Hawk played by Richard Jordan was a very bad villian in Rooster Cogburn. He even killed some of his own people.

While Richard Boone was a great villian, I'd have to cast a vote for Bruce Dern in
The Cowboys. It was the first movie that I saw where Wayne died before it was over, and that has stuck with me. Boone was cool, but Dern was bad.

My favorite JW movie villian is the Bruce Cabot character (Laredo Stevens) from Angel and The Badman. I don't necessarily hate him, just dislike in a likeable kind of way. ;)

OMG it has to be Bruce Dern.....I watched the cowboys when I was 11 or 12 and to this day I can't stand Bruce Dern!!!! And just because he killed John Wayne in a movie...how wierd is that?

Greatest bad guy? I would have to say the Japanese Marine who shot Sgt Stryker,
or the other Japanese Marine who shot the Big Guy driving the bulldozer in the Fighting SeaBees.

I have to agree that Bruce Dern played such an evil guy. I read in an interview that if given the chance to do it again he would not have taken the part. It hurt his career for many years as he was so good at being bad, and John Wayne was so loved.

Hello
I agree that Bruce Dern is one bad Villian  And he did kill John Wayne in the Cowboys But John Wayne played a much weaker person in theCowboysIf you had Lee Marvin in the CowboysThe Duke would of been chopped liver  Watch againThe man who shot Liberty Valance VS The Cowboys And you will see John wayne was John Wayne in Liberty Valance B) played a very much stronger role :( In the Cowboys he was just a man trying to save his family-vs-a man who did not put up with squat

I forgot clean about Bruce Dern, I hate him but he was very good in "The Cowboys". Can't beleive someone nominated Bruce Cabot for Angel he was very lightweight.

The most surprising bad guy is Ward Bond, in Tall in the Saddle. I'm so accustomed to seeing JW and Ward Bond buddies, so to see Ward as an enemy was quite a departure.

Now Bruce Dern . . . :headbonk: !!! He was a real slime ball in The Cowboys (but he gets shot :dead: in War Wagon :P ).

Liberty Valance was a sinister bad guy of the first order  , and it was a pleasure to see him die.

Liberty Valance gets my vote. I just can't stand a bully. I was glad he got lead poisoning. Mr Dern came in at a close second. The minute he man-handles the boy, I was ready to pull him out of my tv and let him have it. dukefan1

Without a doubt Bruce Dern. He is the guy you love to hate. Bruce Dern has said that he has paid for that role many times over. :cowboy:

I must have misunderstood the question. I thought you said favorite JW adversary, not the nastiest, meanest, or toughest, or the big heavy. ;)

Hum, There's so many.........................

But, Lee Marvin was pretty bad in TMHSLV and, Marvin was an evil one in the Comancheros.

dukefan1,

You and me both!!

And dukefan1, I must say, I love that little video clip at the bottom of your posts. I didn't realize at first that's what it was, until all of a sudden it started movin'!

Between you and baron, we've got ourselves some computer experts around here that really add a little more spark to this board - keep it up!

Cabot is a fair enough nomination, I just didnt expect him to get picked because he didn't really do much, but I suppose we all have our different tastes.

Here is another gentleman whom is not really a bad guy but is so hateful towards Duke that I wish Duke would have killed him. He is the sheriff in "The Shootist", have you ever met a more disgusting person?
