Monique August 16th, 2003, 03:13 AM Hello
I would say the following movies John Wayne should of won an Oscar B)
1. Stagecoach
2. Red River
3. The Searchers
4. Rio Bravo
5. Sands of Iwo Jima
6. The Shootist
Monique ;)
BrianB August 16th, 2003, 06:12 AM I would have to say The Shootist That was nothing but John Wayne from beginning to end.
You could see him cover all his westerns in that one final role. The other movie I could honestly say should of recieved an Oscar would be The Searchers . John Wayne role as Ethan Edwards has my vote as the best western ever.

Hondo Duke Lane August 16th, 2003, 01:25 PM I picked The Searchers, because that has to be some of his finiest acting I've ever seen. But I would also pick The Quiet Man, and Red River. All I can say, BrianB, I'm surpirse you didn't mention Sands Of Iwo Jima.
I would pick that movie also.
Cheers B)
dukefan1 August 16th, 2003, 01:32 PM There are alot of movies he should have been nominated for, but when it comes to The Searchers , I think it is a crime that he didn't get nominated. Some of todays best directors and actors always mention his portrayal of Ethan Edwards as something of a high standard of excellence. I can't even think of what the Academy was thinking when the nominations were handed out. dukefan1
Robbie August 16th, 2003, 02:38 PM His most complete performance would be that of Tom Dunson but in my view his best is that of Ethan Edwards.
Runners up Sean Thornton and JB Books.

InHarmsWay April 30th, 2004, 10:45 PM personally,i believe 1/3 or even 1/2 of all of the dukes movies were oscar worthy.....
William T Brooks October 2nd, 2004, 10:41 AM From a acting stand point "The Shootist" was his best! From the most fun to watch "She wore a Yellow Ribbon". For the darkest side of Duke it was "The Searchers". Chilibill :cowboy:
The Ringo Kid October 16th, 2004, 04:30 PM Of the ones listed, I chose The Searchers, next one would have been Sands of Iwo Jima.
The Ringo Kid :cowboy:
larrybusch January 3rd, 2005, 01:30 PM :cowboy: The duke should have had an nomination(Oscar) for The Shootist, and that's for all the movies he made and gave us in that business.
And all what he stands for. :cowboy:
arthurarnell January 3rd, 2005, 04:33 PM Hi
I think the Shootist was one of his finest movies and certainlywas good enough for at least an Academy Award nomination. If the studio hadn't mucked about with the release date I think it would have beenat least nominated. As it was releasing it when they did it stood no chance, and that was criminal and an insult to a fine man.

B5Erik May 8th, 2005, 12:09 PM I've got to go with The Shootist on this one.
That performance was simply brilliant. He was so honest in the role that you really believe that he is John Bernard Books, and not just John Wayne in another role written specifically for John Wayne. The character was given so much depth by JW that his performance could have carried the entire movie, if necessary. As it turned out it wasn't necessary as everyone in the movie was great - as if they wanted to keep up with The Duke, and make what they knew was possibly his last movie one of his best.
They succeeded.
John Wayne really should not only have been nominated for that performance, he should have won the Acedemy Award.
Emmanuel May 22nd, 2005, 02:32 PM Hi Everyone.
It's THE SEARCHERS for me. No one else could have done that part as well as Duke.
Emmanuel.
................................
I'll try one of those black beers.... THE QUIET MAN. :jump:
ethanedwards May 22nd, 2005, 04:49 PM For Me,
THE SHOOTIST
he made a great western, when the genre, was finished, at that time.
He played a tremendous part, with great conviction, and of cause,
now, we all know why!
He was supported, by two great actors, but Duke, stood head and shoulders, above them all.
gt12pak March 19th, 2007, 09:05 PM It would have to be the Shootist. Period.
DukePilgrim March 20th, 2007, 03:29 AM The Shootist should have won an Academy Award for John Wayne.
The Searchers was way before it time, Red River should have warranted at least a nomination.
If it hadnt been for the politics issue I think he would have also been nominated for The Quiet Man.

Lt. Brannigan April 24th, 2007, 11:02 PM The Shootist at the very least should have got him a lifetime achievement award.
DakotaSurfer June 10th, 2007, 01:35 PM Somebody is digging up some really old Polls... with our increased board size, just start them over.
Ethan July 10th, 2007, 08:24 PM I believe Duke should have been nominated for best actor, in the following films.
#1 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
#2 Red River
#3 The Searchers
#4 The Quiet Man
#5 In Harms Way
#6 The Shootist
He certainly should have walked away with an Oscar for #1 / 3 / 4 / 6.
And hard pressed by my standards why he was'nt nominated for # 2 /
5 !!!!
My two cents.
Regards
Ethan
gt12pak July 10th, 2007, 08:24 PM Dakota, I'm guilty as charged. As a newbie myself, I constantly dig up old threads.
oliver13 August 2nd, 2009, 06:32 PM The Searchers. Ethan Edwards was such a cold hard character. I thought that this was the Dukes greatest performance.
stagecoach50 August 3rd, 2009, 09:05 AM I really like Duke in his war movies, at one point he had made more war films than westerns.
stacy September 5th, 2009, 12:50 PM I think of all the Shootist, the Searchers, and the Quiet Man he sould have at least got a mention for an award. To bad nobody really saw what a good actor he was back then.
