Greetings all!
With the Holiday Season coming up, John Wayne movies on DVDs should be announce soon. I expect 2 releases from Artisan as they release Republic Picture movies. With these titles listed, I would like to hear from the members what movies they would like to see released for the '03 season. Pick 2 to 6 as that is the number usually released.

Mine are;

I know the three that I'd like to see released.

1) Shepherd of the Hills
2) The Three Godfathers
3) Trouble Along The Way

I enjoy all three of these very much and would try my best to wear them out. Dukefan1

Baron,

Even though you didn't list this because it is sort of released, I'd like to see the original copy from Batjac Productions of McLintock! from the John Wayne Estates.

So my list goes like this:

1. McLintock!
2. Hondo
3. The Spoilers
4. Trouble Along the Way
5. Pittsburg
6. Fort Apache
7. The Three Godfathers

I know, I know, but I consider this lucky seven for 2003-04.

BTW, Baron, if you look on DeepDiscountDVD.com , you will see a copy of His Private Secretary is out on DVD. Just for you information. Go to http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?ite...temID=CCD001001 (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=CCD001001) That is $5.99 U.S. including shipping. Can't beat that, right Chester? ;)

Hondo, thanks for the tip! Of other listing I found, they don't list this one at all. I wonder why. Oh well, I'll add it to my DVD Profiler site so I don't lose it. :)

Baron,

Funny you should say that. This is the only place I've found it too. It's not on the DVD search site, either. Curiouis! Anyway, let me add that they include an episode of The Lucy Show gust starring John Wayne.

DVD Description
In order to marry the son of a wealthy business magnate, a minister's granddaughter must take a job at her future father-in-law's company to prove herself. Also includes The Lucy Show episode "Lucy and John Wayne".

I think I better get this.

As long as the "Lucy" show is being mentioned, I just have to say how much I love this episode. I think it's always been my favorite one, and that was way before I started this thing for JW. I love the way Duke seems so much himself and so much at ease being funny without looking like he's trying to be funny.

And I've watched it enough times to catch little details, like the way Ricky can't keep a straight face when Fred struts in and calls Duke "Count" or when Lucy shoves her purse on her head to hide her hair rollers and Duke says, "Does she always wear a pocketbook on her head?" You can totally see Ricky struggling not to burst out laughing.

The "rubdown" scene is classic! And then Duke bringing in the extra concrete slabs and the girls trying to kiss him... it's absolutely adorable the way he picks one up in each arm. Mamma mia that's a strong man.

Sorry for the feminine gushing, fellas. Sometimes I can't help it. I honestly hope you don't find it too irritating.

I was pleasantly surprised to see William Frawley (Fred Mertz on "Lucy") in The Flame of Barbary Coast. I didn't realize they'd worked together before, but it looks like he was also in The Fighting Seabees. Maybe there are more that I've missed.

Jen,

You're right that William Frawley was in those two movies. Duke and Frawley were good friends, and Duke was helping Frawley get over an alcohol problem. I think he had something to do with helping Frawley get the part of Fred Mertz on I Love Lucy. ;)

The DVD of His Private Secretary, is showing an episode of The Lucy Show and not I Love Lucy. I just wanted to tell you that in case you are interested in getting this for the Lucy and Ricky show with Duke.

Cheers, Hondo B)

Hey Robbie.

Here is a link to some John Wayne Movie Posters (http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?CID=DF69326B35D2436CB667DF9BD35E21DC&startat=http%3A//www.allposters.com/GetThumb.asp%3FSearch%3DWayne%252C+John%26). They have about 200+ posters. If you are looking for movie posters, they have just a few.

This link, The Nostalgia Factory (http://www.nostalgia.com), has movie posters, lobby cards, and press release books. Prices arn't too bad, I found nothing over $150 and as little as $12. I'm looking for a site I used to have that listed lots of JW movie posters. What are you looking for mostly??

Ahh... thanks for that info on Duke & William Frawley. Interesting!

Thanks also for clarifying about the Lucy episode. Maybe I'll get around to buying the His Private Secretary DVD, but for now I was just looking for an excuse to talk about Duke's guest spot on "I Love Lucy." ;) When you mentioned "The Lucy Show" I forgot that there was indeed a series with that name - don't think it airs very often on TV Land or any of its counterparts.

