the work of one of his idols, Harry Carey--he spoke of how he got to know Harry and Olive (she was also interviewed for the show) and how he made an indirect tribute to Harry in the final scene from "The Searchers" (which was included in the show....and most likely, Warners would like some reembursement if this show with this scene ever appears again!)
chester7777 February 1st, 2009, 08:22 PM Hello Chester--my apologies for the delay in my reply to your request (6 months!?)
Hey, Brian, no worries! I have had the same thing happen to me before!
Thanks for following up, and letting me know what's up with this.
I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open.
