View Full Version : Celebrity Tie-ins

This is to test your knowledge in how you can relate stars from today and tie it in to the stars of yesterday. The rules are to name the beginning actor that is given and name the movie, and a co-star in the same movie and naming another movie until you tie–in to the star and the movie that he or she was in. You must provide a name of the movie to get credit, and let’s stay with credited parts, and no cameo appearances. Stay away from TV shows also. This should be a little tough but fun. Use any source, but try your own knowledge to see what you know. There can be several ways to get to the end, so don’t get discourage if you see something that you didn’t get.

I’ll give you an example. Since we are a John Wayne board, I of course am using him either at the beginning or the end. I am going to use Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone to John Wayne in They Were Expendable.

Macaulay Culkin – Home Alone – John Candy
John Candy – Only The Lonely – Maureen O’Hara
Maureen O’Hara – The Wings of Eagles – John Wayne
John Wayne – The Were Expendable

OR

Home Alone - Macaulay Culkin - My Girl
My Girl – Dan Aykroyd – My Fellow Americans
My Fellow Americans – James Garner – The Great Escape
The Great Escape – Richard Attenborough – Brannigan
Brannigan – John Wayne – They Were Expendable

OR

The Great Escape – Richard Attenborough – Flight of the Phoenix
Flight of the Phoenix – James Stewart – The Shootist
The Shootist - John Wayne – They Were Expendable

You get it? Hopefully you do, but watch some and see for yourself. I am going to pick a list of names, and I want you to tie in with the Duke. I am very interested in what direction you take. You might be challenged, or get challenged, but that’s half the fun. Take your time and test your knowledge before you look up a directory or data base. I can’t begin to tell you that we all want a crack at this.

Alright, here we go. Hope you have a nice weekend. I will be off line until late Sunday evening or Monday. Looking forward to seeing results in this.

1. Bruce Willis – Last Man Standing to John Wayne – The Big Trail

2. John Wayne - Circus World to Jennifer Lopez – The Wedding Planner

3. Ewan McGregor – Chicago to John Wayne – Hellfighters

4. Al Pacino – Scent of a Woman to John Wayne – Trouble Along the Way

5. John Wayne – Jet Pilot to Leonard Nimoy – Star Trek; The Voyage Home

6. Michael J. Fox – Back to the Future to John Wayne – The Long Voyage Home

7. John Wayne – McLintock! to Jack Palance – City Slickers

8. Tom Hanks – Saving Private Ryan to John Wayne – Sands of Iwo Jima

9. John Wayne – Alleghany Uprising to Mel Gibson – The Patriot

10. John Wayne – Without Reservations to Sybil Shepard – The Last Picture Show

You don’t have to answer them all, and I don’t have the answers either. But you must prove the answers or it will be wrong. I will check it out, but you can check me out too, if I am wrong.

Cheers, Hondo B)

OK . . . we decided to do #6, and we could have completed it in about 4 lines, but we were having so much fun, that we went totally wild and crazy, until almost 2 AM, and we confess to a couple of visits to IMDb, but for the most part, this represents (but is hardly limited to) the combined personal knowledge of Mr. and Mrs. Chester, and a large collection of videos. We could have made any number of connections, but finally decided on this one. Here goes . . .

Michael J. Fox - Back to the Future - Christopher Lloyd

Christopher Lloyd - Back to the Future III - Harry Carey Jr.

Harry Carey Jr. - 3 Godfathers - Mildred Natwick

Mildred Natwick - She Wore A Yellow Ribbon - John Agar

(note: we could have ended here with
Mildred Natwick - Long Voyage Home - John Wayne,
but thought we'd take you on a little trip)

John Agar - Fort Apache - Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple - Wee Willie Winkie (directed by John Ford, BTW) - Victor McLaglen

Victor McLaglen - The Quiet Man - Maureen O'Hara

Maureen O'Hara - The Wings of Eagles - Ken Curtis

Ken Curtis - The Searchers - Vera Miles

Vera Miles - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin - Donovan's Reef - Dorothy Lamour

Dorothy Lamour - Road to (you choose . . . ) - Bob Hope

Bob Hope - The Son of Paleface - Roy Rogers

Roy Rogers - Dark Command - Walter Pidgeon

Walter Pidgeon - Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella - Celeste Holm
(one of Mrs. Chester's personal favorites  )

Celeste Holm - Three Men and a Baby - Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck - Myra Breckinridge - John Huston (OK, major cheat here :P )

