View Full Version : "The Longest Day"?

I have a question and hope that someone can answer me.
My uncle was in one of John Wayne's movies and I think that it was "The Longest Day." It was the part of a taxi cab driver. I saw it once years and years ago but I'm just not sure which one it was. Whenever it was playing on TV, I would watch it but never saw that part. They either cut it out or it's the wrong movie. They used my uncle because he was a short, kind of fat Jewish man and they couldn't find anyone for that part at the time. I'm not even sure where the scene was shot. John Wayne didn't even have a large part in the movie I don't think. I don't have any of his movies yet. His name was George Coleman and I'm sure that he would have been in the credits. When they show his movies on TV anymore, they don't go through the credits but on the videos that you can buy, he should be under Transportation Coordinator. If anyone should watch this movie and see a Jewish man, kind of fat with a mustache, would you let me know. I have tried for a long time to find that scene. I just need to buy that video and watch it myself. Thanks!

Marcy,

While reading your letter, my wife and I thought a likely movie would be "Cast A Giant Shadow," which takes place in Israel.

In any case, the best source for that kind of information is the website Internet Movie Data Base, at www.imdb.com. I went there, typed in your uncle's name, George Coleman, in the search and he turned up as George Coleman II, and we clicked on that one, and he is listed as transportation coordinator for five movies, and production manager for The Alamo.

We couldn't find him listed as even an uncredited part in any of those movies, or any others either. IMDb offers a fairly complete list of cast, included those who were in deleted scenes or were on screen but uncredited.

IMDb offers an advanced search where you can put in two names and see if the two people worked together on any movies. When we did that, it came up with the same six movies.

It was fun reading about someone about whom we had heard.

Hi! Thanks for looking. I do remember seeing him in one of those movies, I'm just not sure. And I don't have anyone to ask now since both my aunt and uncle are gone. I'm not even sure if it was John Wayne that he was having to drive the taxi for. He was loned out for the "The Greatest STory Ever Told" and that's about the time that I was living with them. He was driving a studio car with the name of the movie being advertised. He had a temper and if somebody got in his way, he was hot! Like, he's the one that invented rage behind the wheel I think. I need to start buying some of John Wayne movies, I just haven't done it yet. My uncle worked for Wayne since way back in the 40's so he was a part of most of them all. When my aunt died, I was left all of her possessions so I did get most of everything. There was another family member that took a lot without my knowing. There was a mug for every John Wayne movie made and she got them all. At the time, I didn't care but now I wished that I had of kept them.
Thank you again!

Yeah, having your own set of movies is great! At this point, buying DVDs is the best bet, although the VHS format is much cheaper, and some of the older movies have been colorized on VHS but not on DVD. If you click on Amazon.com from this site, I believe this site receives a small commission (a few pennies, probably) for any sales generated.

Boy, those coffee mugs would truly be neat. I'd be trying to get back in touch with that relative and doing some sweet talking. Just remember me when you get them back. Ha ha! Just kidding (sort of . . . )

Yep, if she got the mugs she probably got the best of it. The "Holy Grail" they are referred to by the fans, and they sell for a pretty penny these days. See if you can get some back from here - or at least make sure she takes good care of these priced items.
