View Full Version : King Of The Pecos
chester7777 August 27th, 2003, 02:10 AM We don't know if this is an official release or not, but tonight I was in a nearby electronics store (Fry's, if anybody is familiar with it), and they had about a 200 feet long by 7 feet high area full of DVDs for sale, and among them I found several copies of the 1936 John Wayne movie The King of the Pecos for $9.99 (BTW, only $9.96 at DeepDiscountDVD.com, and FREE shipping and NO sales tax). This is a title I have never seen available before, and I can assure you, I have looked in many places and seen many JW titles for sale. In checking IMDb, only 2 people saw fit to comment on it, and one was somewhat negative and the other positive, and a total of 17 people voted on it, giving it an overall rating of 4.2 out of 10.
I was wondering, have any of you seen it? Do I want to buy it? I know, it's John Wayne, and that should be enough, but is it any good?
Thanks for your input!
Chester :D
baron von Rassilon August 27th, 2003, 08:16 AM Good Morning Chester! -_-
I don't know what one you have seen, but my King of the Pecos was distributed by Artisan. It's part of the John Wayne Collection and has some purple heading. I also purchased it for $9.95 at Best Buy. I've had mine about a year now. It was released last summer. Mine has: Fullscreen Version, English 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio, Digitally Mastered, Scence Access, and Interactive Menus.

Is this the one you are talking about? This is the one I have.
As for quality, well Artisan produces fair DVDs. The transfer and sound is ok. After all, there is so much you can do with a really old movie. They don't usually fix really bad problems with a movie, like torn film or scratches. But they do have some of the best prices. I don't think you'll find a better release of this movie by anyone else. I don't have a lot of complaints about the DVD myself.
One thing I found, Artisan has Republic Pictures listed in their website as part of their release group. They are releasing all RP movies on DVD. So maybe soon they will have a few more John Wayne titles soon.
Hondo Duke Lane August 27th, 2003, 10:32 PM Baron,
Artisan is the officially distributor for Republic Pictures. I posted eariler that I didn't know who did, but found out they do, and are the ones who will put out any information on any Republic Pictures release. King of the Pecos is a release of Republic Pictures. And the quality is what they put into it. I'd say with the price, they do not put too much inot their restoration. But the movie is fun to see with Duke.
Haven't seen King of the Pecos. Happy watching.
Cheers, Hondo B)
baron von Rassilon August 27th, 2003, 11:07 PM I just watched King of the Pecos. The quality is pretty good, so is the sound. I would recommend it for the John Wayne collection. Artistan isn't too bad, for their price. The only JW movie I was disapointed with the restoration was The Horse Soldiers. In on clip, the film looked like it had been torn. Nothing was done to repair the damage when transfered to DVD.
chester7777 August 28th, 2003, 12:38 AM Baron,
The one you picture in your post is exactly the one I was looking at.
All these glowing reviews, and knowing that it is appropriately distributed by the rightful folks makes me think I'll just have to get one, or perhaps, I'll have Deep Discount deliver one to my door (FREE shipping!).

Hondo Duke Lane August 28th, 2003, 11:20 PM Chester,
Are you talking about on line ordering with DeepDiscountDVD.com? They have some of the lowest prices on line and off line, and usually when you preorder a movie before release most of the time you get it before it gets to Wal-Mart, or Target. Best of all it comes to your front door.
I think King of the Pecos is about $9.96 total. That's a great price. Thanks for the information.
Cheers, Hondo B)

Hondo,
You mean deepdiscountdvd.com, where King of the Pecos is only $9.96, with FREE shipping? That deepdiscountdvd.com??
Did I mention that I have stock in that company?? :agent:
JUST KIDDING! I don't own stock and I am not employeed by them in any way, and not even a shill for them! But I do like low prices, and love to share those sources with everyone I know ( . . . anyone ever heard of Grocery Outlet . . . ?).
How about you, Hondo . . . B) ?
Chester :cowboy:
Hondo Duke Lane August 29th, 2003, 10:24 PM You mean that there is a grocery outlet? Never knew that, what will they think of next. Maybe superstores, that have everythink you can think of. And stay open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? <_<
Whatch think, Chester? Maybe, maybe!

chester7777 August 31st, 2003, 01:53 AM Hondo,
On the "left" side of the country, there actually is a chain of stores called Grocery Outlet. It's one of my favorites - I do love  a bargain, and it's like going to a garage sale for food. Great savings, and stuff besides food at good prices too (no, we don't own stock here either) B) . My wife says she will never buy sun screen any place else any more ($7.99 anyplace else, she gets it there for $2.49). Limited selection, but fun shopping (another thing the Mrs. and I do together :D ). I confess, I have never found anything JW there, though :( .
BTW, where did you get that great quote? I want one like that, too!

arthurarnell February 2nd, 2005, 11:42 AM Hi
Help, Help Help
In the work I'm doing It is my intention to put a picture from a John Wayne film beginning with the letter of each section that I am working on. Thus section A has a large picture from the Alamo, Section B The Big Trail H has as its introduction a large picture of Hondo ,and so on.
Section K is slightly awkward as the only picture that John Wayne made begining with K was King of the Pecos and I haven't got a picture from the film. I have the poster but I wanted to avoid using posters if at all possble.
I thought an easy way to get round it would be to show a picture of the Three Mesqiteers until I realised the Fly in the buttermilk was the Three Mesquiteers 'aint' in the picture.
So please if anyone has a print/ photograph or anything from King of the Pecos and would be prepared to let me take a copy I would be very grateful. All credit will be given to the donor, and you will be saving me a headache
Hope to hear from you soon
Regards
Arthur
itdo February 3rd, 2005, 02:15 AM I think I have a nice candid shot, with Duke and the kid in the movie, looking directly in the camera - I believe it's King of the Pecos. How should we do it? Shall I scan it and mail it to you so you can take a look?
Anybody else has something, I'm sure Arthur is looking for more than just one choice.
arthurarnell February 3rd, 2005, 03:11 AM Hi Roland
That sounds brilliant thank you.
Regards
Arthur
