Hey!

Does anyone know what The Duke's favorite foods were? (I did a search but was surprised to find zip on the subject!) It seems he enjoyed steak, potatoes, and candy! I think he detested avocado. Please course-correct here if you know different!

Someone gave me a batch of old recipes, and in them I found this one:

JOHN WAYNE CHEESE CASSEROLE

2 cans (4 oz.) green chiles, chopped and drained
1 lb. Monterey Jack cheese, grated
1 lb. Cheddar cheese, grated
4 eggs, separated
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
2 tomatoes, sliced

Combine cheeses and chiles. Put into 2 quart casserole. In large bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. In small bowl, combine egg yolks, milk, flour, salt and pepper. Beat until well blended. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold beaten egg whites into egg yolk mixture. Pour over cheeses in casserole. Using a fork, "ooze" egg mixture through cheeses. Bake 30 minutes at 325°. Put tomato slices around edge and bake 30 minutes more until knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Serves 6-8.

Underneath is the name of the person who contributed it: Sue Henry. I don't know this person.

Anybody heard of this being something JW liked? Or of the contributor? Who knows, the title of the recipe could just be invented, but I wonder.

If anyone tries cooking this up, please share the results!

Thanks,

Kcat

The above foods sound fantastic to me. Sadly though, I can't have anything like those for months to come--Grrrrrr.

I wonder if Duke was alsoa fan of Breakfast Taquitos? The sky is the limit when it comes to what one can make those out of. Some of my favorites include: Bacon, Eggs and CHeese, Potato, and ege and cheese, Carne Gusada (SP?) refried beans to any of these as a base, and also included with Sausage, egg and cheese.

I've also made these using Turkey Pot Pie. First you cook one of those .50 cent pot pies, then place the entire thing on a large flour tortillia, wrap it and eat it. Samething goes for placeing a slice of Meatloaf in a flour tortillia.

A few other things I favor in flour tortillias include, three thin slices of Land O'Lakes Turkey or Chicken or Ham lunchmeat, placed over 1 slice of American Cheese. Toss into the oven at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes-and MMmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmm, that's some good eatings.

I wonder if Duke also liked Enchaladas? I sure do. I like these with refried beans and rice as sides. I mix the beans andrice together-which makes it easier to eat, and then I take some of the melted chili and cheese from the enchiladas and mix that in w/ the rice and beans. Then I top that off with a nice helping of hot sauce and mix that in.

I think im now going to quit thinking about solid foods--this is pure torture for me. I still have 8 days to go-before I can start eating eggs.

Thank you Bill! These look as tasty as everything else! Do you do lots of cooking yourself? Have you heard of the Cheese Casserole above being something Duke liked?

Thanks!

Sounds like the "John Wayne Cheese Casserole" above would be right up your alley, Ringo Kid! Once you get back in the saddle with solid food, that is! If you try it, let us know the results!

Be well,

I have been Cooking from about the time I was 5 years old, because my old Texas Grandmother that came to Arizona from West Texas in a Wagon as a Young Girl over 100 years ago, wanted to make sure I knew how to Cook when I was old enough to start Hunting and Fishing with the Big Boys, and that was when I was 8 or 9 Years old. I am now 78 years old.
:yeaahh:
I had to teach my Wife how to Cook, because She was the Youngest of 13 Children and the older Sisters did all the Cooking . Then She became a Better Cook than I !!!

Hi KCat, I most definately will. My mouth's watering at the thoughts of tasting different flavors other than that of water, jello, EAS shakes and stuff with Whey Protein in it. Two weeks down and one more to go-as soon as Saturday comes around that is ;-))

I know as soon as I can start eating scrambled eggs, that I will be eating lots of them as wellas skinless fruits.
