View Full Version : John Wayne as a Confederate s_sandwichh February 14th, 2003, 02:48 PM How many times and in what movies was Wayne a Confederate, and an ex Confederate? Thanks. Idaho February 14th, 2003, 04:14 PM That's a great question. I know that he was an ex-confederate in True Grit in which he got his only academy award, and also the sequel Rooster Cogburn and the lady. I hope some more fans can help out with this one. regards, Idaho dukefan1 February 14th, 2003, 05:37 PM Duke was also an ex- Confederate soldier in the movie "The Searchers". Mark Hondo Duke Lane February 15th, 2003, 10:10 AM He was made to wear a confederate uniform in "Rio Lobo" while taken prisoner. He was a union soldier. Hondo chester7777 February 15th, 2003, 02:50 PM Idaho, Just curious . . . what makes you think he was an ex-Confederate in "True Grit"? We just watched it, and didn't see anything very conclusive, but we might have missed it. Thanks for your time. Chester Ethan February 18th, 2003, 10:48 AM He was by his own admission a confederate. If you watched the scene where he is talking to Kim Darby, while waiting on the hill he admits to losing his eye "at the Lone Jack, a little scrap outside of Kansas City". Also when La Bouef, Mattie and Rooster are bringing in the dead outlaws to McAlesters, he gets into a quarrel with La Bouef about his insults of Captain Quantrille. A known confederate guerilla, with whom Rooster rode. Don,t understand how you miss this unless your watching the TIME COMPRESSED version on AMC, of which they cut out this scene !!! Regards Ethan Idaho February 18th, 2003, 01:17 PM Chester, Also in Rooster Cogburn nd the lady when in which the duke plays the same character as in True Grit, Rooster and Katherine Hepburn are discussing "the late war between the states" Rooster is getting defensive about her comments about General Lee (the confederate general) and she says in reply "he was soundly whipped in the field by yankees" and she rides away from him. My dialogue might not be precise because it's been a while since I watched that one but the scene was to that effect. Thanks Idaho swede116 February 18th, 2003, 03:08 PM Dukes cat in "True Grit" was called General Sterling Price; a Confederate and former Governor of Missouri. I don't think a Unionist would give his pet the name of a Confederate General! Swede Hondo Duke Lane February 18th, 2003, 08:31 PM :o Well, I had to go way back to November 3, 1936 to find one with Duke as an ex-confererate in Texas who is helping the governor of Texas to rid the state of Carpetbaggers. The movie is "The Lonely Trail". Hondo chester7777 February 19th, 2003, 01:13 AM Ethan and Swede, We saw the dialogue you mentioned, but not being Civil War buffs, didn't understand the significance. Idaho, Just tonight we rented Rooster Cogburn (haven't seen it for awhile - thanks for reminding us that we need to buy it :D ). So we'll be checking it out in the next day or so. Thanks, all, for filling us in. Chester BrianB July 3rd, 2003, 11:06 PM Maybe more than we think, Texas was part of the south.....so the roles he played as a texas ranger might be included. Just a thought. Brian Tulalip Wa |
