This is kindof a funny question, but have you ever noticed that John Wayne ends up in the water a lot? I think a lot of his movies he gets a bucket of water thrown on him or ends up in the water! Can anyone tell me how many movies he ends up getting wet?

I can think of a few like;

Sons of Katie Elder
Rooster Cogburn
The Quiet Man
North to Alaska
Donovan's Reef

I know this is a funny question, but watching his movies the other day, I started wondering about this!

Hi Stacy

Great question

Red River (The indian attack)
Searchers (Indian attack)
El Dorado (He rides through water, at the start he can be seen washing himself)
Shootist (In the bath)
Angel And The Badman (Cabot attack)

Thats all I can think of now

He did seem to have alot of water thrown at him or pushed into it. I could only think of the same ones that you listed. I'll be sure to let ya know if I come up with any others.

What a funny  question! I have to admitt that I never thought about that before. Well here goes:

McLintock! - if you include mud, which is watery dirt.
Rio Lobo
The Horse Soldiers
Comancheros - rain falling on him, which is water.
Wake of the Red Witch - The hurricane of course

Ha! Funny question! Well, in They Were Expendable he gets wet a couple of times. Not surprising, though, for a navy man on a PT boat.

He certainly could have stood getting wet in The Three Godfathers. He does mention when they get to Terrapin Tanks (IIRC) that he's going to strip down to nothing and take a swim. That's before he realizes that Ward Bond is there waiting for him.

Seems like it was often feast or famine for Duke when it came to water. ;)

Stacy here are a few more

He takes a shower in "Big Jake".
He dips his head in a handbasin full of water in "Flame Of The Barbarry Coast".
Reap the Wild Wind he goes underwater the suit leaked and apparently Duke got an ear infection.
He gets wet in Operation Pacific.
He talks about wanting a shower in Brannigan does that count...only joking. :D

In Hatari!, Pockets (Red Buttons) drives the truck through a creek while JW is sitting on the fender. He gets wet there and yells," Someday Pockets, someday!".

Tycoon, he finishes the brigde during a Hurricane and gets wet.

Blood Alley while steering the steamer during a monsoon.

Circus World when the ship overturns and he swims back to shore.

Island in the Sky if you count that he's covered in snow. <_<

That's all I can think of right now.

Hey Baron,

I have never heard of Island In The Sky, is it a good movie? How old is it? And yea I guess you would get wet if you were covered with snow! Please let me know about that movie, thanks.

I have not seen Circus World but once, can you get either one of these movies on tape? I have heard that Circus World is not his best, but I would like to see it again.

Thanks for replying to my question!

So lets see guys how many movies it that already?
I count 23, is that right?
If not, I have an excuse, math was my worst subject in school! HA HA HA

Stacy!

Island In the Sky is a very hard movie to get a hold of. If you find an original copy, it will cost you lots! Anyway, it isn't an action adventure, it's pure drama. He plays a pilot (Dooley), that had to land in snow covered country in the middle of nowhere due to engine trouble. Think very north Alaska. He is trying to keep his men alive while he awaits being rescued. They have no food, no water, and it's 20- below zero. Their radio is almost out of electricity so they have to conserve it. Other pilots are looking for him and his crew and time is running out!

Here is a lobby card image from the movie.

Circus World , is where JW is Matt Masterson, an owner of a circus. The circus is a little bit more like a wild west show. They go to Europe to tour there. While at port an accident happens that the ship over turns. Losing most of their circus, they put together what they can tok have a show. During this time, Matt is looking for an old flame that is the mother of his adopted daughter who is also a performer. The young girl's father had died in an highwire fall and Matt was involved with her mother at the time.
It is not one of the favorites among the John Wayne fans. You can find a used video just about anywhere. I got mine at a fleamarket for $3.00. I watch it every once and awhile.

I hope this helps. :)

Stacy here are another three in which he does get wet in.

Rio Bravo - Water poured on him to make him concious again.
McQ - At the end in the sea.
Brannigan - When the hitman attacks his hotel and its raining he goes out to see if Jenny is alright.
Red River - Durring the drive there is a heavy rain storm.
Undefeated - Heavy rain at the start.

Now I come to think of it there are very few movies in which he does not get wet in.

Baron,

Thanks for the synopsis of the two movies. Right now there is no release of the Island in the Sky on any format, as for Circus World, it is widely released on VHS, and limited on DVD in a very expensive rate. Do you have a copy of Island in your collection or have you seen it. I haven't ever seen it, or even sure if I had the chance to get to see it. I wasn't born when the movie came out, and not even sure it was ever rereleased.

The price I saw for Circus is around $90.00 U.S. dollars on DVD. I agree that Circus World was not a particularly good movie, and I did like it alright, but I wouldn't pay that much for that movie. I'm not sure if I'd pay that for my favorite movie, but again, I don't have to, so I would think that I wouldn't either.

