View Full Version : New Features with Recent Upgrade
chester7777 July 16th, 2008, 11:05 AM I wanted to make you guys aware of a fun new feature that became available with the recent software upgrade to the message board.
It is called "Social Groups" and is kind of a combination of a message board within a message board and a permanent chat.
Each member has the ability to set one (or more) up.
1. Go to your User CP (Control Panel)
2. Look in the column along the left side, and look for the Networking section.
3. Click on "Social Groups." What comes up next is a listing of existing groups. Below that list (which only contains one right now), in the bottom bar, is a clickable option, "Create a New Group."
4. When you click that, a new screen comes up.
5. Here, you have the ability to give your group a name (JW Fans from California, for example), a description, and a type (Public, Moderated, Invite Only).
6. Below that are three check boxes - Enable Albums, Enable Messages, and "Users must join to view the content." The first two are checked as a default value.
As near as I can tell, you don't have the ability to have different threads within the group, but you can maintain a running conversation over time (kind of like a chat room with longevity), and easier to follow than a series of PMs. This would be a great place to follow up on some topic that is not really germaine to our purpose, but which some members would like to pursue. It's especially nice for those who are in such different time zones that a real-time chat is not feasible, but has the same continuity of a thread or chat.
I hope that made sense, and that some of you will have fun with it!
Chester :newyear:
P.S. There is a whole section (http://www.dukewayne.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_social_groups ) in the FAQ regarding Social Groups.
ethanedwards July 16th, 2008, 02:18 PM Well said, Jim, Our's seems to be being used with good effect!
Kevin July 16th, 2008, 04:49 PM Thanks Jim for posting this, I haven't gotten around to posting about new features.
Senta July 16th, 2008, 04:55 PM It is very interesting, but it takes time to get used to it. thanks for your efforts Kevin.
DukePilgrim July 16th, 2008, 05:24 PM Site looks well Kevin. Well done & Thanks for all your hard work.
Mike
Kevin October 17th, 2008, 11:14 PM A new small feature has been added called: Private Conversations (Threaded PMs)
description:"Private Conversations is a small mod that adjusts the way your PMs are displayed; Instead of the old method which shows one at a time quoting the last message, this threads them and makes them work much like the Conversation feature that visitor messages use. A conversation is defined as two users PMing each other using the same PM title (With or without the "Re:" prefix), so as to not mix up different conversations that aren't related."
Now back to the labs.

Elly October 24th, 2008, 01:59 AM Hi Kevin
I like the new board now I am getting to know my way around it. However, there should be a special rank for those of us who are into quality posting rather than quantity:wink_smile:
arthurarnell October 24th, 2008, 04:22 AM Hi Elly
Something like Phillospher perhaps that providing its not all greek to us:wink_smile:

ethanedwards October 24th, 2008, 04:52 AM The new rankings have come out well.
At least it takes us into the future,
without the need for any more attention to this for years!
Stumpy October 24th, 2008, 08:46 AM I wish we had the option of changing our member names. That way, we could start afresh with zero posts.

Just to rebel against the philosophy that more is better, Elly.
There are people on this board who obviously view posting as a contest. I don't, and never will.

Ah! a man after my own heart.
Although, by thee and me posting this mini question and answer session kinda goes against the quantity part of our theory

I saw this one time, but not after that. Do I need to set something to activate it again? Or is it gone?
Stumpy October 27th, 2008, 09:26 AM I have a question about your "recent new features". Yesterday evening, when I brought up the JW web site, I had notification that my password was 673 days old and needed to be updated, which I did. I also had to furnish a new email address, which I also did. Afterwards, I received an email containing a link that I had to click on to confirm my new email address. I went through all this rigamarole burt now each time I return to the board, I have to log on anew with my new password. Is this to be the procedure in the future each time I come here?
chester7777 October 27th, 2008, 09:34 AM Stumpy,
Just click that little box "Remember Me" the next time, and you should not have to provide your new password again. I was signed on yesterday, and when I submitted a post, all of a sudden in the middle of my visit, I encountered that same screen! So I did the same as you. A little later, when I was doing some moderator-related thing, my old password was still saved in that particular log-in screen and I had to sign in someplace where I haven't had to enter a password for a few years. I understand your surprise.
So . . . look for that "Remember Me" box and you shouldn't have any more problems (at least with that piece of life).

