A very interesting review of the book and discussion of the author.

On thing that fascinated me about reading Portis is the man took the time to get little details right. For example he talks about a railroad running behind McAlister's store. Well if you ever go see the store in present day McAlister the tracks are there and in use today.

You don't get that kind of research without going to the trouble of going there.

If you've never read it the book is really very good and has some good humor that didn't make it to the movie.

Tbone,

THANK you for sharing that! It makes me want to go get the book right now and read it! The fact that the book is from the standpoint of Mattie is an interesting piece, and I also enjoyed that some of the dialogue in the movie is word for word from the book.

Yes, Jim. You should go get the book and read it. You won't be sorry you did. I'm sure you can get a copy at the Library, or you can get one very cheap on eBay. They are always on there. I loved the book and have read it quite a few times. The ending is different than the movie, but the rest is pretty much dead on.

What are you waiting on? Get moving! :hyper:

I actually like the book ending better. And there is a lot of humor in the book. It's really worth the read.

Mark, the Duke should have gotten more Oscars than he did. The industry was against him I think.
