View Full Version : The Wild Bunch
JWfan July 23rd, 2003, 03:14 AM hi all,
The Wild Bunch is an great western with William Holden, Ernest Borgnide, Robert Ryan, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates and from directer Sam Peckinaph but I always think John Wayne could play the part of William Holden, who thinks I am right with this?
It's maybe an silly question
already thanks

itdo July 23rd, 2003, 06:04 AM that's not a silly question but it's quite sure JW wouldn't have accepted the part. I think it was in his infamous Playboy interview that he stated he didn't care much for all that blood'n gore that was put on the screen lately, beginning with the Wild Bunch.
Interesting enough, the same critics that praised the Wild Bunch slaughtered JW for the brutality in Big Jake in which he "betrayed his usual family audience".

Mrs. Chester here . . .
It's interesting you should share that, regarding his desire to avoid blood and gore. Big Jake is so graphic (for JW's movies, anyway) that I won't let my 7 year old watch it. I remember being quite stunned by the gori-ness of that picture myself, it seemed out of character, compared to all the other John Wayne movies I had seen.

itdo July 23rd, 2003, 11:11 AM JW really got upset when he got on the set one day and they had Harry Carey all prepared to get "shot", many of those blood pouches ready to get triggered - it so happens they put too much stuff of that on him and in the first take it must have looked like he was blown apart (would LOVE to see THAT outtake!), and JW really was disgusted.
Monique July 23rd, 2003, 11:27 AM Hello
I enjoyed "The Wild Bunch" B) I think it is really done well, but yes it is gory  I think William Holden did a great job :o I can't picture the Duke playing that part  Ican as far as defending one's friends, but not walking into an ending like that, he would of had a better plan
"The Wild Bunch" is in a class by it's self, and should be left that way
my thoughts
Monique ;)

Robbie July 24th, 2003, 06:35 PM I have never been a big fan of the wild bunch I think its a little overrated, I wouldnt like to see Duke in the lead role of this movie because Holdens character seems to have no morals at all and is very unlikeable. I dont think Duke would have wanted to play the lead part either as the character is too flawed.
Although Duke didnt like High Noon he should have played the lead role in that moive. I am a little confused as to why he didnt like the movie as most of the characters in the shootist are low-lifes just as the ones in High Noon.

itdo July 25th, 2003, 04:33 AM And if you're still looking for a link between John Wayne and that Wild Bunch, here it is:
It's the very same locomotive which was used in Wild Bunch as well as in Sons of Katie Elder, Cahill, Train Robbers (quite prominently, as Duke was driving her himself), Big Jake, and Rio Lobo.
Jay J. Foraker May 17th, 2005, 12:13 PM Another past subject brought to the front -
I'm not greatly overwhelmed by "The Wild Bunch" though I think it was a good movie. The slow motion gore was over the top, I think. It brought about a lot of slow motion scenes in TV series episodes in the '70s after there was a hue and cry about too much violence on TV. But the slow motion seemed to focus on the violence even more, although this seemed to molify the violence critics for a while.
As for JW playing the William Holden character, I don't think it would have jelled with Duke's fans, and therefore he wouldn't have taken the part if offered.
Cheers - Jay :D
The Ringo Kid May 17th, 2005, 01:39 PM I liked The Wild bunch but could not picture The Duke playing William Holdens character. That is as hard to imagine as The Duke playing Dirty Harry instead of Clint Eastwood--not that i'm saying he could not have pulled it off. :D
Emmanuel May 19th, 2005, 10:04 AM Hi All
I liked THE WILD BUNCH, But I don't think Duke would have involved himself in a movie which showed so much violence.

I think the reason Duke didn't like the part is because the sheriff is afraid and try’s to get the towns people to help him in the fight and you can tell he’s thinking of running, but in the end he stands and fights. That’s something that a JW character would never do, he would stand his ground no matter what the odds where and if he was afraid he wouldn’t show it. He would also more than likely turn down any help the town folk had to offer. Well that’s my two cents on that…
BTW ... Gary Cooper did an outstanding job in that role… I love that movie.
