View Full Version : Limitation A Serious Problem

We seem to be embrollied in an endless battle to preserve the Dukes legacy and unfortunetly a new problem has arisen. There is a severe shortage of Dukes movies for sale in shops on DVD's and sometimes there are none at all. The problem seems to have been the transistion between VCR and DVD. In the UK Duke was clearly the most popular actor with a vast amount of wide rangeing VCR's of his for sale but since DVD has been intorduced this has not been the case. There is still a great if not greater demand for his movies so why are shops not stocking them.

Also as Chester mentioned in a previous thread Dukes image is hard to come by in the form of posters, over here we get posters of Charlie Chaplin, Di Caprio, Clint, Willis, James Dean, Monroe, Tom Hanks dog but never any of the Duke I have yet to come across one. WHY?

This thread is really about tackleing the issue of what can be done to address this problem and all suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks
Robbie

robbie,

here in aust we have just had 8 jw's released on dvd but they go very quickly and so far i have been only able to get 2 of them, i have to also say that they sell for the average price of A$25 so you can see they aren't as cheep as you can get them. as for his image over here when you go to arts and crafts markets you can always fine something with his image on it be it just a wall plaque or a clock so it must be you may not be looking in the right places or that people just don't want to make things with his image on it. oh by the way if you want to buy a boxed set of jw's movies which contain only 4 of his movies you are looking at paying A$90.

Hi again Robbie,

I agree about the lack of posters and images. Now granted, I haven't been looking for as long as you have, but when I have looked, I haven't been able to find much. I did see a little postcard when I was at Barnes & Noble once; I think the image was from The Cowboys.

I'd actually really like to have a life-size cutout, just for fun - I especially like the one from Hondo. But on all the websites I've looked at, it appears that it's sold out and presumably out of production.

It is puzzling that people like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean continue to be such a presence in the marketplace, especially when you consider that Duke's impact was so much greater. It seems like people really take on legendary icon status when they die suddenly and tragically, like those two did. I guess Duke was too normal and emotionally healthy! :)

Smokey

I was wondering if possible could you provide a link to show some of the DVD covers that you get in Australia the ones over here are pathetic. Chisum has just made it to the shops the VCR cover used to be great the DVD is pathetic and at the back they have credited a Richard Nixon quote to someone else. <_< I also went around six shops locally that sell DVD's and came across two films of the Dukes Chisum and Cast A Giant Shadow. Poster are impossible to get of him I will have to look further afield.

Jen I couldnt agree more with your last paragraph.

hi robbie,

i have only seen the dvd's in our department stores like target, kmart and big w. i will have to see if i can get a link so you can see i just got chisum and have to say the front isn't much but the back has a good photo on it. it appears that the more popular movies have the better covers maybe to get more to buy them.
