Chester
I wanted to make you guys aware of a fun new feature that became available with the recent software upgrade to the message board.

It is called "Social Groups" and is kind of a combination of a message board within a message board and a permanent chat.

Each member has the ability to set one (or more) up.

1. Go to your User CP (Control Panel)

2. Look in the column along the left side, and look for the Networking section.

3. Click on "Social Groups." What comes up next is a listing of existing groups. Below that list (which only contains one right now), in the bottom bar, is a clickable option, "Create a New Group."

4. When you click that, a new screen comes up.

5. Here, you have the ability to give your group a name (JW Fans from California, for example), a description, and a type (Public, Moderated, Invite Only).

6. Below that are three check boxes - Enable Albums, Enable Messages, and "Users must join to view the content." The first two are checked as a default value.

As near as I can tell, you don't have the ability to have different threads within the group, but you can maintain a running conversation over time (kind of like a chat room with longevity), and easier to follow than a series of PMs. This would be a great place to follow up on some topic that is not really germaine to our purpose, but which some members would like to pursue. It's especially nice for those who are in such different time zones that a real-time chat is not feasible, but has the same continuity of a thread or chat.

I hope that made sense, and that some of you will have fun with it!

Chester

I have lifted Chester's post(and I hope he doesn't mind) ,
from the Board Changes, and thought it warranted a seperate thread.

Since the inception of Social Groups,
we started a European Members Social Group,
which has proved very popular.

Particularly as Chester pointed out,

. This would be a great place to follow up on some topic that is not really germaine to our purpose, but which some members would like to pursue. It's especially nice for those who are in such different time zones that a real-time chat is not feasible, but has the same continuity of a thread or chat.

Perhaps some of our other members might also find it kinda fun,
to form their own SG, say Japan, or Australia, California who wherever!

It's easy to do, just follow Chester's instructions

Hi Keith

As a member of the european group its nice to be able to "nip in and out" of these running conversations and still keep up with whats going on.

Hope I will not be limited to only being able to be part of this group? As I see it is invite only. As new groups open up hope I might be able to "nip in and out" of those also.

Hi Elly,
Originally, I had it open as Public,
but found one or two non posting members inviting themselves!!
As I do not know who these members are, (and they could be anyone),
I decided to close it, and make it invite only.
Only a few minutes ago, I invited one of our members in
Spain to join us.
I am constantly looking at our SG
and will invite folk accordingly.

Thanks for your support and look forward to the Bulgaria SG!!

Hi Keith

the Bulgarian SG would be very exclusive!

we only have one member in this country so I would be talking to myself

Some of you may have noticed,
that the 'Quick Links' menu keeps vanishing.

or from your profile.

We are currently trying to solve the 'Quick Links' problem.

Not at all! Thanks, Keith, for making this feature more accessible to our members in this way.

And don't forget, Elly, you are always free to start one yourself. As Keith pointed out, you may decide (as creator of a group) to make it open to all, or invite-only, as you deem appropriate.

I have to say, I got a good laugh out this last little exchange! You are so right, Arthur! Certainly, Elly would be part of a most intelligent exchange .

Hi Chester and Arthur

what with keeping track of my subscribed threads, PMs, Visitor messages and the group I belong to, I have no time to start another group.

Especially as i have to edit nearly all my posts due to my atrocious spelling!

Have just noticed the spell checker DUH! what were you saying about intelligent, you want to retract that

I posted this on the Politics thread,
and believe its an idea worth considering!
You know looking at this thread,
it would be easier for all joining in here,
to form a Social Group,
which would enable you all, to have an ongoing converstation.
It could be called whatever you wish, and be invitation only,
but it would certainly open the conversation up.

To be honest, we cannot understand what happens to it.
Kevin is constantly working on the problem,
and as yet we cannot work it out!

Stumpy, The Ringo Kid and myself were
discussing certain isssues, which I considered out of place
on our public forum, so I have since formed the:-

UK/US Social Group (http://www.dukewayne.com/group.php?groupid=7)
Discuss, what each over thinks about
our constitutions and way of life.

Feel free to join in.

As I get somewhat passionate about certain things, im glad to have a place for it where I don't insert my foot to far into my mouth for all to see. ;-))

Don't forget to check out and join our groups.
They are a great way to exchange talk,
(like in a chat, but easier than PM's)
with members who share the same views.

Latest Social Group Posts

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the addition of the sub-forum
for the social groups.

Is there a possibility that the order they are shown,
reflects the order of the SG's that have the latest posts,
rather than now, where the list showing,
includes SG's that haven't had posts for ages!

I checked and there isn't an option for sorting. I'll check around and see if I can find another mod with more options.

I'm looking for a Notification system for the social groups. I would also like to know about new social group posts, in the same way as PM, etc.

Yes, anything to make members aware!!
For example some posters
didn't know for days, that there had
been posted replies!

Okay, I completed the upgrade, and it changed the social group section a little. I have installed a social group notification, and added the social group list on the main forum view page.

I'm trying to get the messages to sort from newest to oldest in the social group area.

I like being able to simply scroll down on the main forum page and see if there are any new posts in my social groups!

I was accustomed to seeing the newest posts at the top - any progress in getting it to re-sort in that way? If not, it's not really a big deal, I'll just "readjust."
