Bob Hope:
1903-2003
Bob Hope,
beloved
comedian,
actor, emcee,
ambassador,
and emissary,
passed away last night (7/27) at his
home in Toluca Lake. He had
turned 100 on May 29th. Hope
starred in over 60 movies and his
success spanned vaudeville, radio,
television, and the big screen.
Hope, along with Bing Crosby and
Dorothy Lamour, starred in the
popular "Road to.." movies as well
as headlining such films as The
Seven Little Foys, The Paleface,
and The Great Lover. On the
small screen during the '60s and
'70s, Hope's Christmas and
comedy specials were a treasured
staple, expanding on the formula of
girls and gags from his U.S.O.
tours. It's for these tours,
particularly during World War II,
the Korean war, and Vietnam war,
that Hope endeared himself to
U.S. servicemen and for which, in
1997, Hope was awarded the
status of "Honorary Veteran" by
the U.S. Congress. No other
civilian holds the honor.
Thanks for the memories Bob.

Hi everyone,

Now here is an old thread to bring up,
Bob Hope only made one film involving Duke,
in a cameo role.
CANCEL MY RESERVATION.

Is this film available in the States?
If so please LET US KNOW.

Best Wishes

Emmanuel

I have never seen that movie, so I
look forward to hearing if we can get
our hands on it.

Emmanuel.

Hi Emmanuel,
I once saw it on TV, many years ago.
If I remember Bob Hope was in a jail cell,
he imagines he's going to be hanged!
and says something like,'Where's John Wayne, when you need him?'

Duke, appears as a cameo, and his only line in the film, is his reply,

'I'd like to help ya,but it's not my picture'

As far as I know it's never been released over in the UK.

Hondo,

You are quite right about that. I hope my original post didn't imply that. I just meant that it was available for owning and viewing, at a reasonable price. I wonder if it will ever be released on DVD. Eventually . . . ?

Having never seen this movie, I don't think there is a push to get this out (on DVD). I heard it was not a great movie. But again not seeing this movie, I don't much about it.

I would only be interested in the John Wayne cameo. Kinda like him in How the West was Won or The Greatest Story Ever Told. Incidentally, I do have those movies on DVD.

Cheers B)

Here is another young man that you might enjoy hearing. He has been to the Balkans, Afghanistan and most recently Iraq. He wrote a special song for the American Vets. Like Bob Hope he is devoted to our servicemen and women.

Below is a hot link to his site, go to the Juke Box and then click on Spirit of the Free. Its not the whole song but it will give you an idea about it.

Michael Chain is the artist. A true American Patriot. He is a personal friend and his song Spirit of the Free is the Theme song for my show.

Please give a listen and let me know what you think.

Hi Hondo

Cancel My Reservation was the film that virtually ended Bob Hope's film career. It was so badly received by the critics he decided to call it a day.

It was freely available on Amazon or was some months ago. I was keen to get a copy as at the time it was the only gap in my collection dating from 1939 through. I eventually managed to get a reasonably watchable VHS copy from the states. As far as I know it has never been released in UK and I doubt if the film has ever been aired on British television.

As for the film itself the plot is poor, the acting is reasonable although it is sad to see Forrest Tucker in the film. If you think of his performance in Chisum this is more F Troop. He appears as a big lumbering hulk out of place and uncomfortable.

Ralph Bellamy is reasonable and Ann Archer watchable. Bob Hope is just the Bob Hope of inumerable pictures. I think the cameos of John Wayne and Bing Crosby, were just gimmicks put in to distract the plot.

Regards

Arthur

Hi Arthur,
You won't believe this,
but I remember seeing this film on TV,
many,many years ago,
I remember seeing Duke standing in the cell!!
At the time, I didn't take too much notice,
so It must have been, even before, I became
a big, big fan,
Now that must have been a LONG time ago!!
Likewise.after, obtaining the equally,
dreadful' I MARRIED A WOMAN'
the Bob Hope film, also remains the only gap,
in my collection!

Thanks Smokey

I have always thought of Down Under being our closest friend in the world. Your country has done so much to support the free world.

When this song was written Michael Chain went to Washington DC and he was asked to play it for the Gold Star Mothers Convention (those that lost a son in battle), he said it was the hardest song that he ever sang because of the emotion in the room. By the time it was over, all of the Gold Star Mothers were in tears and the band was in tears. He has dedicated this song to all of the service people and all of the proceeds of its sales goes to veterans organizations. He also sings country western and he does a fantastic job. He lives in the San Fernando Valley (Calif) where the old Corriganville used to be. For those that have never heard of Corriganville it is one of the main locations where B westerns were shot.

If you would like a full version of the song let me know. He gave me permission to make copies of the song as I would like. I will send you a copy if you send me your address. It has been my theme song for almost two years and it is quite emotional. In fact I will send one of my radio shows with the song at the end if you would like. They are on cassette tape. Let me know.
