View Full Version : John Wayne Movie Sets
baron von Rassilon August 1st, 2003, 01:07 AM I got to thinking about places that JW filmed a movie that would be great to vistit. I have a webpage about it but will list some here for all of you to see.
McLintock Movie Set (http://www.tombstonemotels.com/johnwayne.htm) This abandond movie set is located outside of Tombstone, Arizona. I can't find anything about where it is located it. If I find out more, I'll let you know.
Alamo Village (http://www.homestead.com/thealamovillage/AlamoVillage.html) The replica of the Alamo that JW had built is now a village with a big tourist attraction. Several other movies had been filmed there including Thirteen Days Of Glory.
If any one has comments or other place JW has filmed that can be visited, please post them. :o
itdo August 1st, 2003, 03:47 AM Those come to mind:
London, the Tower Bridge, from Brannigan
The Corrigan Ranch in California (lots of his B-movies shot there, and the location of the fort from Fort Apache)
Lone Pine (more B-movies)
The Grand Tetons (part of The Big Trail was filmed there, you get a better look at this location in Shane)
Durango, Mexico, the last I heard the Mexican town first used by JW in Katie Elder is still standing and waiting for a renaissance of the western (maybe Kevin Costner's next OPEN RANGE will do the trick)
Cong, Ireland, from The Quiet Man: Places to visit: the "patty finger" church (the one in which Pierce Brosnan was married recently), Ashford Castle, lots of shooting around there, that's the building you see in the main credits, Cohan's Pub, the train station - unfortunately, the Danaher house burned down, that's close to the spot of the big fight.
the town of Arusha from Hatari - the place of the Momella game farm was bought by Hardy Kruger and turned into a Hotel, still in operation today!
Utah: The Devil's Tower, location of the Comanchero hideout, and the place the Rio Grande fort stood
the port of Barcelona from Cirucs World
Monument Valley of course
there are more, let's think about
You know, every time I plan a vacation my girl-friend gets mighty suspicous: Which JW film was filmed there?!
itdo August 1st, 2003, 04:59 AM Other landmarks that come to mind:
Picadilly Circus, from Brannigan (most recently used in that zombie-thriller "28 days later"), and Scotland Yard, from the outside
Carson City, the beginning of The Shootist, riding in from the mountains (although I wasn't able to find the matching spot)
Normandy, the invasion places. Although all of Wayne's scenes dealing with Ste-Mère-Eglise have been filmed in the soundstages of the studios de Boulogne in Paris (it's now a TV station), he was in Normandy for one scene, and nevertheless it is well worth the visit! (other places interesting for both historical and filmbuff reasons: the Pointe du Hoc, where the Ranger assault was filmed, Utah Beach with Henry Fonda's scene, the Orne bridge from the scenes of Richard Todd and Sean Connery, and so forth.
Cinecitta in Rome (interiors for Legend of the Lost) can be visited.
USMC camp Pendleton from Sands of Iwo Jima - although I don't know if they would let you in the front door (can you get us a pass, Brian?)
The place at the river from The Alamo (that's not at Alamovillage, it's about a 2 hours drive from there, although it's almost impossible to find the exact spot and that tree). By the way, if you check out Alamo Village make sure you find the "unofficial" filmsites as well, located around Fort Clark, such as the place where Crockett and his men ambush the Mexicans from the river, and Huston's camp.
Sedona, Arizona, from Angel and the Badman (somebody let me to a couple of old western buildings yet I didn't recognize any of them).
The court of True Grit, where the hanging took place and Rooster delivers his prisoners, can be visited and still looks the same - the name of that place just slipped my mind.
does anyone know about the location of Donovan's Reef and if there's anything to see?
anybody knows about movie-spots in Alaska (see my post "I'm going North to Alaska" - that date is near now)
anybody knows what happend to Old Tuscon after that fire? Is it in business again?
Monique August 1st, 2003, 08:52 AM Hello
When I make trips to Seattle there's always the locations that the Duke shot McQ
Monique ;)
General Sterling Price August 1st, 2003, 10:42 PM True Grit was partially filmed in Ouray and Ridgeway Colorado.

