View Full Version : What Is Your Favourite Duke War Movie?
ethanedwards June 7th, 2008, 07:05 PM There was a poll similar to this last yerar,
but without much response.
So please vote for you favourite Duke War Movie.
Mine is In Harm's Way
Stumpy June 7th, 2008, 08:25 PM Mine is "They Were Expendable".
chester7777 June 8th, 2008, 01:19 AM I'm sure I've shared this opinion several times over the past few years . . . is this deja vu??
I agree with Stumpy, as They Were Expendable is my favorite John Wayne war movie. It has a haunting quality that makes it feel like you're there with them. It's hard to recreate that feeling in a movie, but somehow it is accomplished in this film..
dukefan1 June 8th, 2008, 03:12 AM Mine is also In Harm's Way. Just watched it again the other day. I like Sands of Iwo Jima as my second favorite, followed closely by The Sea Chase.

Jim, you probably have, but from searching back,
there was very little response to a previous poll/polls.
Jacob-R387 June 8th, 2008, 08:54 AM mine is "Sands of Iwo Jima"
Jay J. Foraker June 8th, 2008, 11:27 AM In order:
In Harm's Way
Sands of Iwo Jima
The Green Berets
They Were Expendable
As usual, if I happen to watch one of these, at that time it moves to the top!
Cheers - Jay:beer:

Popol Vuh June 10th, 2008, 08:39 AM OK, OK I've voted. Pretty sure I'll be the only one voting for Back to Bataan. I really like the story in this one.
SXViper June 10th, 2008, 01:54 PM I went with They Were Expendable, it was tough though as I also really like In Harm's Way and Sand's of Iwo Jima.
DukePilgrim June 10th, 2008, 03:33 PM Has to be Sands of Iwo Jima followed by Green Berets

Tbone June 12th, 2008, 08:52 AM I have several favorites here but They Were Expendable is probably my favorite.
captain dan June 12th, 2008, 10:42 AM In Harms Way is also my favorite. I watched it last night. My number two is They Were Expendable.
A great quote from In Harms Way
"A Fast Ship Going inn harms Way"
stagecoach50 July 14th, 2009, 08:35 PM Flying Tigers is my favorite, I think it is classic John Wayne, humor, guts, tough, gets the girl, etc..

Lt. Brannigan July 14th, 2009, 10:19 PM Back to Bataan is my all time favorite, it's just pure awesome.
oliver13 August 2nd, 2009, 05:51 PM Mine is In Harms Way. I actually really enjoy all of his war movies.
nordy August 28th, 2009, 11:03 PM How do you pick between They Were Expendable, In Harm's Way, and Sands of Iwo Jima? I finally went to the latter because of the power of his acting. Yet he's magnificent in the other two also. Who said this guy couldn't act?
Hondo Duke Lane August 29th, 2009, 11:55 PM It was between Green Berets and Sands of Iwo Jima. I picked the latter as well. Due to the fact of the great acting and it was along with Rio Bravo that propelled me to learn more about Duke and his life. It was the start of my video collection as well. This was the second of many more movies I collected starring John Wayne.
Cheers
ZS_Maverick August 30th, 2009, 10:30 AM I voted for "Back to Bataan". That's my personal favorite of his war movies. Also I like "Flying Tigers", "Sands of Iwo Jima" and "The Longest Day". (actually the only two I don't care for are "Sea Chase" and "Reunion in France", other than that I like 'em all)
I always have considered "The Alamo" and the "Cavalry Trilogy" to be as much war movies as they are westerns... to me four of the best historical/military movies.
stacy September 5th, 2009, 12:39 PM I love the Wings of Eagles! It inspires me to keep going when things get bad, and to me even though the movie is on a true life character, I believe that if John Wayne would have been in that same situation, he would have fought every step of the way. Just like he did in real life with his cancer fight! I have to say he inspires me everyday of my life!!!!

kevin k November 9th, 2009, 10:18 PM in harms way -great acting all around-anyone who says hes not an great actor has never seen his scenes with douglas, neal meridith or de wilde plus they say he was coughing really bad by then and you cant tell
Gorch November 10th, 2009, 07:41 PM My vote is for Sergeant Stryker's haunted bitterness that drives him to the Sands of Iwo Jima.
We deal in lead, friend.
chester7777 November 11th, 2009, 06:23 AM My vote is for Sergeant Stryker's haunted bitterness that drives him to the Sands of Iwo Jima.
Very good assessment of the movie.
Sands is my second favorite Duke War Movie.

brick May 1st, 2010, 06:45 AM In harms way is the best in my opinion. Duke and douglas are superb The cast is second to none. It shows how asleep we were but it also shows how fast awake we became and just how we took control of the south Pacific. i watch it frequently as also Patton.
nordy May 3rd, 2010, 12:09 PM There are so many. I've never seen Duke give a better performance than In Harm's Way. Sgt. Stryker ("haunted bitterness" awesome description above) makes me want to lock and load. Other great performances in "They Were Expendible" and in "On Wings of Eagles," both of which essentially tragedies. Which is the best? Maybe I'll just have to watch them all again to decide.
kevin k May 3rd, 2010, 11:58 PM the horse soldiers is great
nordy May 10th, 2010, 08:35 PM The Horse Soldiers is a good movie, but it doesn't come close to John Ford's cavalry trilogy (Fort Apache, Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande) of the late 1940s. I think age and alcoholism were taking their toll on Ford. So I always watch the Horse Soldiers with a sense of disappointment close at hand--not that I don't enjoy it.
wtrayah October 15th, 2011, 03:22 PM I liked They were Exspendable, but i thought it dragged a little bit. Its a toss up for me between Sands of Iwo Jima and In Harm's Way.