Let's see, Stacy, any other movie with WATER.

- The Wings of Eagles - where Spig Wead goes into a swimming pool with a broken up plane.

- Hellfighters - Chance Buckman is in the water with Greg Parker putting out a fire in a poison well, and he is trying to get Greg of trouble from a problem.

Cheers, Hondo B)

Mike

I can't believe it $90 for a movie that is complete madness who do these people think they are by chargeing people these ridiculas prices. All I can say is sit tight the movie is likely to be released for a much more reasonable price.

Thanks Baron of the information on the two movies I asked you about!
Know that I have seen a picture of Island In The Sky, I think I have seen it, but if I did it has been a long time ago.

Circus World I know I have seen, but only once.

I can not believe that much money for a movie. Must be a collector huh?

So know that we have had a few more movies listed, what does that bring the total to? I had thought John Wayne gets wet a lot in movies! HA HA HA HA

Thanks Gang!

I agree with Robbie, Good things come to those who wait! ;)

Not to be bragging, but I just got my weekly dose of searching for DVDs, and got Lady Takes a Chance at DeepDiscountDVD.com (under $10, and FREE shipping), and the VHS of Shepherd of the Hills and a used paperback of the same title, both at Amazon.com.

BTW, I come up with a count from everybody's posts so far of JW getting wet in 32 movies.

And here's another one (Hondo, I can't believe you didn't mention this one . . . ) - how about in Hondo, when he's brought back by the Indians, and it's pouring rain, and they dump him at Angie's front door. So now, we have 33 . . ..

Hondo, my movie "Island in the Sky" is on VHS. I bought it on Ebay for $45. It's a copy of a copy actually. I decided to keep it as the rarity of the movie. I have however seen the movie on television when I about 13, when it play on the late late show. Here is a link to my collection of John Wayne movies. Even the it says it's been updated, it isn't. I have to add the older titles soon. Baron's John Wayne Movie Collection (http://www.angelfire.com/zine/timetraveler/johnwaynemovies.html)

The only DVD copies of "Circus World" I have seen are region 2 version sold in France (Le Plus Cirque Du Monde is the title), Hong Kong region 0, and region 4 in Austrailia. I shy away from Hong Kong movies as I have heard they are bootleg and not of high quality. A few months ago, a internet store called Suncoast had it listed for sale as part of the John Wayne Collection. They have since removed it from the listing.

I just purchased "Rooster Cogburn" on DVD. I not sure if it is mentioned here but Wayne gets a bit wet rafting there.

Chester7777, I am hoping that "Shepard of the Hills" will make its appearance soon on DVD. It's a good movie to watch.

I wonder when the powers that be will give release notices on John Wayne movies for the Christmas sales?? I want to know what coming out!

hi baron,

i don't know about your zone but down here we can still get McQ & Big Jim McLain on vhs with a bit of searching and in the dvd's we can get frontier horizon, hell town, westward ho, desert trail, texas terror, neath arizona skies, blue steel, west of the divides, all the dvd's are straight copies from the movies and you have to just go with the flow with the quality but we can get them as i have over the last few weeks. hope that they rerelease them in your zone for christmas so that you can enlarge your collection.

smokey, hope you are doing great!

Yeah, McQ & Big Jim Mclain are out of print videos here. But with some searching they can be found. I kinda take it easy on buying VHS unless the price is just right. I hate to buy a VHS and then find that movie came out on DVD two months later. That happened with me on "North to Alaska". Right now I'm just waiting before I buy as the Christmas DVD releases are coming up. I'm expecting at least 4 or 6 new John Wayne titles to appear. Artistan should release 1 or 2 old Republic titles, then maybe Warner or Paramount will release a couple. My guess is (or at least I wish they would release):From Artistan, "Allegeny Uprising" & "Shepard of the Hills". From other studios I hope it's: "The Wings of Eagles", "Hondo", The Three Godfathers", and "Blood Alley". But we shall see, won't we?

In 'Cahill' Duke has to walk across a river and doesnt he get wet in 'Stagecoach' durring the scene where they attach two logs to the Stagecoach to help it float across the river.

Well, we just watched Lady from Louisiana tonight, which I hadn't seen before (this is a VHS I had picked up for a dollar at a rummage sale a few months back, and boy oh boy, was there a bunch of water at the end of that movie! The Duke gets soaked from the rain!

So according to my count, including the two Robbie added today and mine just now, we are up to 36 movies in which the Duke gets wet.

This is kind of fun to watch for.

wayne duke,

Since Hondo had already mentioned Hellfighters, we'll have to stay at 36 for now.

But thanks for that input, it is hard to keep track of them all!

(I finally made a list . . . ).

Stacy my mistake Duke doesnt get wet in Stagecoach as he takes a prized position on top of it as it crosses the water. However earlier in the movie he can he seen wipeing sweat of his forehead does this count? :D
