Monique August 9th, 2003, 09:21 PM Hello
Kevin Costner was on Larry King live promoting his new movie Open Range  Looks like it might be very good  I sure hope so
His movies tend to be alittle on the long side though :(
As far as Wyatt Earp it was more accurate but I enjoyed Tombstone much more
What are your thoughts B)
Monique ;)
CHANCE August 10th, 2003, 05:54 AM Hi Monique i agree with you Costner's films do seem to be on the long side but still enjoyable i'm quite looking forward to seeing it over here if it ever gets over here i haven't seen a good western for a long time.He hasn't the the look of a cowboy but he was quite good in Silverado.
dukefan1 August 10th, 2003, 12:52 PM I am glad that Hollywood will still turn out an ocasional western. I am looking foward to seeing this movie. As far as lenth, I don't understand the complaint. With the money we are asked to put out these days to go to the theater, the longer the movie the more value for the buck! If a movie is good, I find myself not noticing the lenth. Just my take on it. dukefan1
BrianB August 11th, 2003, 07:23 PM Monique,
I believe that Open Range opens on the 15th. I'm sure to go see it. Looks like it should be a good western.

Kevin August 11th, 2003, 09:41 PM Just say no to Costner! This boy can't act. :P But I'd love to see Hollywood bring back the western more frequently.

Kevin,
That's no way to talk about your namesake! Seriously, I'm not a Kevin Costner fan myself, but let's hope he makes a good western.

Monique August 12th, 2003, 02:37 AM Hello
I know most of Costner's films go over the 120 minute time frame  If it's a good movie I don't mind that :P With "Dances with Wolves" I enjoyed Graham Greene not Costner :o So I hope Robert Duval has a great role :P
Monique ;)
Robbie hurry up to 300 :D  :D
dukefan1 August 12th, 2003, 10:18 AM I guess that I am amoung a rare group of Costner fans. I enjoy his body of work. Dances with Wolves, A Perfect Game, Bull Durham (2 favorites of mine, being a diehard baseball fan), The Postman and Wyatt Earp are all great movies that he made. I also loved Duval in Lonesome Dove, so I can't wait to see this film. I just hope it lives up to my expectations! dukefan1
Hondo Duke Lane August 17th, 2003, 04:50 PM I'm no big Costner fan, but this movie is really good. I just returned from the movie, and really thought this is the best movie (in my opinion) this year. The landscape was absolutly fantastic. It had some Duke flair with the typical good guy/bad guy type with an outsider coming in the middle of a conflict, and helping a town out of crises.
Even Kevin did a good job in the movie. I would rank it out of 10 about "8". Duvall was really great and Benning was sexy for a western gal. This is a really good movie, and I hope you will go and see it. If you are a real John Wayne fan, you must see it. Not because it is a John Wayne type movie, but a western and not trying to be polically correct like Unforgiven. Sorry, but I saw that movie as that type.
Open Range is a very good western. Go see it, folks.
Cheers, Hondo B)
Robbie August 17th, 2003, 04:54 PM I certainly will check this movie out because it has got some good reviews here and because I have never before seen a western on the big screen. Interesting Hondo that you found the unforgiven very politically correct it may have been a little bit but it is also a very good movie in my opinion Clints second best after "Dirty harry".
B)
chester7777 August 17th, 2003, 07:12 PM Hondo,
Thanks for that input. I've been hearing the ads on the radio, and based on those, it sounds like a great movie, and it also got pretty decent reviews, but it helps to have someone I know say it was a good movie.
We don't see too many movies at the theater, but Open Range sounds like one worth shelling out the bucks for.