General Sterling Price August 1st, 2003, 10:44 PM Itdo..
I believe the portion of True Grit you were asking about is in Fort Smith Arkansas. Of course there is actually a Dardanell in Yell county East of Fort Smith, but I don't know if any of the filming was done there.

itdo August 2nd, 2003, 04:04 AM Then there's the cave from the "Let's-go-home-Debbie"-scene in The Searches, located in Hollywood, near Bronson avenue, above the Hollywood bowl.
chester7777 August 2nd, 2003, 09:20 AM If you have not discovered Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com), you have got to check it out! It offers a great deal of information, if you can just ferret it out. One of the searches they offer, which I only recently discovered, is a search of filming locations. You can search by movie, by location, etc.
Here's the link:

Itdo, the following link might be of special interest to you:

Have fun . . . :D !

itdo August 5th, 2003, 02:47 PM It's too bad they never describe the exact spot and how to find it at IMDB.
Monique, are there any landmarks left on that Seattle beach to find the right spot of McQ? Any tracks at all?
Monique August 6th, 2003, 01:51 AM itdo
The beach scene is not in Seattle :( It is about 18.4 miles west of Port Angeles
other locations
1. Scenes under the Alaskan Way Viaduct highway
2. HarborView Hospital in the first ten minutes of the movie
3. Scenes on Interstate 5 going through Seattle
4. The Ballard Marina were McQ kept his boat, just under and about 150 meters west of the Ballard Bridge on the south side.
5. Alley were the Trans Am "Green Hornet" is smashed, nine blocks south of the "Pike Street Market" and half a block west.
6. Courthouse/Police garage used in the movie.
7. Cafeteria were the Duke and Eddie Albert argue is located in same building
8. Bar were the Duke beats up Mafia guy in restroom is four blocks away from the Seahawk stadium.
9. Some of the dirt road under interstate five is still there were the Green Hornet chases the laundry truck.
10. Veteran's Hospital where the laundry truck scene begins.
11. Country Club on lake Washington.
I'll see if I can find more
Monique ;)
itdo August 6th, 2003, 02:03 AM Hey Monique, I'm guessing you're a regular at those places and can be seen walking these roads from time to time! I wish I had a Wayne location so close - well, we got all those 007-movies made over here in Switzerland, and Eastwood's "Eiger Sanction" - and dozens of Bollywood-productions a year - and even a bit of Spielberg's Band of Brothers lately - but nothing that I'm crazy about.
BrianB August 6th, 2003, 05:26 PM Monique,
Big Jim and I live about 7 miles apart. We are north of Seattle about 32 miles. I'll see if Big Jim wants to make a seattle run on our days off. I'll have to watch McQ first. Big Jim if you read this, maybe we could take your laptop and track the movie?

Big Jim August 6th, 2003, 05:39 PM I am pretty sure this makes us big time geeks, but I'm in.
chester7777 August 6th, 2003, 11:32 PM Big time geeks?!?!?? It takes one to know one . . . we're charter members of that club, and proud of it! I think there are a bunch of big time geeks lurking around this message board (and posting, too).

looknodie August 7th, 2003, 02:25 PM Some of The Cowboys w filmed in Santa Fe New Mexico. The Anderson Ranch. it is falling down now, but still visible it is on another ranch I can get the name of it if you are interested. Nodie(look)
itdo August 8th, 2003, 02:10 AM If you're close, and if the original ranch is about to fall apart, I'd be most interested if there are any working props from the movie there. I don't know - sometimes they leave stuff they won't have use for anymore, sometimes they rent the stuff they need right there. Maybe they left the Anderson-boys gravestones? Portions of the film were shot inside the house - it was probably furnished to look authentic - but again, is maybe some of the screen-used stuff still there?
