hi,
I don't know If you know Two Mules for Sister Sarah It is an movie from Director Don Siegel and with Clint Eastwood.

But I read that the story is from writer Budd Boeticher that prefered John Wayne and Silvia Pinal in the leading roles.
I know the movie and It is very funny but I think that John Wayne and Silvia Pinal could do It better

maybe some of you know more of this
already thanks

Great to see you back JWfan,

I heard that Duke was offered the lead role for that movie, but turned it down because of another shoot (can't remember the movie, but I think it was about the time of the cancer, and Sons of Katie Elder).

;)
Great observation! I think Duke made the right choice if it is what I think. Eastwood did alright, and he credited his stardom to Duke's turning down parts (ha-ha-ha).

Cheers, Hondo B)

P.S. Don't be so long in responding big guy. You were asked about a few times. Talk to you soon.

Clint Eastwood can and does thank JW for turning down movies another one was Dirty Harry and i guess George C Scott can thank him as well for knocking back Patton (not that it was that big at the flics)but he didnt want to do it because he would be seen hitting an american soldier.

I think the Duke did right buy turning down "Two Mules for Sister Sarah" I believe if the Duke took the role alot of the movie would have changed

Didn't the Duke fight Forrest Tucker in the "Sands of Iwo Jima" I believe he was a fellow Marine

Chris,

I can think of many movies where John Wayne was in the position of hitting an American soldier, and did so. I can hardly imagine that would be a reason for him turning down a role. Two I can think of off the top of my head are Wings of Eagles and Flying Tigers.

Chester

P.S. Robbie, As a Navy veteran, I can vouch for the fact that Marines hitting each other in the head was normal operating procedure. ;)

hi Hondo,
I think he was not bussy with The Sons of Katie Elder, because Two mules for sister sarah was made in 1970 so I think The Duke was bussy with Rio lobo or Chisum I think (I'm not sure about that).

I didn't responding the last time because I was on holiday in the ardennes, in Bastogne, I think you know the place from the movie 'Patton'.

But now I am back and I hope to enjoin the topics and polls again

Yes your right guys but that was the reason given in the documenary THE DUKE id have to watch it again to get the exact statement but its interesting to note they wanted JW to play and make these movies that others made famous.

Watch the video again the statement goes like this ...The duk turned down more movies in the mid 50's than he made he turned down Dirty Harry because of the bad language ...Dirty Dozen because he didnt like the way the US military was portrade and turned down Paton because the caricter wold be seen SLAPPING an American Soldier ... that makes a differance,it then talks about his political beliefs and then some thing interesting on his visit to veitnam in 1956 some one took a shot at the duke and missed him by 50 feet, thanks guys for that correcting my statement.

Chester,
As a former Marine I remember hitting many SQUIDS. Then again a few Marine's.

After watching Clint play the role in "Two Mules for Sister Sara" over the last few years, I cannot picture John Wayne doing the part.

I cannot picture John Wayne having the pompous attitude that George C. Scott played on the screen. That pompous attitude was excellent in selling George C. Scott. :D

George C. Scott did an outstanding job as Patton, I just cannot place John Wayne in that role.

JWfan,

I haven't read anyplace where Duke was asked to star in Patton. He was pretty old to play the general, at the time. My bio books don't show that he was offered the part or to test for the part.

Yo Hondo

Apparantly this story is true, but where I read it the reason why Duke turned down this role and that of the "Dirty dozen" was because he wanted to make a movie to show support for the American troops serving in Vietnam and that movie became know as the "Green Berets".

Thanks Chester and BrianB for that information about striking troops, I never knew about it before.
