Hi Murray, I have not seen The Last Valley--yet so can't opine on that one but, I can on most of your other choices.
Khartoum was a good Charlton Heston movie and I plan on buying it at some point. Heston did an excellent job as usual ;-))
I can't remember if I saw The Man Who Would Be King? If this movie has Jeffrey Hunter as the Lord Christ? then I have seen and greatly liked this movie.
55 Days AT Peking is an most EXCELLENT movie about the Boxer Rebellion. Many great stars in it including again ;-)) Charlton Heston, David Niven, Harry Andrews, Kurt Kaznar, Ava Gardner and John Ireland.
Never heard of: The Terrorist.
Merrills Marauders is an excellent movie with Jeff Chandler and also has greats like Claude Akins, Ty Hardin and John Hoyt. This is an excellent movie all around. I especially loved the scenes that took place at "Myitkina" (SP?) the words pronounced: mitchinaw.
The Longships is a great movie with Richard Widmark as a Viking, Russ Tamblyn-as another Viking, and Sidney Poitier as a Moorish King.
Never heard of The Viking Sagas-but am interested in knowing more about that movie?
Taras Bulba is a very well made Yul Brynner movie that also has Tony Curtis in it. I saw it twice on TCM over the past few months and liked it more and more each time.
The Sea Wolves is a pretty good movie full of aging "greats."
Never seen the next two on your list.
Pork Chop Hill is an EXCELLENT war movie. Gregory Peck is the lead-along with quite a few recognizable "TV Faces" including: George Peppard, Harry Guardino, Rip Torn, and several others.
The Patriot w/ Mel Gibson was a bit long for me but still held my interests.
Horatio Hornblower-again another great film with Gregory Peck. This is another most excellent movie.
Its been at least 25+++ years since I last saw Breaker Morant and I didn't like it then but im sure I would like it now. The only "star" I remember in the movie was Edward Woodward-whom I like.
chester7777 November 12th, 2009, 01:41 AM I can only report on a few of your selection, as I haven't seen most of them. I have seen The Man Who Would Be King , though many years ago. I do remember Michael Caine , and (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000323/)Sean Connery (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000125/) both did a great job.
Horatio Hornblower a great film with Gregory Peck, a film we have watched numerous times around this household and really enjoy.
The Patriot with Mel Gibson is a movie that you almost have to live in the USA to totally appreciate, as it shows how our Revolution got started, and some of the dynamics that propelled it. It's amazing how handy one can get with a tomahawk. Along with Bravehart one of Mel's best.

Stumpy November 12th, 2009, 05:32 AM Hello All I would appreciate hearing feedback on any or many of the following;

I've seen most of these movies at one time or another and personally, think only "Breaker Morant" and "The Patriot" are outstanding. The rest are so-so. Of the rest, "Pork Chop Hill" and "Horatio Hornblower" were not too bad, though far from Gregory Peck's best. You know what they say though, Murray. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
arthurarnell November 12th, 2009, 10:41 AM Hi Murray
The Long Ships has a fabulous theme and Richard Widmark and Sidney Potier are quite good. This was an early Potier film. There are some far fetched scenes including one where he jumps out of a window in the Med and in the next scene is seen swimming up a Norwegian Fiord. Oscar Homolka give a good semi comedy role as Widmark's father but for me it was the music.
Hornblower one of my all time favourites no arguement there from me.
The Man Who Would Be King based on a Rudyard Kipling story and Christopher Plummer appears a Kipling in the film. Both Connery and Caine are excellent and you imagine that is how the Raj would have been.
The Scarlet and the Black I think with Tom Tyron is based in the Vatican during the German occupation of Italy and shows a cardinal's run in with the Gestapo.
55 days at Peking yes if only for the acting of Heston, and David Niven as the English Ambassador a fine English cast including Flora Robson and Harry Andrews.
On the American side Ava Gardner and John Ireland are pretty good.
Khartum not a bad picture although Heston,s English accent is atrocious, and Lawrence Olivier as the Mad Mahdi is strange casting unless you have seen him as Othello.
Regards
Arthur

The Ringo Kid November 14th, 2009, 01:12 AM One thing I have to ask about 55 Days At Peking. Is this movie FINALLY released on DvD in America? Reason i ask is that I know that IMDB said it was released on DvD but, that DvD release was in China, and I remted it from Netflix. So if anyone knows if there was a release of that great film by some American and or other Major Studios? an inquring mind wants to know ;-))