Monique August 18th, 2003, 10:25 PM Hello
Off tomorrow so I will go see "Open Range" :agent: I will tell you what I think about it when I return
Monique :chickawow:
CHANCE August 22nd, 2003, 02:52 AM Hi Monique did you manage to see the film and what was it like i saw clips on the TV but wasn't impressed. So what did you think? :(
stacy August 24th, 2003, 10:23 PM Hi Guys!
Dukefan1, just wanted to let you know that I am a Kevin Costner fan too, so you are not alone!
I was really excited to see a western coming out again!
And I am glad to hear it is really good!
I have been wanting to go see it, and know I can't wait to see it!
Too bad they can't make westerns like John Wayne's westerns, I hope I am going to be plesantly surprised!
Stacy
dukefan1 August 24th, 2003, 11:00 PM Thanks, Stacy. i was starting to feel like the odd one out. lol. dukefan1
Hondo Duke Lane August 25th, 2003, 10:07 PM Hey everyone, You gotta go see this movie. I am planning to see it again this weekend (Labor Day weekend). I liked it that much, I haven't heard anyone talk 'bout it, so I hope someone will go and post when they come home. Even if you don't like it, tell us, I'm not always right (big surpirse), and would like other comments.
Costner is good in this movie, and I reccomend this for the Kevin Costner fan. I like him alright, but he's not my favorite. I have others (living), I like better.
Go And See Open Range, and comment here.
Cheers, Hondo B)
Hondo Duke Lane August 31st, 2003, 11:47 PM I don't usually see a movie at a theather twice, unless I really like it, and seeing Open Range today, I must say it's really worth the time to see it.
Robert Duvall was really great in the movie. I hope you will get out and support this movie as a great western. The movie scene is losing the western gerne due to no interest and I must say, this is one that will be a classic.
It's doing alright, but if you go and see it, and put out the word honestly about the movie, we might get more quality westerns over time. This is a good one.
This is one that Duke would like himself.
Cheers, Hondo B)
stacy September 3rd, 2003, 05:32 PM Hi!
I just went and saw Open Range this weekend, and I loved it!
It is not John Wayne, but I thought it was really good and can't wait for it to come out on DVD! Until then I will also have to go see again!
Stacy
Hondo Duke Lane September 3rd, 2003, 09:36 PM Wow!!
I was wondering if anyone else was going to see this movie!
Thanks stacy for commenting on this movie. I was hoping others would have seen it by now. If you get a chance, could you comment on this a little more without giving away the movie plot. ;)
It's better at the big screen. Is that what you think, Stacy?
Cheers, Hondo B)
chester7777 September 5th, 2003, 01:04 AM We Went!
. . . tonight actually. The Mrs. and I took advantage of Family Night special prices of $4.50 per ticket, and our middle son (age 15) went with us as well.
The popcorn and large soda we shared cost as much as the movie tickets! :o
But you gotta have that popcorn at the movie theater.
The movie was really very good, and the sophistication of filming techniques has advanced so much in 20 or 30 years that you can't hardly help but like it. The scenery is stunning, the color wonderful, good story line, good acting, good music . . . and enough shooting to satisfy the most jaded of cowboy fans. Excellent characterizations as well - Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner did a great job. I am NOT a Costner fan, but really enjoyed him in this flick (although I wanted to smack him upside the head near the end, as you'll understand if you see the movie). ;) The movie certainly makes you appreciate the right to keep and bear arms.
Mrs. Chester says she'll go back and see it again on the big screen when the opportunity presents itself (our 13 year old wants to see it, but we wanted to preview it first - it is pretty violent, but she can handle that). I could wait at least a week. BTW, the 15 year old isn't particularly a Western fan, but wanted to see it and said it was good.

SXViper December 28th, 2003, 11:32 PM I saw this with my wife when it came out in the Theaters and I said back then this was a great movie. I will be buying the DVD, also my wife and I our huge Costner fans, if thats a fault oh well. I would like to see Wyatt Earp on DVD, that was a good movie as well.
chester7777 December 29th, 2003, 01:43 AM I also saw that movie in the theatre with my wife. Seeing it on the big screen was well worth it! I will buy it on DVD, because I want to encourage Hollywood to make more movies like that (although I have been known to wait awhile for the price to come down a little - it must be the Scottish blood in me  ).

smokey December 29th, 2003, 07:17 AM it's nice to know that this movie is going to be released in jan 2004 in your zone so now i have 3 -6 month wait for it to be released down under :( , hope you enjoy your movie (not a happy camper) could say more but will bite my lip and wait to get this for myself just hope it doesn't cost more than A$30 or like you chester i will be tighter than a fishes bottom in water and will wait for it to come down cheaper.
cheers smokey
Hondo Duke Lane December 29th, 2003, 09:27 PM smokey,
The lowest price I could find is a little over $20us, so I know it's in big demand. That price of course is on-line price at the DVD internet stores. Did you get a chance to see it in theaters? The big screen showed a lot of great scenery. I know it will be disappointing when I get this on the tele. :(
Maybe it will be out very soon. <_<

SXViper December 29th, 2003, 11:26 PM Hondo
If you can get to a Best Buy the week it releases, which is always a Tuesday. You should be able to find it below $20. I am guessing around $15-$17 dollars. Try Sales Circular (http://www.salescircular.com) website and it should say what the price is, they usually update about Thursday before the following week. Never buy a DVD on a Sunday or Monday, they are usually at full price. New movies are released on Tuesdays and the sales last till Saturday.
chester7777 December 30th, 2003, 12:43 AM SXViper and Hondo,
Hey, you guys are GREAT! I so appreciate all the tips you all share here, to help us get what we want in the way of films, and get the best price, too.

