View Full Version : New Releases of JW movies to DVD
Hondo Duke Lane February 15th, 2003, 08:13 PM Are There Any Duke Sites of Any DVD, etc. releases?
There are announcements of two Duke movies on April 28th on DVD. "Big Jake", and "Rio Lobo". It would be great if there was a site for Duke movie releases for our information.

baron von Rassilon February 16th, 2003, 02:52 AM Greetings!
New to the forum liked to say yo!
I have a list of John Wayne Movies announced to be released on DVD for this year so far:
Operation Pacific 5/13/03
Cahill: U.S. Marshall 6/3/03
Chisum 6/6/03
Big Jake 4/29/03
Rio Lobo 4/29/03
These dates are subject to change, but I find that they are pretty accurate.
This is the weebsite that I usually find release dates on DVD Price Search ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). THey have a new release list every few days. I hope this helps all of you!
On more thing, I really hate region codes on DVDs. Circus World & Back to Bataan has been released for European DVD players in French region 2 (I think) for a year now, and just a couple of months ago, Fort Apache has been released for England on Region 2.
Anyway, hav' a day!
baron von Rassilon March 9th, 2003, 02:56 AM :D More John Wayne movies have been announced for release on DVD!
The Big Trail 6/3/03
The Comancheros 6/3/03
North to Alaska (My fav!) 6/3/03
The Undefeated 6/3/03
I don't know about you, but I'm still waiting for "High and the Mighty" to be released on DVD in Widescreen. It shouldn't be to long, maybe within a year or two.
Well, I just bought "Flame of the Barbary Coast" on DVD. I've never seen this pic, so its time to get the popcorn and enjoy!
Take care!
baron von Rassilon February 8th, 2005, 02:05 AM I came across this today, "BLood Alley", "McQ", "Tall in the Saddle", "The Train Robbers", and "The Sea Chase" is to be released 05-03-2005! I hope this is some good news as these are some of my favorite movies! Here is the only thing I have on the news: DVD Price Search ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). This info will be up for roughly three days!
I'll see if there is any other confirmation (websites) on this. I hope this brings some new enjoyment for all of you! :jump:
erscolo March 31st, 2005, 10:06 PM I already have my preorder in for the set, and look forward to watching all five of them in May 2005.
Roger.
falc04 May 3rd, 2005, 02:22 PM Just picked up this box set at my local Sam's Club for only $32.47. Can't wait to sit down this weekend, and spend some time with the Duke!
General Sterling Price May 3rd, 2005, 02:28 PM Amazon has it for $35, so it looks like Sam's club is the better deal...

chester7777 May 4th, 2005, 02:19 AM I haven't had a chance to look for it at Costco yet, but I have to say that Sam's Club has Deep Discount DVD beat (that's rare).
Now if there was only a Sam's Club around here . . . .
Hondo Duke Lane May 5th, 2005, 01:33 AM What are you talking about, Chester? I ordered my DVD from DeepDiscountDVD and payed $29.95 for the box set and not pay any shipping. The only problem is that I haven't gotton the movies yet. I recieved an e-mail confirmation on Tuesday that the movie has been shipped, so I should get it by the weekend if not before.
I haven't seen anything beat that price.
Cheers B)
chester7777 May 5th, 2005, 03:14 AM Hondo,
Are we talking about the same set :fear2: ?? Check HERE ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
Maybe you got a special pre-release price or something.
Chester :newyear:
SXViper May 5th, 2005, 03:52 PM I was just at my local Sam's Club and the price they had was $35.47. That price that Hondo paid at DeepDVD was for a limited time only. You snooze, you loose. Oh and I lost as well.
Hondo Duke Lane May 6th, 2005, 10:01 PM Chester,
I made the order on March 31 and received a discount of $29.95 for the 5 disc set. If you do the figures, that's $5.99 a piece. I guess it was a pre order special. So, like my good buddy Viper said, if you snooze, you loose.
Cheers B)
chester7777 May 6th, 2005, 11:44 PM Hondo,

