I have been a fan of John Wayne for a great number of years and proud of it. One of my son's middle name is Ethan, taken from his greatest film 'The Searchers' (I'm sure you are all aware of the film!!! - Perhaps however disagreeing on my label of 'his greatest') Enough of the niff-naff and trivia, now back to the main question. I'm keen to purchase some sort of item from the film but am unsure of where to look. Some web sites i have visited claim to have certain items that had either belonged to Duke or was used by him in certain locations/films. As i am after authentic items i do not trust everything i see - i'm sure you understand. It would be appreciated if you could assist in this quest of mine, as so far, i have found nothing of great interest.

Many thanks

badger,

First of all, I moved this thread to General Discussions. Not sure why it was in the Trading Post (since no one is looking to trade or sell anything), so thought it might get a little more exposure here.

To answer your question, I've found some really neat things on ebay. If you haven't done business on ebay, you might want to read Ebay What Do You Think (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=937), a conversation we had quite a while back about the ups and downs, and some advice about, shopping on ebay.

You will be amazed at how many John Wayne related things you can find on ebay!

Hi

If you are interested in posters lobby cards etc, go to the movie fairs which are held about three times a year. Two good ones are at Camden and Queen Elizabeth Hall Westminster.

If thats too far away from you they are also held in Manchester and possibly Birmingham, although as that is too far away from me I don't know too much about those, I should think that they are much of a muchness.

Another good place for collecting movie memoribilla is at postcard fairs, some years ago the old Picturegoer magazine did a series of postcards featuring film stars, these are now quite collectable but are not expensive (yet) often as little as a couple of quid. You can also find things like this in junk shops(or as the trade call them antique shops). I have used these cards on our site to show what the character looked like. The quality is very good

If you want to find out the dates of film fairs have a look in the Empire film magazine the usually have the dates in the back.

One thing I would advise is a lot of Belgian film poster are appearing they are very expensive and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, but that again is my personal choice.

Hope this helps

Regards

Arthur

Lots of reproduction stuff out there when it comes to posters and lobby cards. I bought some "Chisum" lobby cards from a friend who thought they were the real deal. He wasn't happy when I showed him what real vintage cards look like. These are usually moderately priced and good quality. If you just want "STUFF" thats a way to do it on a budget. If you want the real thing read the fine print carefully(like 50 times) and be prepared to open your wallet. The original 41"X27" Tri-Fold movie posters are my favorites. The pin holes and stains are a part of the patina. My problem is that I have run out of space to hang them in The Man Cave.

Just "stuff" i m looking for - doesn t have to be the real thing as that would be too expensive. Just seems to be a dearth of John Wayne stuff out there at the minute.

Sarah,
besides the usual places ebay etc.
Also take a look at
The John Wayne Birthplace Shop (http://www.johnwaynebirthplace.org/shop.html)
There's plenty of 'stuff' there.

In my eBay Store I'm offering a lot of rare Wayne photos, mostly doubles from my collection. Vintage stills & LC's & reproductions of rare candid stills that are very hard to get as originals. Some are unpublished enlargements from vintage contact sheets.

My eBay name is JUNIORMIKE, the store is called EL DORADO PRODUCTIONS

No need to buy through eBay if anybody is interested in some items - outside of eBay I can make a better price. (No fees).

Here's a link to my eBay store, 222 Wayne items listed so far :)

There is also a "Cast & Crew" coffee mug from the Searchers on E-Bay. It has a Buy-It-Now price of $3,750.00 + $4.00 shipping. For that price I think I would throw in the shipping for free. It has been on E-bay for at least 2 months. I wonder "WHY"???

I love the cast and crew mugs, but can never get myself to drop the kind of cash they ask for them. Maybe if I hit the lotto, but untill then, I just wait and dream. lol

I hope this is the right place to post this. My husband got a mailing today about a collector's item rifle, The John Wayne Tribute Rifle, from a company called America Remembers. The literature included a beautiful fold-out brochure with gorgeous photos of the rifle. Here is the link to the website in case anyone in interested in collecting this kind of memorabilia:

Just wanted y'all to know that Walmart is selling 2011 wall calendars with pretty good Jan-Dec pictures of the Duke for about five bucks, which is a rare bargain, IMO.

Some guy beside me said when I picked my copy up "Can't go wrong with a John Wayne calendar". To which I replied "you got that right".

(I know, I know, that's incorrect English but that's the way we old Southern boys talk.)

Stumpy,

Just curious if this year's JW calendar recognizes December 7th as Pearl Harbor Day? I kind of recall that last year's calendar, in addition to missing that one, recognized some Muslim holiday.

I went through each month on the 2011 JW calendar and yes, it does commemorate Pearl Harbor Day and holidays from numerous other countries but I found no evidence of a Muslim holiday. But knowing the politically-correct crowd, it's probably just a matter of time.

It's kinda funny, Jim - I (and probably millions of other Americans) detest Muslims because of the hostile actions of their fanatics toward us (and other members of the Western nations) and yet my youngest son has a Muslim neighbor who's one of the nicest people imaginable. His two sons are my grandson's favorite playmates and their family even exchanged Christmas gifts with my son's family. So, guess not all of 'em belong to al Qaeda.

My apologies . . . I realize our little side conversation is (ot), but I do want to say that I know that not all Muslims are a threat to us, and are just as dismayed by Muslim terrorist activity. We need to be careful to not 'paint with too broad a brush.' It's a fine line to tread.

To get this back on topic , I'm glad to hear about the holidays on the calendar. I'm guessing the calendar publisher got a bunch of flack after last year's calendar, which did NOT acknowledge Pearl Harbor Day at all, and which DID observe at least one Muslim holiday (possibly even on Dec. 7, which may be why it was even more glaring, but I don't remember that exact point, and don't want to dig out the old calendar, which I didn't even hang because of the holiday debacle).