Man! The wealth of information you guys have astounds me! :uhuh:

Btw, if you ever have a need to address me again, you can just call me "Jen." ;) I don't know what I was thinking picking such a dorky screen name... I guess I didn't know if I'd be staying so it didn't matter much at the time.

Baron,

Below is the description from an auction at Ebay, of two John Ford-directed TV shows that had John Wayne in them. These appear in John Ford's IMDb profile, and there is mention of them in JW's profile at IMDb (Flashing Spikes - 1962, is in the movies section at the top, Rookie of the Year - 1955 - is in Notable TV Guest Appearances at the bottom). I notice you show Rookie of the Year as available on DVD - where would that be? The only one I can find is the 1993 movie of the same title (cute movie, BTW).

O.K. Wait till you hear about this one! This is one tape with two archival TV shows, ABOUT BASEBALL from the 1950's, directed by JOHN FORD. First show is, "Rookie of the Year", starring the DUKE - IN HIS FIRST TV DRAMATIC ROLE!!! In it, he plays a struggling past his prime sports writer, trying to get back to the big-time market by getting the "Big Story". The "Rookie" he discovers is played by non-other than real life son, PATRICK WAYNE (first professional role!!!), who has inadvertently let on, to Duke's character who he really is and how he is so talented, which provides the breaking news story this sports writer has been waiting for!! Also starring JAMES GLEASON, this one is only matched by the next show on this tape! In "Flashing Spikes", an episode of the award winning series, "Premier", hosted by FRED ASTAIR, JIMMY STEWART plays a fictional blacklisted ball player (ala Shoeless Joe Jackson), who aids a young up and coming naive pro baseball star (again Patrick Wayne!), This one is remarkable for many reasons, for instance, how about a very young DON DRYSDALE in his first dramatic role?, or 'Keep your eye on the ump', non other than, no I won't say, but I will say this, it's worth the price of the tape alone!! Also included are former pro baseball stars from before my time! I recognize some of the names in the credits, but I'll let the real baseball fans enjoy talking these guys up! Also starring TIGE ANDREWS, EDGAR BUCHANNON and JACK WARDEN, these TV shows are truly, "Gems From the Vault". HIGHEST QUALITY RECORDING transferred directly from a MASTER off the original print (Film). NOT A DUPE!!! No cover art.

We risked about $25 to find out if it's worth having, we'll let you know in a few weeks, when we've had a chance to receive and watch it.

Chester!

I did find it on a website that "Rookie of the Year" was on DVD. I'm looking for it again and will post it here for all. If I don't find it, then I will post an apology for everyone. It's like "His Private Secratary", it's only at one website so it's would be hard to find.

In the mean time, here is another RARE tv program for you. I don't know if it's available, but it should be very interesting. It's from the The Arizona Game and Fish Department. It's a program shown on TV. Here is the only thing said about it, "The next show in the 13-week series, "This Little Bullet," is piece of television history. This gun safety video starring John Wayne is just as timely and appropriate today as when it was first shown more than 30 years ago." This is a gun saftey program shown in Tuscon, Arizona. Here is the link for you, Arizona Outdoorsman / AZOD (http://www.azod.com/topstory/Archive/2003/Q3/Elk%20and%20John%20Wayne%20of%20Wildlife%20Views%2 0TV.htm). I wish I could be there so that I could record this for myself. This is one I didn't know about, but just happened on! You might try to find out when they are showing it again or if they might sell a video of it. It is reported last shown in August. If I find anything else, I'll post it here.

The 7 Episode is "This Little Bullet" here is another link to check out. Scroll down to Episode 7 for more info. (http://www.gf.state.az.us/i_e/awv_tv_shows.html)

Enjoy! :cowboy:

Good evening, all!

That description is of a video that was on auction on Ebay, and even though it was a little pricey, I decided to go for it (hey, I spent that much on Tigrero, and at least this video was actually a JW movie - actually two). Anyway, it arrived yesterday, and we had a chance to watch it tonight. It was pretty good!

If you love baseball and John Wayne (and enjoy some of the other actors that you've come to enjoy with him), these two shows are for you.

Rookie of the Year also has Ward Bond and Vera Miles. It was a thirty minute show, and my wife and I, along with the 7 year old son, really enjoyed it.

Flashing Spikes was about an hour long, and a pretty engaging story. Patrick Wayne and James Stewart were the main stars, but also in it, in bit parts, were Harry Carey Jr. and John Wayne (credited as Michael Morrison).

