There are almost as many polls of "best" westerns (or any other genre) as there are the films themselves. And all these polls are influenced by several factors, of which I think the most cogent is age. Because let's face it, people 20 years old just don't think the same as those 50 or 60 years old. But many if not most American polls will list most of the same films as those shown in your list, with the probable exception of "The Ballad of Cable Hogue"
Something I've never understood is why "The Wild Bunch" rates so highly in these polls. I can think of probably dozens of other westerns I think are better.

Here's (http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=24:D|||656~1) a list of Westerns star-rated by the site www.allmovie.com (http://www.allmovie.com) which I refer to quite often. But if you look on page 4 of this list, you'll see "Bandolero" rates only 2 stars. I personally think it is one of the best Westerns ever made.

Good list. I have to admit that I never heard of The Ballad of Cable Houge. I'm not sure but I really didn't like Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. I just didn't like it. I might have to see it again. It has been a very long time since I seen the movie and I just didn't like it that much.
Cheer

What you say is right,i think.
The point that two works of Sam Peckinpah(Wild Bunch, the Ballad of Cable Hougue)are
nominated for in this List is different from before.
However, the evaluation of the movie is controlled greatly in age and the times setting when you watched it.
A youth (Baby Boomers)having experience of "the decade of revisionist Western like as Peckinpah's" at around 20 years old makes the core of critics at around 60 years old now.
The Wild Bunch which is a cult-like among some youth at the time of shown become
popular now just like The Searchers so.
But Mr.Wayne will not be surely pleased with this result?

Hi
I've not seen The Wild Bunch right through because basically it never appealed to me. Realistic films where someone is shot and everything explodes out never really did.
The Ballad of Cable Hogue shows what a good actor Jason Robards was and its not a bad film, is it a comedy or semi serious I'm not sure but it was quite a good film.
I wouldn't argue with the rest of the list except to put Red River up a bit higher and include Gunfight at the OK Corral.
I agree with you about the age of filmgoers and what they consider to be their favourites but this is what makes the Japanese list so good as it covers the whole spectrum from the 1940s to modern.
