View Full Version : Biography On The Duke
General Sterling Price August 5th, 2003, 10:40 PM I have yet to purchase and read a biography on John Wayne, and tonight I saw John Wayne: American at Barnes and Noble but it was 30 bucks. I didn't buy it, but it got me thinking...which of the many biographies is the best? So that when I plunk down my visa I know that I get my money's worth.
This is certainly the place to get my question answered...
Which is best?

Hondo Duke Lane August 5th, 2003, 10:49 PM GSP,
This is what I considered the best John Wayne Bio of the many written. It's well worth $30, but I bet you can get a better deal at other places, like amazon.com, books-a-million. There are other books, but the one you saw is the best in my opinion.
Cheers, Hondo B)
dukefan1 August 6th, 2003, 07:38 AM I agree with Hondo. That book, John Wayne: American is by far the best and most researches of all the biographies out there. Pilar's book, John Wayne. My life with The Duke is also a very good read. I hope this helps a little. dukefan1

Our leader Kevin doesn't like to toot his own horn, so we'll do it for him. He has made it incredibly easy to look for John Wayne books (and other stuff) at Amazon.com. Just scroll to the top of the page (any page in this message board, for that matter), click on the Amazon banner ad (where it says, "Shop now at amazon.com"), type in the title of the book (or video/DVD) you are interested in, and nine times out of ten, it'll come up. Something I learned recently is that when the search results come up, sometimes you have to scroll down the page quite a bit, because it will show you things that come close in other categories, even if it can't find an exact match (that's what happened when I searched for Tigrero). As I was interested myself, I did this for John Wayne: American and John Wayne: My Life with the Duke (the book by Pilar), and discovered JW:A for $20.97 new (if you get $25 or more new stuff, you will probably qualify for free shipping), used was $18.95, plus shipping. Pilar's book was available in paperbook, used, starting at $2, and hard cover, used, starting at $3. Even with shipping, that's pretty good (I think the shipping on one item is $3.50).
I have gotten several books and numerous videos from Amazon, most used, and been very happy.

looknodie August 7th, 2003, 02:31 PM One of my favorites is DUKE The Life and Times of John Wayne by Donald Shepherd and Robert Slatzer. Nodie(Look)
Robbie August 10th, 2003, 04:32 PM The best biography of John Wayne, easy "This Messageboard" anything you want to know about the man is answered and there are many interesting stories etc included.
However regarding books I would have to say like looknoodie "The life and times of John Wayne"
The John Wayne scrapbook is also very good.
The worst is John Wayne in the camera eye, its very inaccurate.

Hey, my first reaction was to chuckle and think, True, but you can't carry it around with you like a book. Then my wife said, "Sure you can, in a notebook computer!"
That'll be the day! :P (I'm laughing, but we may be getting one one of these days.)

Robbie,
It was supposed to be a secret until after it was published. ;)
It could be a runaway best seller, and we ALL could lay claim to helping write it! But I want to be the one with the residual rights . . . :D .

dukefan1,
Great list! I encourage all of you to check it out.
I notice you have Ermal's books on the list. For those who don't know, Ermal has written 3 books (so far), that are a part of a series that is a sequel to the movie The Cowboys. It was written with the blessing of the author of the book The Cowboys, William Dale Jennings.
My wife is reading the first one right now, and says (1) the introduction is a fascinating look at Ermal, and his life and career, and (2) she is enjoying the book so far. Having not really read any other Western novels before, she thinks it's pretty good, and an interesting premise to start with.
We just received Pilar's book JOHN WAYNE My Life with the Duke, in the mail today. We're looking forward to checking it out.