cheers smokey ;)

SXViper January 16th, 2004, 11:57 PM Damn, all I got in the mail was 2 pairs of jeans from Cabela's and a leather coat from Winchester for buying a new gun, I would have much rather of had the DVD!! hondo did you say that this movie is, or would be disappointing when you see it on your TV? Why is that? Not a good DVD?
Man, I just have too wait till Tuesday. :)
Hondo Duke Lane January 17th, 2004, 12:07 PM SXViper,
What I meant about seeing it a the theater is that you have a much larger screen, and the TV just takes away from the beautiful scenery. I only have a 27" screen, and it just doesn't show a movie like the theater does. But maybe one day I'll get one of those HDTV Widescreen Digital Plasma 64" Screens for my viewing.
Cheers, Hondo B)
SXViper January 17th, 2004, 12:16 PM Oh yeah, I see what you mean now. Last year at about this sametime I picked up a 55 inch Mitsubishi and this past summer I completed the surrond sound for it, My dad asked me why I needed such a big TV and I told him it was because I was not around to see the Duke in most of his movies on the big screen, and I was to young to remember when I did see them, so I just put 1 in my house. I must say, its awesome watching movies.
One thing Hondo, don't make shortcuts when planning a home theater system. You will just not be happy in the end, trust me, I spent more then I shoud have because I didn't buy the right stuff the 1st time. My wife likes to remind me once in awhile :headbonk: :headbonk: :headbonk:
chester7777 January 17th, 2004, 02:55 PM SXViper,
Wives can be like that. ;)

SXViper January 18th, 2004, 10:02 AM OK, Best buy will be selling Open Range for 17.99 with a special option if you do not own Tombstone to buy them together for 27.99. I don't know Wal-marts price but I will be going to Best Buy to get mine. Oh and 1 more thing, that price is good from Tuesday the 20th thru Saturday the 24th.
itdo January 18th, 2004, 10:47 AM Kevin himself would be shouting at this offer - having Tombstone on the same bill - since they did Tombstone AFTER he announced he would be doing Wyatt Earp. And then Mr Costner was quiet upset (same thing happened to him when he announced Robin Hood - all of a sudden everybody was doing men-in-tights-films). I guess I'll have to wait for Open Range to hit theaters over here - would like to have my first impression on a movie screen, not a DVD.
Hondo Duke Lane January 18th, 2004, 11:24 AM Roland,
That's a great idea! See the movie first at the theaters. The silver screen has more to offer, and the effects are great on big screens. TV just doesn't have what theaters have; especially on my TV.
Have a great viewing, and tell us what you think about it. When is it suppose to show in your area?
Cheers, Hondo B)
SXViper January 18th, 2004, 08:12 PM I am pretty sure that the promotion is by Best Buy and Costner had nothing to do with it. Plus Wyatt Earp is not out on DVD yet. I already have Tombstone so its no big deal to me. I enjoyed both movies. At times they are both more Hollywood then anything but, I think the one liners really seem to stand out more in Tombstone. Wyatt Earp was filmed with the idea of I believe, the thought of being taken more seriously and that seems to be its major downfall.

Hondo,
Yeah, after a few years, the price will come down and be affordable.
We bought our 27" TV about 18 years ago, and paid over $1000. That was a huge amount for a TV back then, and it was top of the line. It just gave out recently, so we're thinking of replacing it. It's in our bedroom now (the big screen TV in our living room - 42" (small by today's standards) - came from our rental house, which we don't own any longer - another story for another day).
Anyway . . . since there is a limited space in the bedroom, we'll stay with the 27", but now we can get that with a built-in VCR and DVD player, for under $500 (under $400 with the coupon at Costco in a few weeks). See what I mean about the price coming down?
I've been eyeballing those big screens at Costco, and even there, you're lookin' at 5 grand - way more than I can spend.

