pegwil54 January 27th, 2003, 04:49 PM I am looking for the movie that J.W. wore braces on his legs and walked with assistance of a cane. Seems to me it was a military movie but I am just not certain. If anyone can remember let me know. You can send to pegwil54@cox.net.
Thanks.
stacy January 27th, 2003, 09:32 PM Hi!
The movie you are looking for is called "The Wings Of Eagles" . It was on one of the movie channels sometime this last week. It is a war movie and is based on a true story. It is a good movie I like it because of the courage, stength and will-power that John Wayne shows in the movie. Of course that is what drew me to watching his movies, and the reason I consider him my hero. I think he was the greatest and bravest man ever! I hope I helped and good to talk to you!

kilo 6 September 6th, 2005, 07:40 PM Hello All
It was "Wings of Eagles" all right. JW plays Naval Commander Frank 'Spig' Wead. It was during a critical stage in the Pacific Theatre when the fleet was down to one Aircraft Carrier. There is a great ongoing Army Navy fight and some intense battle scenes. kilo
General Sterling Price September 6th, 2005, 08:28 PM I think the best part of Wings of Eagles was the beginning with Wayne flying that airplane before taking the step of getting flying lessons.
arthurarnell September 7th, 2005, 12:50 AM Hi
Maureen O'Haras role was drastically cut after pressure from Weads family and the finished result doesn't do her justice.
Also a cameo from Ward Bond as the film director John Dodge looking like and acting for all the world as his friend and mentor John Ford.
Apparently when the film went on location aboard a USS Aircraft Carrier, the Electricians Union insisted that its members eat in the officers quarters. Every day the electricians asked Ford if he was going to eat with them and every day Ford found a reason not to. Eventually they found out that he as eating in the Chiefs mess, the food was better and cheaper.

Arthur
General Sterling Price September 7th, 2005, 08:49 AM I always thought that was funny, "John Dodge" to represent John Ford. I wonder if they considered "John Buick" or "John Chevrolet"

To enter into the spirit of the game, let me suggest John Duesenberg.
arthurarnell September 7th, 2005, 01:14 PM Hi

Colorado Bob September 7th, 2005, 05:55 PM Sorry. I couldn't help it. Here goes........John Edsel
Anyway, I have to say that I think Wings of Eagles is one of Duke's best performances. It is also one of the few, if not the only, film in which he appeared on screen without his toupee after he started getting really thin on top. In the scene where Maureen O'Hara and he are talking about their grown kids and she walks around behind him and kisses him on top of his head is very poignant (did I spell that right?). In that scene you can truly believe that that are a long time husband and wife. Great scene. Great movie.
