Hi,

If they ever made, a BiogPic, about Duke,
although no one could ever measure up
to the big man,
WHO would you choose to star as Duke?
both as young Duke, and older Duke?

Likewise, who would you have play, say, John Ford,
Ward Bond, Maureen O'Hara, and other co-stars.

Hm-m-m-m-m . . . got to think on this one a little.

Off the top of my head, I think Nicole Kidman might be able to pull of the role of Maureen O'Hara. Tom Selleck could possibly be an older Duke, but I'm not sure who would play him at a young adult age (although I have to say my oldest son does kind of look like Duke back in the thirties). If acting experience is not necessary, maybe he could play young JW and I could play older JW :fear2:.

I think Russell Crowe as John Ford . . .

Ward Bond . . . can't think of anybody yet.

Who would play his wives? Who could take the role of Pat Stacy? And his children played into his career in the later years, when they were adults.

Speaking of which . . . maybe Patrick Wayne could play Duke in his later years (although I think he might now be older than JW was when he died).

GREAT topic, Keith!

Why not use his son's to portray him. You could use Ethan as a young and middle aged Duke and Patrick as the older Duke. They both have acting experience and who else has better first hand knowledge?

As far as the women, there could be lots of them who could portray his wives. And Maureen O'Hara could be played by Nicole Kidman, she has the red hair for it and the acting talent.

I will have to think on the others.

Is Russell Crowe's name coming up because of the 3:10 to Yuma remake? Perhaps not...my wife suggested Crowe and she doesn't really follow new movies.

Personally, I think Viggo Mortensen has better western skills than Crowe and could pull off a young-to-middle-age Wayne better. Crowe is a bit too dark and unlikeable, I think. Too much of a mean streak. Viggo, on the other hand, can be tough as nails but much more sympathetic and warm. He can be much more of a Wayne-style husband/father figure who is tough but you can tell feels deeply for his wife and kids. But maybe I just don't like Russell Crowe...

I do like Kidman as O'Hara, though...I'm not anti-Aussie.

He probably wouldn't take the part since he's not much of a sidekick kind of guy, but let's make Clive Owen Ward Bond. And then Ed Harris as John Ford.

Just a few ideas...

When I originally looked at the thread I couldnt think of a single actor who could do it.

I see Ethan and Patrick have been mentioned as playing JW which I suppose would be passable. What about Brendan Frazer?

Nicole Kidman as Maureen O Hara:ohmy: Come on she would have to eat like food, develop breasts I suppose she can act just she has Demi Moore syndrome in that she falls out of her clothes in virtually every movie which Maureen to my knowledge didnt do and there is the small problem of she aint Irish.

John Goodman comes to mind as Ward Bond

John Ford now there would be a acting role that would be a challenge. I think some character actor could make it an Academy winning role.

Good question. As far as Ward Bond, what about Sam Elliott?

There are several actor's that I love, Tom Selleck, is at the top of my list, still, the thought of someone trying to be Duke bother's me. That's like sacred ground in my heart.:broken_heart:

I imagine most actor's would be concerned if they could pull it off without being eaten alive by fans and critics....

What an interesting question,,, In my eye's there isn't anyone I could see doing it. Would anyone in hollywood dare do it?

Crowe's "unlike-ability" is maybe why I thought he might be a good John Ford. From all I've read, he (Ford) was a brilliant director but had a mean streak a mile wide. Crowe seems to be a very versatile actor, having played in an interesting variety of roles, including the one in 3:10 to Yuma.

John Goodman - I picture him more as Victor MacLaglen.

I mentioned Nicole Kidman because of her feisty personality.

I tend to agree with Kevin. I cant really think of anyone who could do the job. It would be very risky to even try. It is definately an interesting thought though.

I could see our very own ChiliBill as playing the Duke but a younger 1930's Duke. I could see Cindyrella as Maureen O'Hara, Jay J. Foraker as Ward Bond and Todd as Red Buttons.

I have not seen pictures of other folks here to know who could do what? and why do we need hollywood actors when we have these good people? :-D

But Todd, didn't you mention at one time or another that your nickname was: Dobe or Brick or something of that nature?

Cindy, then it's high time that Maureen dyes her hair Blonde  I think you could easily be her.

PS, you all have to remember that if hollywood has it's hands in somehting like this, that anything could happen. Take the scientist from the TV series: The Time Tunnel: Doug Phillips and Anthony Newman. The original two were men, on ewith black hair-the other with brown. In the unaired pilot to a Time Tunnel series revival, Doug Phillips had brown hair and Anthony Newman - (shortened to Tony) was now a blond-haired woman.

Carl - do you think I'd be a good Ward Bond? - Hmm, well I am certainly not as bawdy or fiesty as he was reputed to be.
I'm sorry - Nicole Kidman as Maureen? She may have the acting chops to pull it off, but she just isn't voluptuous enough. I'm afraid I find the idea laughable.
I still don't feel anyone could do justice to Duke's character. He was too unique a personality to be duplicated.

Hi everyone

what an interesting topic you have going here! I saw it a few days ago and like many others have racked my brains but keep coming to the conclusion that no actor could fill JW boots.

So then I thought why cant JW play himself? After all with CGI and all the other technology now available............

And of course if JW can play JW then the same goes for Maureen O'Hara, Ward Bond, John Ford, Harry Carey etc.

Now all that leaves is finding a Director capable of doing this film justice

Hi Jay, heck yes that I do think you'd make a great Ward Bond--not that im saying you are as fiesty as he was but if I recall the photo of you posted in that article/link you posted-i'd see no problems with you as [Bond] and would fit perfectly in some of his best roles.

Todd, come to think of it, I CAN see you as James Arness.

How about Kate Winslet or Cate Blanchett as Maureen O'hara?

I think Winslet would be pretty decent.

I think Russell Crowe certainly has the talent to play Duke in a biopic. I don't think Mel Gibson will act in front of the camera again, in any case the height difference would probably be too obvious.

Ermal definitely has down Duke's mannerisms to a T. But you could not use him for any close-ups, as at close range he doesn't look that much like John Wayne. As an impersonator, he does a very good job. I speak from having seen him do an excellent stage presentation, but also knowing him personally and having seen him face to face.

I think it was within the first year or two that some article was written in< I think TV guide, that a certain actor was suggested to play the role of John Wayne in a TV biopic, but for the life of me I can't think of his name anymore. I'd know it if I saw it, but I can't find any reference to a full list of actors from that era. In any case, the idea must have fallen thru. Patrick Wayne might have squelched that.

I still stand behind my original choices. However, if they refuse to do it? then my choices COULD be" Keith as Maureen, Mel Gibson as an older Duke, and for Ward--probablt Liam Neesen.

I know shortly after Duke's death, actor Ken Howard was offered the part in a TV bio movie but turned it down. Patrick was then mentioned, but the TV film never materialized.
