Not much more to add from what you guys already stated.

I will say this though:

What you saw is what you got, no BS, just a straight shooter all the time.

And here is the true reason SO MANY people know and love John Wayne -

it's because all the cable companies have been running his movies 24/7, because (1) they realize folks will watch them, and (2) they are making money doing it.

The end result . . . . millions of Americans and people around the world watch these movies and realize all the great qualities everyone has listed above and they're hooked, hook, line and sinker, just like the rest of us on this board.

I think Chester is right about Duke's films being shown much of the time on T.V. today. But, Duke was also of the Idea of what American Honor was in the past times.

He loved the Ladys and they loved Him Back.

He was always a Gentleman around people.

In films He pretty much played Himself and was a Great Actor.

He was a People Person and loved to be around People.

He never forgot the People that Made Him a Bigger Than Life Star when He met them in person.

Even Today when people ask me where I am Flying to today and I tell them I am going over to Duke Old 26 Bar Ranch for a few days and tell them the Story about the Ranch.
They almost always say, "John Wayne's Ranch ? You Lucky Devil You !"

I do not know of any other Person or Movie Star of the Last 100 Years that People think that way about any other Movie Star? And Many of these People were not even Alive when Duke was Here, and know His Name and Watch His Films even after almost 30 Years after His Passing and still want to Talk about Duke!

smokey, tell those cable folks down there they're missing a bet by not running John Wayne movies - there's a market untapped! Then we'll even get more great Aussie members to our message board .

chester, we dont have to have the pay tv mob showing to have him loved downunder you just have to see how quickly his movies run out the shop door to know that he is still watched a lot. we dont get many of the books about him on the aussie ebay as people just dont want to part with them. there are many fans but because internet is expensive they aren't on the net to share with us. i pay A$70 a month for broadband connection.

smokey,

Yikes! You do pay a bundle so you can hang out with us! I checked a currency conversion site, and that 70AUD translates to almost 63USD, which is about twice what we pay for DSL (high speed connection, similar to Broadband). I don't remember, but I think we pay between 20 and 30 USD for it (it's included on our phone bill, which is why I'm not sure of the exact amount.

You would think the TV folks would be all over showing a popular movie star, because if everybody wants to watch him, advertisers would want to pay for those time slots, right?? MORE money for the cable company, right?? What are they thinking?

cole

there are many who would like to watch him as i have said before when his movies are released they walk out of the stores real quick. we have pay tv down under the basic package which does not include any movie channels cost about A$40-45 a month if you want the movie channels it will cost you more. there are many areas which cant get paytv via cable they have to have satilite dishes on the roofs and this system cost more than cable. it is the cost which limits peoples access to this form of viewing there are some channels on paytv which show the older movies but they tend to show the same sort time and time again.

because we have broardband we cant afford cable tv so you can see we have to make a choice between what we want and what we can afford.

cheers smokey

I think one major reason is because his movies have generally aged well and are still very watchable today, long after westerns went out of fashion.

Somebody asked why Bing Crosby isn't well remembered and I thought one reason is because the films he starred in generally don't stand up well today.

All I can say is that after over 25 years Duke's Films are still on T.V. almost every day, and I Do Not think you can say that about any other So-Called Star of today?

The closest one can get to comparing anyone with Duke in terms of being shown even only fairly regular on some classic movies station is only a few I can think of such as: Errol Flynn and Gary Cooper. Under them, would most likely be: Gregory Peck, William Holden, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and James Stewart. After these gents, is a wide playing field.

But the closest one I can see to Duke is Errol Flynn and Gary Cooper-and even then; they aint very close to closing in on Duke's Nr 1 status And I like 'em all.

Not many people remember Lancaster, Cagney and Stewart. In fact I don't think I've ever seen a Cagney film.

Stars who are on the same level, or more, as Duke are Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Harrison Ford, Eddie Murphy, Tom Hanks, Samuel L Jackson, Sean Connery and Clint Eastwood.

{{{{Have to firmly disagree with you on the above. I know many younger people who have discovered many of the Classic Actors, and are big fans of theirs. I was fairly lucky that growing up in our household, that many of these long deceased actors; were always talked about and watched.}}}}}

Fully disagree with the above. Not a one of these listed, are on the same level as Duke. I like most of the actors listed above but, what is so special about Samuel L Jackson?

Mods-sorry for being off-topic again.

Watching a JW movie, to me, is like spending time with an old friend

Everything about his movies is great, always enjoyable, even when you have viewed them countless times you seem to still look forward to settling down and watching them again

The Duke is the greatest, to be sure!

For me, one reason is that he gives me a sense of reassurance. Somehow, when The Duke appears, I know everything is going to be all right. I feel safe again. It is a testament to his spirit that he could generate this kind of feeling in others, and that he does so to this day.

God bless The Duke!

Mr Wayne was fortunate to have had great roles and I feel fortunate that he had the talent to motivate the decision makers to offer him those roles. Also there was likely a lot of good advice given along the way. From what I have read his upbringing was not all that that it could have been given his mothers attitude about some things. Despite that he persevered and paid his dues in the industry. I think there is much to like about him.

Just a few of the reason the Duke is great!!!!!!
Hi All,
I have been a life long fan of John Wayne.
In my boyhood,i thought every movie was interesting.
in my presence, the world of the movie that had not been seen yet
was in infinity. I did not get tired no matter how i see many movies.
However, at present ,just only Wayne's movie forcibly remains with my memory.
I guess why the impression of JW westerns was especialy strong so when i was a kid.
His movie is differnt from other hero movies, and the aspect of father -child bonding
image that can be relied on appears clearly.
Paternal eye, from a this point of view, most of his western movies was simply undrestood.
Red River, SWAYR,Rio Grande,The Searchers and of course Cahill,Big Jake and so many others.
He's a great father.

Regards,
H.sanada

I believe the duke was incredibly talented. He created a charactor named John Wayne. I appreciated in his movies he was also vulnerable he wasn't above being knocked out . When I went to a Duke movie I knew I was in an adventure I knew good would trump evil eventually. He seemed a down to earth all the while bigger than life. Oh how I longed to ride along side of the duke and capture outlaws. He always showed great respect to the Indians somehow trying to make me understand these were a great people and warriors instead of the animals portrayed by many. For a couple of hours on a saturday afternoon with my jeans rolled up to a large cuff,I would leave the small town and take an adventure into the wilderness, indian territory or an Isalnd in the pacific,I fought in WWII and fought indians and Outlaws all the while sitting in a darkened theatre in small town Oklahoma, for a an hour or two I was the Duke.

I think just about everything that can be said about why Duke is the the greatest, and I have to agree with just about all of it. I think for me, the attributes that John Wayne had that impress me the most, and that I try to emulate the most, are that he had dignity, he had integrity, he was openly honest, and he didn't compromise his principles or his ethics. He was what he was. Take it or leave it. That's why I'm a fan, that's why I collect John Wayne stuff, and that's why I love him as if he was my own dad.