John Huston - Treasure of the Sierra Madre - Humphrey Bogart

Humphrey Bogart - Key Largo - Lauren Bacall
(or African Queen, with Katherine Hepburn, but we chose to go the other direction)

Lauren Bacall - The Shootist - James Stewart

James Stewart - It's A Wonderful Life - Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy)

Thomas Mitchell - Stagecoach - Andy Devine

Andy Devine - Island in the Sky - James Arness
(we would never have made this connection if we hadn't seen this movie in the past week)

James Arness - Hondo - Ward Bond

Ward Bond - Tall in the Saddle - John Wayne

John Wayne - The Long Voyage Home (and it was long . . . but it could have been longer; if it wasn't so late, we might have kept going . . . )

Mrs. and Mr. Chester
(Mrs. takes top billing here because she typed all this! ;) )

P.S. I hate to see what itdo can do with this idea, with his vast wealth of knowledge

Oh no, Chesty this just looked like too much work for a simple cowpuncher from the Lazy Bee! Chapeau! as they say in France, for solving one of the riddles.

Chesty,

You know Robbie's looked easier to me. ;)

I should have known that you'd come up with that one. I was thinking along the same lines as that.

I hope our "impressive" work hasn't intimidated others from trying. It just happens that most of the films in our list happen to be in our personal collection, and as we become more acquainted with different actors and directors, we are continually surprised at the connections we can make. For example, did you know that John Ford directed Shirley Temple and Victor McLaglen in Wee Willie Winkie? That was a recent discovery for us, even though we've been watching that movie for years now. Another recent "discovery" came when our children were watching R&H Cinderella, and Chester recognized the voice of Walter Pidgeon, and said, "Hey, he's the school teacher/bad guy from Dark Command!" even though the movies are over 20 years apart.

So . . . GO FOR IT!! :D

There's an interesting cross-reference from Wee Willie Winkie to Fort Apache -

NO! I didn't want to distract from the topic at hand! This just came to mind!

- Shirley Temple wakes up when the canon is fired at her first morning at the Fort - the same situation, the same cutting, from oh so cute young Shirley in Willie Winkie to - still cute! - Shirley in Fort Apache. Guess Uncle Jack still saw the little kid in her.

No takers for this game? I didn't think that it was that hard. Let's try to get the others. I'd love to see other responses.

Ok, I'll give this a shot. I will connect Jennifer Lopez to John Wayne but not in the order of #2. I got it a little different. Here goes!

Jennifer Lopez - Gigli - Ben Afleck (sp?)

Ben Afleck - Pearl Harbor - Cuba Gooding Jr.

Cuba Gooding Jr. - Jerry Maguire - Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise - The Outsiders - Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze - Red Dawn - Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson - Chisum (or take your pick) - John Wayne

There! I do it right? This is out of my memory, and I think it is right. This is hard, but fun! dukefan1

From Al Pacino – Scent of a Woman – to The Godfather – to James Caan (that’s an easy one, haha!) – to El Dorado – to JW

Very good itdo,

I am impressed with you responses. I forgot about DeForest Kelly in the Gunfight at the OK Corral. That was easy. And I thought that Star Trek would be hard.

And Dukefan1 that was also very good too.

Looks like at this point that numbers: 2,4,5,6,8,9 are complete. The only ones left are numbers: 1,3,7,10 have been unchallenged.

Any Takers?

Robbie,

I was almost ready to tell you that Willis and Newman were never in a movie together, and low and behold, not only was I wrong about being in The Verdict, but was also in Nobody's Fool, which I do remember seeing them together in.

I just learned something new, and want to tell you great solution! I didn't even see that one coming.

All that is left to solve is 3,7,10.

Good job Robbie,

Must be tough to get #3, and #10. I thought everyone here would have gotton them all by now. I guess, I'll have to get in and figure this out over the weekend.

Number 10 really hasn’t been taken yet? It won Wayne’s companion Ben Johnson the well deserved Oscar, so it should be easy:

Sibyl Shephard, The Last Picture Show to Ben Johnson – to any JW
To make it a little longer without using Johnson:
The Last Picture Show – Peter Bogdanovich – (director) – What’s up Doc – Ryan O’Neal – Wild Rovers – William Holden – The Horse Soldiers - JW

Ewan McGregor – Star Wars – George Lucas – THX 1138 – Robert Duvall – True Grit- JW