Hondo Duke Lane May 9th, 2005, 01:23 AM Got my movies yesterday, and they are great. Haven't seen all of them, but what I have seen will be a great set. Sorry that a lot of you didn't get on the $29.95 special value. Let's keep in touch on the special deals and not miss out again.
Cheers B)
erscolo May 12th, 2005, 12:50 AM Yes the $29.95 deal for the set of the five is a good deal. I've watched The Sea Chase and look forward to watching the other four films in DVD for the first time as well. I've seen and have them all on VHS, but the move up to DVD never hurts.
Roger.
Robhightower474 June 8th, 2006, 07:50 PM How about Swing Out Sweet Land on DVD
How about the long version of The Alamo????? with a bonus disc of supplements that include Spirit of The Alamo????
Spirit of the Alamo is one I would especially like a clean copy of. My VHS is very tough to watch. ...but I still put it on every once in awhile because it was so good. It has Jester singing Green Leaves of Summer and some choral moments with Dimitri Tiomkin.
What great music!
Anyway those are my top picks
...Just thought of another...
An uncut Cowboys that has scenes with the Indians and the Bear!

Rob - You might check out several of the topics on "The Alamo" which describes the situation with the uncut version of the film. As I understand it, at this point, the only way a DVD could be made would be to take a second generation from the directors cut VHS tape (or laserdisc) which, in all probability, would be self-defeating.
Cheers - Jay <_<
ejgreen77 June 9th, 2006, 12:07 PM Rob,
Jay is correct about The Alamo. In a nutshell, there was only one known copy of the Director's Cut of The Alamo in existence, and the fools at MGM destroyed it due to poor storage.
You can read the whole sickening story in these old threads:

WaynamoJim June 9th, 2006, 06:59 PM Fellas, you can get a DVD copy of The Alamo Directors Cut. If you check E-bay, you can get one from Singapore for about $6. I got one a couple of years ago and the picture quality is quite good and it's done in Dolby surround. The cover art is nothing to write home about and there are no extras on it and you have to flip it to watch the whole film. they don't even have the entrance, intermission and, exit music but, like I said, picture is quite good and it's better than no DVD version at all. Also, I've got a DVD recorder and I've tried to copy my VHS copy onto a DVD and it worked. I only did a few minutes on a DVD Ram and there were no glitches from any copy guard that might be on it. The only thing is, to get everything on there, you have to use maybe three discs. that is if you want the best picture quality you can have. A DVD recorder is like a vcr, you have the different speeds at 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours. The 1 hour is the best picture quality, 2 hour is excellent and probably the best way to go, the 4 hour is still pretty good and 8 hour would be ok. If some enterprising young lad wanted to, he could make a good DVD copy using 2 discs for the movie and 1 disc for the documentary. I might even try it myself.
ZS_Maverick November 3rd, 2006, 07:53 AM Hey yall,

ethanedwards November 3rd, 2006, 08:11 AM Hi,
This stunt has been pulled before,
and it just comes across as a scam.
Unknowing fans will be purchasing these 'new' titles,
unaware, that they probably have them in their collections,
already!!!
From the runtime, it looks highly likely
that they are Lone Star re-works.
falc04 November 3rd, 2006, 01:41 PM I use to own the old 1980s colorized Lone Star films on VHS. They looked great (it was fun to see such a young John Wayne in color), but the soundtrack was way off. All the actor's voices were high-pitched and sped up. Definitely took away from some of the fun.
I would like to pruchase these 3 upcoming films, if they are not duplicates of the 1980 releases, and if they are not those 20 minute edited ones that are already out on DVD. Guess I will just wait to read some reviews of them, before plunking down the $22.
ZS_Maverick November 3rd, 2006, 06:34 PM Yep, I looked up the DVD title on another sight. They are Lone Star Westerns. This is the info I got on that sight about what's on the DVD

General Sterling Price November 8th, 2006, 12:52 PM I am surprised to hear that they invested in colorizing the old LoneStars. My favorite colorization job is Tall in the Saddle. Turned out pretty good.

It sounds like these are the same films colorized in 1990 by Color Systems Technology and released on home video under their original titles, later with different titles under The Young Duke banner. The titles here are different, though: Blue Steel was Bandits of the Badlands; The Lucky Texan was Cowboy G-Man; and Sagebrush Trail was The Fugitive.
It's too bad Wayne's Lone Star westerns ended up in the public domain: If the copyrights were renewed we would have beautiful, unmodified prints available on DVD. Instead, they're hacked (editing, music, colorization) so that the new versions can be re-copyrighted.
Anyone who wants to see how nice these prints can look should check out the 2-disc Columbia Pictures DVD collection called Riding the Range Vols. 1 and 2. There's new music and editing, though, which I deplore. But the print quality is lovely (some better than others), sourced from either the original or early re-issue film elements owned by NTA. The DVDs also benefit from high-quality encoding. But had the films been released unmodified, bootleg copies probably would have flooded the public domain market.
I wonder if the colorized versions by CST used the same prints as the earlier black-and-whites released by Columbia? I'll poke my ever-curious nose into the answer.