I've been checking the "remember me" box each time I log in, Jim, and it's still requiring me to give the new password each time I log in. Apparently, there's some glitch in the system.
ethanedwards October 27th, 2008, 10:23 AM When prompted to enter a NEW password,
I just entered the same one,
confirmed it, and it was accepted,
so no need for all the 'rigamarole'!!
SXViper October 27th, 2008, 11:00 AM I had the same thing happen to me. I changed it, and it seems to be working fine for me. I am on my system's at work and home.

Weird, Keith.
Following your advice, I logged out, entered my old password, and logged back in, all without any hitches at all. And it's accepting my old password with no questions asked, even though I hadn't switched over from the new password I was required to enter this morning, along with the new email address. These computers can drive you crazy.
arthurarnell October 29th, 2008, 04:48 AM Hi Jim
tell me about it! I had the same problem but I have now been given my new password which I will never ever reember, but when I came on today it seems to be fine, I'll keep everything crossed.
Regards
Arthur
etsija October 30th, 2008, 03:57 PM Since yesterday, I think, when I was prompted to change my expired pass word, I have to log in every time I come here, even though I've ticked the "remember me" box. What am I doing wrong?
SXViper October 30th, 2008, 04:07 PM What do you use to surf the web with? If it's IE(Internet Explorer) then try using Mozilla firefox. It's free to download and tends to not have the little quirky issue's that IE has.

Hi etsija,
I have moved your posts here.
Please read this and the last few posts,
I am sure you will sort this out!
Elly November 11th, 2008, 02:56 AM Hi Keith
please can you tell if there is a way to send a PM to ALL of those on my friends list at the same time and if so how do I do this please? thanks
chester7777 November 11th, 2008, 01:35 PM Elly,
Assuming the Quick Links button is working, go there and pick "Open Contacts Pop-up" which will bring up a separate window with everybody on your Friends list. Put a check mark next to every user to whom you want to send a PM, and down at the bottom, there should be an option to "PM Users."

Elly November 11th, 2008, 02:38 PM Hi Sue
I tried that thank you but when I clicked to submit the message it said too many recipients i could only sent it to two recipients at a time?
So ended up sending it several times over to two recipients at a time long winded but it got there in the end
chester7777 November 12th, 2008, 04:36 PM Sorry, Elly, I guess there is a limit that I was unaware of (moderators have a slightly higher limit). In the future, if you want to do something like that, you might contact Kevin and let him know of your need and maybe he can help you out, since you had a legitimate reason for sending to more than two members.

ethanedwards December 4th, 2008, 04:44 AM Kevin,
When attempting to log on Social Groups showing this error.
Database Error
The JWMB - The Original John Wayne Message Board where fans come to have fun! database has encountered a problem.
Kevin December 4th, 2008, 05:26 PM wow, the database became corrupted overnight, and it took forever to do the repair on it. The size of the database that stores what we do here is huge!
Everything *should* be back to normal.
chester7777 December 4th, 2008, 10:12 PM All that matters is that you were able to fix it! I was going through JWMB withdrawals!!
Chester :newyear:
Hondo Duke Lane December 4th, 2008, 10:47 PM Glad that you were able to get it correct. What caused this problem?
Cheers
SXViper December 5th, 2008, 12:11 AM Guesss it was snice to be on a break. I didn't notice a thing!!!
dukefan1 December 5th, 2008, 08:46 AM I got that error message last night when I tried to visit. I just hit the refresh link and it loaded the site for me. Round a bout way to get in, but I did.
Mark
Jay J. Foraker December 5th, 2008, 12:12 PM I got the error message yesterday also. The refresh button didn't help. But I got back on today without a problem. Good thing - I was going through JWMB withdrawls like chester!
