This series differed from other TV westerns,
in that it concentrated more on the characters and relationships.
great solid and credible acting by it's main stars,
James Drury asThe Virginian
Doug McClure as Trampas
and Lee J. Cobb as the Judge.
The series was also helped by the multidude of
well known support actors, some of which, I listed.
Lasting 9 years, making it one of the longest,
it was revamped in 1971, as The Men From Shiloh
but failed to rekindle it's fanbase.

The Virginian was one of the better western shows on tv. Of course it fell into NBC's western stable of the late 50's to the early 70's along with Bonanza and High Chaparall and all in glorious living color. It wasn't till a few years after it was on that I saw the Joel McRea movie version, that I found out that the Trampas character was really the villain of the story but, they made him a good guy for tv. And in the tv version, there was no girl for The Virginian. It was still an enjoyable show and I watched it quite abit.

When I saw the title of the thread I thought you mean one with Gary Cooper. This one seems to be a remake of it, because of the similiar list of caracters.

Senta, as far as I know, there's been at least three versions of The Virginian as a movie. The first was with Gary Cooper back in the early 30's, the next was with Joel McCrea in the 40's and, then there was a made for tv version on TNT just a few years back that starred Bill Pullman in the title roll. There may have been others but, those are the three that I remember.

Ok, I just checked the imdb.com site and the Gary Cooper version was made in 1929 and there were two versions before that. One in 1914 and another in 1923 and the latest version was made in 2000 and James Drury, the tv Virginian had a small role in it.

If anyone this side of the pond can
get the Irish tv channel TG4, they
are showing "The Virginian" at 5.00pm
every evening.

I have fond childhood memories of this show, as my mom watched it regularly through about 1969.

My biggest memory of it, I feel silly to say, is that I had a major crush on Doug McClure (where is a blushing smiley when I need one??).

Mrs. C :angel1:

A lot of young girls/women did, Sue. That's what I was trying to get across to Vera - that Trampas was one of the most appealing characters on the TV show, which is why I couldn't understand why his character wore a black hat in the films.

I've only seen a very few episodes of this show but remember liking it very much. I don't know the episodes title that sticks out in my mind but, it was the last one I got to see before it was taken off our cable tv line-up. Anyway, I do remember that Lee J. Cobb, Doug McClure and John Banner (pre-Sgt. Schultz of Hogan's Heroes fame) who was a Waiter at some very fancy hotel that the Lee J. Cobb character stayed in..

Does anyone know why John Dehner didn't keep Lee J. Cobbs part? He was in 4 episodes in '66 after Cobb left.

I always liked Dehner as Morgan Starr, but Bickford was a great addition also. Heck I even like Stewart Granger when it became The Men From Shiloh-wish it had run longer.