I have several of these, and whilst the colour versions
are interesting, they're also pretty lousy.
They appear to use the same print,
and some of the original sound track, and some from the
Second Sight releases
The worst thing however is Duke's voice,
what an earth have they done to it,
badly dubbed or what!!
How they can get Duke to sound like that,
when Yakima Canutt and the others sound normal,
baffles me!!!
arthurarnell November 9th, 2006, 02:32 PM Hi Kieth
I agree with you they were cheap and cheerful and I only bought a couple . I don't know who dubbed Waynes voice but I am convinced that it was dubbed and badly luckilly late night television screened the originals at about 2 in the morning and with the wonders of video I managed to tape the lot.
Of course these are now redundant with the DVD collections that are coming out.

ethanedwards November 9th, 2006, 04:40 PM Hi Arthur, Todd, Rough Rider,
Arthur you took me back a few years, as I remember,
the Lone Star Westerns being screened on C4
about 8 years ago.
I will always remember like you, the VHS was ready and poised to record,
when we noticed the dog, was outside and had gone A.W.O.L.
I was so annoyed I missed setting the VHS. to record
Riders of Destiny
They of course, were the Second Sight series.
Arthur,
In answer to your question,
I am in constant touch with
David and Patrick at
The John Wayne Film Society,
and do indeed, have some of their
'Special' releases.
Generally they're pretty good, seem to be copies
of prints, obviously without,
digital re-mastering.
Shootout at Rio Lobo
I thought was very good, very entertaining,
and very amusing.
Quality fair, and acceptable
Life of Jimmy Dolan
Wyoming Outlaw
Salute
Glen Campbell Special
Salute
Arizona
Don't have these yet, but the quality
from experience, is similar to that an old cine film!
I have ordered, all but the
Glen Campbell one.
Maker of Men
I have the NTSC version,
which I purchased through the JWFS
Rookie of the Year
Fashing Spikes
I have both these from the JWFS.
They're fun, and interesting.
Quality wise,
as if they had been recorded off the TV.!!
but well worth having.

They of course, were the Second Sight series.
What is the Second Sight series, Keith? It sounds like the British video distributor, who I'll guess had UK rights to the colorized Lone Star productions.
I've been poking my nose into John Wayne's colorized films and come up with 36 titles (excluding the Lone Stars that were re-titled and condensed to 20 minutes). Two of the Lone Stars weren't colorized: Texas Terror and Rainbow Valley. I think a few of the 1940s films were released to television only and not available on home video. But I've confirmed that all those listed below have been colorized.
If anyone sees an omission, let me know.
Riders of Destiny
Sagebrush Trail
The Lucky Texan
West of the Divide
Blue Steel
The Man from Utah
Randy Rides Alone
The Star Packer
The Trail Beyond
The Lawless Frontier
'Neath Arizona Skies
The Desert Trail
The Dawn Rider
Paradise Canyon
Winds of the Wasteland
Allegheny Uprising
Dark Command
Three Faces West
Lady from Louisiana
In Old California
Flying Tigers
A Lady Takes a Chance
War of the Wildcats
The Fighting Seabees
Tall in the Saddle
Flame of Barbary Coast
Back to Bataan
Dakota
They Were Expendable
Angel and the Badman
Fort Apache
Wake of the Red Witch
The Fighting Kentuckian
Sands of Iwo Jima
Rio Grande
The Longest Day

ethanedwards November 10th, 2006, 10:30 AM Hi Rough Rider,
They Lone Star Movies,
Were released as Fox/Lorber,
and I guess, were distributed here by
Second Sight.
[ATTACH]1030]
In the case of Rainbow Valley,
that was always the odd one out,
and that was the only one, not Fox,
and or distributed by Second Sight.
I have a feeling the rights to that one,
were owned by someone totally different.
Rainbow Valley, also contains
more of the original, orchestrated soundtrack,
and not the sync, stuff that was dubbed on the others!
arthurarnell November 10th, 2006, 02:02 PM Hi
I bought those a year or so back they were about three for a fiver and not bad. I also bought The Three Musketeers in Tescos two volumes at a pound each.
I have Rookie of The Year on VHS bought from the John Wayne film Society and video copies of Maker of Men. The life of Jimmy Dolan I copied when it was shown on television a couple of years ago but I will buy it because I am collecting the DVDs. Arizona I have on video Likewise Shootout at Rio Lobo.
Salute was given to me by an acquaintance in Canada, and from that I acquired a copy on a computer disc, but again I will probably buy a DVD from the JW Society.
I have on various occasions advertised the Society and would repeat that it is NOT restricted to British people only. It is very cheap to join and become a member and they have deals that are quite good. It may be worth visiting their site.

