I was watching "The War Wagon" recently great movie slick and well directed the Duke does a great job.

I noticed a scene that was quite funny due to something Roland mentioned a few months ago. When they are implementing the hiest at the end we see Howard Keel chopping down a tree and the Duke ride up to him at a distance. Keel waves and the Duke waves back, however it isnt the Duke, its a stand in and as he in rides on Keel watches him and is laughing, I always wondered what he was laughing at now I know.

Hope you find this interesting of course I could be wrong so check it out for yourselves.

Cheers

The War Wagon is great movie that is well done. The part I like best about the movie is the great chemistry between Kirk Douglas and John Wayne. They played off each other well and made the movie a classic.

Big Jim,

You're right, the interaction between the Duke and Kirk Douglas is something else.

I got a good laugh out of the scene where they shoot two guys who are getting ready to shoot JW's character (one of them is Bruce Dern - heh heh heh :P ), and Kirk says something like, "Mine hit the ground first," to which the Duke replies, "Yeah, but mine was taller." (I don't own it yet, so I can't pull it out and find the exact exchange - sorry).

Another thing I really enjoyed is the way Kirk Douglas jumped into the saddle many times (an "artistic" leap from the ground, over the back end of the horse, obviously staged), and how he fell flat on his face at the end of the movie (again, obviously staged).

They did have great chemistry (Duke & Kirk Douglas). They were rivals, and that means on and off screen. They were good firends, and it's sad that Kirk had the stroke several years ago, but great that he keeps on keeping on. That man is determined to beat the old age syndrome. I've heard that he continues to work out everyday and walks/runs at least 5 miles a day.

Here is something for Kirk that was honored by the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

Celebrity News: 17th April 2001

Kirk Douglas Honored By John Wayne

Actor Kirk Douglas has been honored by a fellow Hollywood legend - in the form of an award given by the John Wayne Cancer Institute. The Spartacus star, 84, will receive the 2001 Duke Award at a prestigious bash at the 16th annual Odyssey Ball at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on April 28th. He says of Wayne who died on in 1979, "We got along well. I had a good relationship with Wayne. I liked him. He was really quite a guy. We were happy to participate in the John Wayne Cancer Institute Event which benefits a very important cause." The veteran actor is pleased with the honor, but does not want it to be classed as a lifetime achievement award. "I try to avoid lifetime achievement awards, because it seems to indicate that you might be dead the next day. What lifetime? I just got started."

Cheers, Hondo B)

You are right Hondo, Kirk and Duke were friends in real life I remember an interview in which Kirk was talking about the War Wagon and on the set Duke critised Kirk for one of his earlier movies "lust for life".

Duke said in Kirks own words "You played a quear in that movie you should remember that we have to play the tough guys in the movies".

Kirk then went on to say that he liked the Duke.
