Someone mentioned the JW Lives button on eBay. I'll put an image of it up once I get it. There have been some other buttons on eBay lately. One rather large one that was made shortly after his passing.

Nice amount of buttons out there. I remember that largest botton in the first photo. I remember seeing those for sale at one of our local chain convience stores called: Stop-n-Shop (Stop-n-Rob, more like it) anyway, these were sold there for I think the tidy sum of about $1-$1.50? can't remember. I remember wanting to buy one, but I opted to buy three comic books instead. :glare:

I also remember that when I was in the 6th grade, there was a guy named Leo-whose father was the manager at our local Cine 1&2 Theaters, and they had a button-making machine that they used to churn out movie and star related buttons. I also remember Leo going around school taking orders - having them made and then selling them for a buck each. I had a few-non JW but remember I wanted some made-paid for and I am still owed my Duke buttons. :glare:

One of the disappointing elements about being a fan of John Wayne is the very poor selection of pin badges available.

Most if not all that turn up on ebay are anywhere else are home made button badges. These are fine as long as you leave them in a dark dry drawer but if they get any sunlight or moisture on them at all they have more reaction than Dracula does to the sun.

The official releases are non existant apart from recent JW Birth Place badge.

The selection below seem to be the best on offer.

The top left is silver enamel from France, top right is pin badge made using image from US Stamp. Bottom left is Mc Donald's tie in. There is a couple of series of these with slight colour variations. Best place to get it is McFreds either directly or via ebay.

Bottom right is a tie in badge with Coors. Ebay is full of these badges

In this next selection

Big badge at the top is large enamel badge which usually comes with 8-9 other button badges.

I think the ebayer was called devotedreader. He is reliable but his shipping is dear.

Next is another Coors tie in badge, Bottom left is another enamel badge from France
The other badges are John Wayne Lives and John Wayne Birthplace badges.

The majority of the next photo I got from a collector in France who told me that he had them made in 1970s. They are metal laminated and have not faded so are obviously pre computer. The final badge is an original Hellfighters Promo badge which I got for £1.00. Makes me feel good when I see a rusty one being offered on ebay for $45.00

Interesting badge on ebay at the moment of John Wayne linked to the airport with his name but at $40.00 shipping I think I will wait for a cheap one to turn up!!!

Looks at bit like an angry John Wayne in German. Any idea of its history?

Doesnt appeal to me but I am sure someone will find a home for it

I don't know exactly what this is but, it resembles a type of "Shooters Badge" that one would get as a prize during some sort of Shooters Contest. As these are not massed produced, there will be thousands of differing designs (not speaking for this badge in particular, but speaking about the shooting badges, in general.)

So mike this is what you are into!! Buttons.

I only have 3 the true grit tie in ones that are authentic. But I do have a marshalls star (a prop)

I keep them all in a box with cotton wool Is this a good idea?

My friend is a poster and book collector and he advised me how to store these kinds of items but I never knew anyone before who could help me with the buttons.

Thanks

Elly

PS I agree with you the german one on ebay is a bit gruesome!!

Hi Elly, just make sure the box is either wooden or made from acid-free cardboard. Otherwise, they will still tarnish over a period of time. As I collect military medals and badges, I have all of mine stored in Mylar plastic sleeves.

I'll tell you why Duke's angry. They got his birth year wrong! It has 1908 - 1979. Duke was born in 1907, wasn't he? Hey..that might make the pin a "mistake" collectible. Could be valuable someday.

Hi dukefan1

I didnt notice that date discrepancy. Still dont like it!!.

In regard to badges well made enamel ones as long as they are stored in a dry place will be fine.

The mass produced home made jobs that ebay are littered with will all fade in the sun and to be honest are not worth buying.

Personally, I don't think it even looks like John Wayne! But to each his own.

Here's another interesting thing - there's a guy in Germany, selling the brass Red River D belt buckle who (1) has the wrong date (1948) on the buckle and (2) is knocking other sellers on ebay

You better buy from a german dealer and you got a real well made german quality buckle and not a cheap made wall mart buckle, like an american dealer is selling on ebay. This guy must be going for the European buyers.

Off to order more mylar sleeves!

Hi Elly, Mylar is the best way to go. I use it for all my magazines, comicbooks, paperback books, photographs, lobby cards, autographed photos, collectable postcards, metal militaria and stamps. Iv'e never had a problem in all the years I have used Mylar products.