Arthur,
Though you posted the above in a different place on the board, it seemed that one was getting off topic, so I thought I'd respond to you here.
I must echo some of the sentiments voiced in previous posts - I would encourage you to see Open Range on the big screen. It has some spectacular scenery that just won't be the same on a TV screen. The Mrs. and I don't go out to the movies very often, but that movie was well worth it!
Chester :newyear:
arthurarnell March 26th, 2004, 10:10 AM Hi Chester
Thanks for that I will probably do as you advise we've got a warner complex down in the harbour and the films always show pretty good, and for me what is more important you can hear the sound superbly.
Regards
Arthur
SXViper March 26th, 2004, 10:17 AM Let me tell you Arthur, the sound is superb. The sound on the dvd is awesome as well. You will enjoy the movie.
Hondo Duke Lane March 29th, 2004, 01:00 AM Open Range is a great movie. Dispite Costner who cannot interivew, he is a very good actor and I would guess director and producer. He needs to stay in that field and stay out of everything else. I just saw him in Field of Dreams and Dragonfly. He makes good movies. I can't take that away from him.
Go see the movie at your local movie house, all of you across the pond. You'll really love this movie as a great American western. Even Duke would be proud of that movie.
Cheers, Hondo B)
Rooster March 30th, 2004, 08:35 AM Just rented the DVD of Open Range, and it is a MUST for our library. (Okay, I'm slow.) Off to Evilbay I went, and found that there are two different versions. One cover shows individual faces, the other shows someone standing in the shadow of a doorway. What gives? Anyone know?
Grant
SXViper March 30th, 2004, 11:28 AM As far as I know there is only 1 version of the DVD, and thats a widescreen version with the faces of Kevin, Robert, and Annette. The pitcure of Kevin standing in the door is from one of the movie posters, which I have framed. If some other distributor is using that picture as a dvd cover I have not seen it yet.
Kevin March 30th, 2004, 09:46 PM O Please save me from Kevin Costner.....Someone please!! :dead:
Just thought I would post my dis-taste for the the guy. B)
Not sure how I'll be able to watch Open range. I'll keep looking for a Kevin Costner blocker to put on my DVD player. hehehe
Hondo Duke Lane March 30th, 2004, 11:04 PM Now, now Kevin! I have a lot of problems with the guy, but he does put out some good pictures. He just needs to keep his mouth shut and stop expressing his opinions. And most of all, stop acting like he is the only person in the world that thinks he can do it better than any one.
He did make a comment about Duke and his terrible acting and the corney westerns from the past, so what? Costner couldn't hold a candle with any of those people from the golden past. He just needs to stay where he is and keep on doing what he does. I bet in 40 or 50 years, he won't even be known as a classic actor. And he sure won't be in the top ten actors of the year, like Duke has been 24 years after his death. :)
Cheers, Hondo B)
SXViper March 31st, 2004, 02:39 PM Not to keep this subject rolling along to much but I echo Hondo's comments. The movies that I liked him in allot are Silverado, No Way Out, Field of Dreams, Wyatt Earp, Robin Hood(yeah I know it was over the top at times, but I still liked it), The Postman, For Love of The Game, Tin Cup and Open Range. He does have his faults and I can for the most part over look them. But don't let your dislike of Costner deter you from watching a really good western. Seeing Duvall's performance is well worth a rental fee.
broncolane April 1st, 2004, 03:56 AM I saw Open Range last night and can say I enjoyed it.
It was a little too long, the scenery was fantastic, the shoot out was worth waiting for, and in my opinion, Robert Duval stole the movie he just lit up every scene he was in.
We should thank Costner, for I believe he really loves the genre, that's why this movie is too long, I guess he just doesn't want to stop!
On the whole, I think it is a good spring board for more Westerns.
I am looking forward to seeing the new Alamo movie.
Bronco Lane
Hondo Duke Lane April 8th, 2004, 10:09 PM broncolane,
Duvall made that movie successful. I don't think anyone can do any better. I give credit to Costner for doing this film, and getting Duvall, but he could have stayed out of and found someone else to play the part like Tom Sellack, or Randy Quaid. Anyway, it was a good movie and hopefully we'll get more westerns soon.
And I will not count The Alamo (2004). It has not been given good reivews. No character stands out as a hero, and they seem to keep out of the leadership role. That's according to a local reviewer.
Need to get more westerns out there.
Cheers, Hondo B)
SXViper April 8th, 2004, 11:41 PM Yeah I agree on The Alamo probably being a flop!! For god sake's, how can Billy Bob being playing a character like Davey Crockett? Thats just wrong if you ask me, wrong, wrong, wrong!!!
B5Erik April 14th, 2004, 10:47 AM I LOVED Open Range! It was a great movie, not just a great western.
I rented it a couple of months ago, and I'm looking to buy it when I can find it for under $15.
I thought it was well written, well acted (VERY well acted) and Costner did a great job directing it. Even people who dislike Kevin Costner will like this one if they like westerns at all. I'm betting this one goes down as one of the all time classic westerns in years to come.
And I'm really disappointed at the revisionist/deconstructionist history of the new Alamo movie. I was listening to a radio talk show the other night and a historian was on saying how the new movie was more historically accurate than John Wayne's version, but that they made Davy Crockett wimpier than he actually was (after all, the guy was a bear hunter, congressman, etc). I'm gonna skip this one.
