View Full Version : Your Favorite 1948 Film
Hondo Duke Lane May 4th, 2008, 09:45 PM This poll is to pick your favorite movie of 1948. What a great year for Duke!
One great movie for an actor in one year is a successful year for anyone. John Wayne made four (4). In 1948, John Wayne came out with Fort Apache (March 9), Red River (July 14), Three Godfathers (December 1) and Wake of the Red Witch (December 31).
Pick your favorite, and why is it your favorite.

kilo 6 May 4th, 2008, 09:58 PM I went with Fort Apache. I liked the character and script that JW had in this one best of the four films but they were all good IMO.
gt12pak May 4th, 2008, 09:59 PM I agree. Four excellent movies, but I have to go with Red River as my favorite.
Hondo Duke Lane May 4th, 2008, 10:30 PM These are excellent films, and a great year for Duke, or anyone IMO. I pciked Three Godfathers just because of the great story line and the acting. Not to say that the others didn't have great acting. If I had to rank these four movies, I'd pick (1) Three Godfathers (2) Red River (3) Fort Apache (4) Wake of the Red Witch. Take note that all four are very close to me, and anyone could be number 1. This was not easy to pick.
Cheers
dukefan1 May 5th, 2008, 01:19 AM It was a toss-up between The Three Godfathers and Red River. But RR wins out. A classic if there ever was one. If there ever was a movie that Duke was scary in, Red River did the job. I'd have did anything Dunson asked of me....no questions asked. He brought great intensity to the roll.

H.sanada May 5th, 2008, 01:36 AM i think Duke's outstanding acting starts from Red River.
so.I picked Red River.

arthurarnell May 5th, 2008, 02:06 AM Hi
It has to be Red River followed very very closely by Wake of the Red Witch, two vastly different films both showing John Wayne to be quite an actor.
1948 must have been a pivotal year for John Wayne.
As we have said before in other posts look at Thomas Dunsen and Captain Ralls and see Ethan Edwards.
Regards
Arthur
ethanedwards May 5th, 2008, 03:09 AM Red River, followed closely by Fort Apache
ZS_Maverick May 5th, 2008, 05:39 AM I went with Red River. I like that movie a little more each time I see it.
William T Brooks May 5th, 2008, 05:44 AM Red River was a Much Better Film, But I Picked "Fort Apache" just because I was a Horse Soldier Extra in the Film ! (bud)

Jay J. Foraker May 5th, 2008, 05:12 PM "Red River" and "Fort Apache" run neck and neck in my mind.

DukePilgrim May 5th, 2008, 05:15 PM Has to be Red River followed by Three Godfathers. Im not to fussed on Fort Apache as it is primarily a Fonda movie with John Wayne in a sceondary role.

smokey May 6th, 2008, 10:15 AM i went for 3 godfathers maionly because it was a moving story about how harden men cared for the little baby and got it savely back to town, even though 2 of them lost the battle to do so
cheers smokey
Hondo Duke Lane May 6th, 2008, 05:11 PM I'm sorry that I didn't mention that the dates beside the movie choices were the release dates to these movies. But the votes are really what I expected so far. This was a great year for John Wayne and in celebration of the 60th anniversary of these movie release, I hope you will take the time to watch them. I plan to myself.
Cheers
Stumpy May 7th, 2008, 12:02 PM Im not to fussed on Fort Apache as it is primarily a Fonda movie with John Wayne in a sceondary role.

I'm not sure I agree with your opinion here, Mike.
I personally felt that Fonda, Wayne, Agar and Bond all had about the same amount of exposure. In fact, I'd have to pick "Ft. Apache" as my favorite Duke movie that year, closely followed by "Three Godfathers" and "Red River".
Though our main man didn't play in it, there was another excellent movie released in 1948.
A Bogey feature called "Treasure of Sierra Madre".
"Badges? badges? we don't need no stinkin' badges" A memorable bit of movie dialogue.

All of them are great pics, but like the majority of voters, I have to go with Red River.
Aside from JW's great portrayal of Tom Dunston, I love anything with Walter Brennan, especially when he's paired with the Duke (who doesn't love him as Stumpy in Rio Bravo).
And Montgomery Clift turned in another great perfomance as well.
A compelling story and a terrific cast.
Stony May 7th, 2008, 12:48 PM Fort Apache for me.
Hondo Duke Lane May 17th, 2008, 10:56 AM Are there any Wake of Red Witch fans? No one has picked this one.
Cheers  Hondo
Senta May 18th, 2008, 02:14 AM Hi all,
I\m really thinking that Fort Apache is the best amuong these as a movie with it's Ford direction, deep problems story line and wonderful cast. Personally may be I like Three Godfathers even more, but FA is sure above them. The Wake of the Red Witch can sure may be my choice if there wasn't so great movies alongside. Red River is of course great role for Duke but never was amoung my favorites.

Vera
InHarmsWay June 4th, 2008, 10:40 PM Tough...very tough! but along with my friend kilo I just had to say Fort Apache.

SXViper June 4th, 2008, 11:03 PM That's a tough one but I have been fond of Fort Apache ever since I saw it over 30 years ago. I like Red River but I too will go with Fort Apache.
BILL OF PA June 5th, 2008, 12:00 PM I also think FA is more of a Fonda movie with Duke as second lead, but I like this movie a little more then those other great films.
captain dan June 6th, 2008, 04:37 PM I ENJOYED THEM ALL BUT I HAD TO CHOOSE RED RIVER. IT WAS THE DUKE AT HIS BEST. ROUGH AND TOUGH BUT ULTIMITLY A MAN WITH A HEART.
Hondo Duke Lane June 7th, 2008, 07:23 PM This is really great. I enjoy your comments and your votes. I suspected that Red River would take the lead just from the great comments from you on other posts, and I must say that I knew that Fort Apache would be there very close. I thought that there would be more response on Wake of the Red Witch. I guess that the others are really great movies and it is just impossible to have a number one fan out there for the old shipping movie.
I'd love to see more votes on this but maybe you can tell me what would make this movie your favorite movie (Wake of the Red Witch). Could it be that it is not a western, not one of Duke's better movies, or could it be the co-stars/female lead?
Loved to hear your comments on this.
Cheers  Hondo
ethanedwards June 7th, 2008, 07:30 PM Mike has a good point,
and there was some discussion to the merits
of that movie here,

The Ringo Kid June 13th, 2008, 04:28 PM It was a tough decision for sure but, I too chose Fort Apache-just barely eking out Three Godfathers.