RoughRider November 10th, 2006, 05:49 PM OK, I see, Keith. So the b&w Fox/Lorber titles were released in the UK by Second Sight. And 15 of them instead of the five that were released on DVD in North America by Columbia (Sony). Although I don't care for the modifications, generally I like the print quality--I've only seen five--so I'll obtain these from the UK. Maybe the 10 other titles were released on DVD over here, but I haven't found them; but all 15 were released on VHS by Columbia. Thanks for the insight -- I didn't know Second Sight released the Fox/Lorber Lone Stars on DVD.
As to why Rainbow Valley was excluded, I don't know for sure. It was either a rights issue or the prints in existence weren't good enough. It wasn't colorized, and I know that process requires high-quality film elements. Mind you, Texas Terror wasn't colorized either but there's a Fox/Lorber version.

I found more recent information about the John Wayne in Color set.
The three included films have state of the art colorization by Legend Films. Also included are the black and white originals, a policy Legend adheres to for all its product.
Visit Legend Films ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) to see samples of their work and much interesting reading about their digital process. The films are done to such a high resolution that they can strike 35mm prints.

I believe you're mistaken about it being released in Region 1, Arthur. The "Barbarian and the Geisha" is one of my favorite JW movies and believe me, I'd be snapping it up if it had been released over here.
BTW, if a cousin across the pond would be kind enough to procure a Region 2 release and mail it to me, I'd be forever grateful. I'd also reimburse you for all costs. (Keith (Ethan) did this for me once before and it worked out well).
Lt. Brannigan March 10th, 2008, 02:16 PM Ah, I see that I am not mistaken at all now. Cause like Stumpy said 'twere it on DVD we'd own it. At first though I have to admit that I thought I was slipping.

Yeah, we found it "used and new" on Amazon, starting at around $24, as described above by Lt. Brannigan. FWIW, my first copy of Three Godfathers was in Portuguese, with the cover and DVD menu in Portuguese, but we could figure it out enough to play it in English.

SXViper January 2nd, 2009, 01:30 AM Just going over some of my movie website's that post info on upcoming DVD releases and I come across this that was posted by the guys over at The Digital Bits :
There are some rumors surfacing that MGM will release the complete director's cut of John Wayne's The Alamo (as previously available only on the special edition laserdisc) by mid-2009. This would be a delightful release for the film's devoted fans, so let's hope there's some truth to it, especially if a Blu-ray version is also in the works.
Let's keep our finger's crossed!!!!
Hondo Duke Lane January 2nd, 2009, 01:46 AM That's great Todd. It would be great to see that movie released in its complete from.
Is there any other news of other Duke movies being released? These are the movies that have not been released prior to 1939.
Wheel Of Fortune
Lady From Louisiana
Lady For A Night
War Of The Wildcats
The Barbarian And The Geisha
Circus World
I Married A Woman (a cameo appearance)

Taka,
These are movies in Region 1. I'm not sure what is your region, and what movies are released. But I will be glad to see about it. What region are you in?
Cheers  Hondo
SXViper January 6th, 2009, 01:41 AM I believe that region 2 is Japan Mike.
H.sanada January 6th, 2009, 07:56 AM I believe that region 2 is Japan Mike.
SxViper is right.
It explains the region code of DVD to make sure though it is thought what you know.
From Wikipedia, DVD discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played.
The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region.
the purpose of this is to allow motion pictures studios to control aspects
of a release,including content,release date,and,especially,price,according to the region.
region code 1s area is U.S. territories,Canada ,Bermuda.
and code 2 's area is Western and central Europe and Japan,U.K. French.
But, about Blu-ray Disc is different.
In region for Blu-ray standard, area of region A is America and East Asia.
Happily Japan and U.S.A. has the same code. waoh,Idon't have Blu-ray disc.:cry2:
regards.
Taka
