I can't find any pre-release announcements here in the forum, maybe I over-looked them...

Anyway, for those who haven't heard about it yet, check the news here:

http://www.cinemaretro.com/index.php?/archives/236-MAJOR-NEW-BOOK-ON-JOHN-WAYNES-THE-ALAMO.html

I didn't contribute much, but am proud to be a part of this great project.

Hi

I must admit it's a little steep for my pocket even with the $ at 2 for a £.

Thank you, Juniormike, for that info - at $110, it is somewhat out of my affordability.
Cheers - Jay:beer:

Its a little bit too expensive and I would find it difficult to comprehend any book being worth this much especially as the story has been told so many time before and this book is likely to be another rehash, so be careful how you spend your bucks.

Incidentally that is quite a revealing picture of Linda Crystal.

I agree about the price being a little steep. I'm always looking for new books relating to John Wayne, but at that price...I may have to pass.

Another thing I noticed in the article was that the book is 180 pages with hundreds of stills and behind the scene shots. Now, counting that there are words all through the book, the pictures must be small or compressed. I hate when the images are too tiny to see great detail.:glare:

If someone here does buy or receive this book, let us know if it is worth the investment. I've been wrong before. No, really....I have.

Very Expensive for what you are getting!!

I would recommend Campside Conversations by Tom Lilley. Excellent read with contributions from John Wayne's family & co stars.

JWBP sell it at a reasonable price with shipping

I have to agree with everyone else. That is a ridiculous for book, even one about John Wayne or the Alamo.

And I have to agree that Campfire Conversations is a great buy, very good stories and insight you might not get from someplace else.

juniormike,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I was wondering about your involvement in the project. Since you are in Germany, that makes it even more interesting to me. Can you tell us more?

Hi Chester,

the guys who put the book together, Dave Worrall and Lee Pfeiffer, also do publish the CINEMA RETRO magazine. I'm a film maker and writer and I do write feature articles for the magazine and also do provide material from my archive for RETRO - related projects such as this. Lee should be quite known to Duke - fans, he did the Wayne - scrapbook and released through Spyguise Ent. the great VHS tapes ON BOARD WITH THE DUKE and JW BEHIND THE SCENES. And more...

I myself am among the bigger JW collectors in Europe, I started when I was 12 in 1979. So by now it's quite an archive (in general and also on Wayne). On THE ALAMO alone I have about 400 international lobby cards, stills, posters and what have you.

I haven't seen it yet (the book). As soon as I have a copy here I'll make some pics. Sure it is expensive, but the material is fantastic and with only 1500 copies and such extensive work I suppose you can't sell it for $ 49.-. And it's all matter of 'do I really want it? do I need it?' I saw single ALAMO b/w-stills being sold at Ebay for $125,00. Considering that, I'd rather buy a book for that money :). But then again I'm one of those nuts myself, spending ridiculous amounts of $$ for old mvie stills and posters (If I REALLY want them)...

I always buy Wayne / Hawks Wayne / Ford stills/LC's/posters by the way...
RIO BRAVO, HATARI! & LIBERTY VALANCE are my favorite Duke films.

so long

Mike,

Your web site makes me wish I could speak/read German. There are several of our members who can, so I know they will enjoy your site even more.

I do recognize the name of Lee Pfeiffer, but I don't think I realized he was involved with On Board with the Duke or JW - Behind the Scenes.

As to the price, it would possibly be a better investment than a breakable collectible, which could easily cost the same or more. It's all a matter of perspective. I assume you will be purchasing one. Perhaps you could address some concerns after you receive it (like Mark's concern about the pictures being too small to really appreciate). That is often disappointing.

Thanks for the additional information.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for interesting information of the upcoming project. I think it would be great book. And I agree about your point that all depends on how strong you wish to have something. I don't consider myself collector - only fan with not long experience. So my main goal is to see all movies available for the first.
But I have a passion for book expecially so it is great to have something to look ahead
Regards,
Senta
PS Will it be available only by internet or in some big bookstores in Europe as well?

I remember Dave Worrall from his Derann days and organising a behind the scene trip of Pinewood and James Bond stage. I have a number of his books with Lee Pfeiffer. They tend to be great reads. Interesting to hear your opinion of the Alamo book Mike when you get one.

I finally got the book. All I can say is, whoever is interested in THE ALAMO and in books on Wayne should own it. It's great. Very good read too, very well researched. The material is awesome. The books are limited and each one is numbered (1500).

I don't want to go into details too much. I'm not sure it is neccessary. I think the few 'demo-pages' here speak for themselves. It is meant as an addition to the (out of print) book MAKING OF THE ALAMO, it has neither the same content nor the same images.

Here are more pages for you to see.

Mike,

THANKS for posting the pictures - they certainly allay the fear that pictures in the book might be too small. It certainly looks to be worth the money being asked!

This book is expensive, and truly only meant for Alamo and Wayne completists. On the other hand, the book is an Alamo lovers delight, but it is definitely not the final word. In their discussion of deleted scences they totally ignore scences, that a very respected Alamo film historian, has ample proof of. Also the account of the finding of the complete film might leave a bit to desired.
