Hi All

I am planning to buy my parents a DVD player/recorder for Christmas and I was hoping I could get some advice here. I did some shopping around and found the following:

Sony - RDR-HXD890 - £230
Samsung - SH871M - £210
RDR GX 890- £229
Philips - 5500 - £150

I also had a guy offer me an 'Acoustic solutions dvdrw 300' for around £30.

What do you guys know about the above DVD recorders, are they value for money? The people I am buying for do not have Sky, I am particularly interested to know if these recorders will be compatible when the digital switch-over happens in the UK and if the new 'blue ray disk' will make these DVD recorders obsolete?

Thanks in advance

I have had a Phillips DVR for a couple of years now & it records great; however, it is extremely complicated to operate. I've had numerous recorders over the years & have never had any problem learning how to use them. This Phillips is a whole 'nother beast!

I have a Sony DVD Recorder. It is straight forward to operate compared to earlier Samsung.

My model wont play Region 1 DVDs but I have a Region 1 player for those occasions.

Play.com have your Sony model silver & black for £200.00 post free.