Both of these were directed by John Ford.

The tape was good quality, and is packaged by a company called Hollywood's Attic, which indicates on the back of the box (which is generic - the tape itself had the movie info on it) that they also carry Classics, Westerns, Foreign Films, Documentaries, Serials, Black Artists of the Silver Screen, and Family Films.

Perhaps this is available at a better price someplace else, but I feel I definitely got my money's worth. (Anybody want to buy a slightly used copy of Tigrero :uhuh: ?)

Hey Chester, I offer an apology on the Rookie of the Year. I have seen it listed as a DVD, but now the website I found it no longer has it posted as such. :( This happens every once and a while, same thing was done last year about Circus World. Oh well.

Right now I'm trying to bid on JW movie, The Sea Spoilers, but I keep getting outbid! Soon though!

I'm very frustrated with VHS right now, as my VCR just ate my recorded copies of Allegheny Uprising & Trouble Along the Way. Man, I am going to have to buy a DVD-R and record them on those! Bummer!

Our (old, junky, bought-at-a-yardsale-for-$10) VCR started eating tapes last week. Munched the kids' copy of Curious George, and almost did in a rental video, but on that one, I fast forwarded it and reversed it a couple of times and was able to pull it out of those vicious teeth and save it B) ! Whew!

Went to Costco and bought a combo VCR/DVD/CD player, Panasonic, for a little over $100! What a relief! I think I'd like to have my JW tapes on DVD also for watching, then keep them in my collection sans "teeth" marks.

I just ordered His Private Secretary from DeepDiscountDVD.com for $5.99. It should be here by next Monday. Yes, this is on DVD.

I haven't purchased a VHS movie since 1997. My VHS machine was purchased back in 1992, and it is not in good shape. I will not play any Duke movies on this player, because of the fear of jamming the tape, like you did Baron. I have 73 Duke movies on VHS ("A" movies), and I want to keep them in great shape. Until I get a new player, there will be no movie played. VHS players are under $100, so it's a matter of time before I get one, or maybe get that DVD-ROM to convert my movies into DVD, like Hondo, Pittsburg, Trouble Along the Way, The Spoilers, Tall in the Saddle, Fort Apache, and the Official John Wayne release of McLintock!

Cheers, Hondo B)

I was thinkin' (which is a dangerous thing to do!), why not start another topic, DVD Reveiw. Post a picture of a John Wayne DVD and tell everyone about it. How is the sound, the picture quality, the extras. Is the story any good. That way others will know about it if it's any good. What do you think? I have one I'll post, King of the Pecos. Just let me know!

I thought this thread might be a fitting place to post a few questions. First of all because it might be fun to reflect over what has happened the last year. I don't know what which movies have been released in America since this topic was started (too much back and forth comparing lists), but in Europe there has been an astounding amounts of releases, espescially after the box set from Universal due 22. of November. After this is released there will be about 20 of the movies on BvR original list that will be available here. Most of them in this box set, but some are also available separately. Oddly enough it seems to me that after this is released there will actually be more John Wayne movies available in region 2 than in region 1! I used Baron von Rassilons web page as a reference. Maybe John Wayne is more popular in Europe than in America? :D

Well to address the original question I would of course want to see the movies that other people on this message board have spoken so warmly about and I have not seen. This would be Island in the Sky, Hondo and The High and the Mighty. These movies have been thoroughly discussed before however, but looking through the list over unavailable movies I was wondering if anyone had any information on these movies.

1952 - BIG JIM McLAIN
1953 - TROUBLE ALONG THE WAY
1955 - BLOOD ALLEY
1955 - THE SEA CHASE
1957 - THE WINGS OF EAGLES
1958 - THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA
1973 - THE TRAIN ROBBERS
1974 - MCQ

Since these movies are relatively "new" and almost all of them are released on video I was wondering if it was just a matter of assumed demand or if there were any other issues involved here?

Hi popol vuh

The movie you list have all been issued in England at some time or another but as far as I knoe not in DVD format. I don't think there are any issues but they represent some of the less popular of the Dukes pictures, although personally I liked Trouble Along the Way as one of his more gentle pictures.
The Sea Chase was available in VHS some years ago at a real knockdown price in one of the cheaper stores, the quality was probably reasonable but how long it will last is anyone's guess.

As for the rest I can't see any that haven't been released in VHS.
