View Full Version : Worst Lines

Duke had many great lines in his movies but he also had some dire ones. This question is not meant to discredit the Duke in any way it is just meant as a little bit of fun to break the mould as there are plenty of heavy topics on the board at the moment which is good to see.

The Question is this what is your least favourite John Wayne line or speech and why.

Heres mine and it is from "The Green Berets"

Several explosions go off inside the Green Beret camp and after the third goes off Duke says really really stupidly "I think they've stopped" The line and the delivery is just awful in my opinion.

Looking foward to hearing your responces.

Robbie,

I guess anybody who's made almost 180 movies is entitled to some bad lines!

Honestly, off the top of my head, I can't think of any right now, but I'll be on the lookout for them now that you've brought the idea to my attention.

:D

Robbie, this is a fun topic. I wish I could think of some offhand but I can't. Like Chester, I will definitely be on the lookout. I can think of a couple of scenes that haven't rung very true to me... for example, I find it a bit much the way he grabs Mrs. Lowell so suddenly in Hondo and begins wooing her. I have to be honest - when I first saw it it made me giggle. Sometimes it's not his fault; you've gotta blame whoever wrote the dialogue too.

To be honest with you, I didn't really like that entire movie all that much. Duke did a really good job and electrified the screen as usual, but the whole thing - the cinematography and the music - it felt like a long episode of Bonanza or Gunsmoke or something.

Wow Jen Hondos a pretty decent movie although now you mention it Duke messes up one of his lines when mentioning an Indian chief has been killed.

'Yes everbody gets dead'

I feel this line sounds wrong

Now everyone get posting again this is only meant as a fun topic.

Sorry, Robbie. Didn't mean to bash Hondo, it just didn't turn my page... I liked Duke, though.

A lot of it had to do with the way I watched it, maybe. It was a crummy old copy from the library and had seen better days.

Okay, here's one that I've always found pretty ridiculous. It's not one line but a little speech about the glories of beef. Now, I like beef as much as the next red-blooded American chicky-poo, but this really seems a bit much. Robert Mitchum could've used it in his "Beef: It's what's for dinner" ads. :P

"The big house will be down by the river and the corrals and the barns behind it. It'll be a good place to live in. Ten years and I'll have the Red River D on more cattle than you've looked at anywhere. I'll have that brand on enough beef to feed the whole country. Good beef for hungry people. Beef to make 'em strong and make 'em grow. But it takes work and it takes sweat and it takes time. Lots of time. It takes years."

Uttered by Mr. Tom Dunson in Red River, of course.

Hey, here's another "golden oldie" I think we can probably have some fun with! I had forgotten about it, but I'll be watching with "new ears" listening for "bad" lines.

You only have to go to the worst movie, for the worst lines,

No guessing which, take a look at these,

Bortai:" For me, there is no peace while you live, Mongol."
Temujin: "You're beautiful in your wrath".

" I feel this Tartar woman is for me,
and my blood says, take her.
There are moments for wisdom and moments
when I listen to my blood; my blood says,
take this Tartar woman".

" Dance for me, Tartar woman".

" We'll chase them like rats across the tundra".

And no parent can relax and no girl is safe,
with Duke the Mongol around!!

!While I live, while my blood burns hot, your daughter is not safe in her tent".

I have to go back to The Green Berets again.

When the cong are attacking the fort, there is mortar fire. Duke climbs a observation post and a mortar/explosion takes the tower down. After they clear everybody out from the tower that has toppled. Duke says---

"Fall back, fall back!!"

Well duh!!!!

"I'm gonna pile up the Southern Cross"

one of the worst lines to ever come out of John Wayne's mouth, in Reap the Wild Wind

Makes me sick:thumbs_down::cry2:

Even Duke at his best would, have to be tough, when surrounded by
thousands of his enemies!!

Come and take me, mongrels - if you dare.
While I have fingers to grasp a sword,
and eyes to see your cowardly faces,
your treacherous heads will not be safe on your shoulders.
For I am Temujin, the Conqueror.
No prison can hold me, no army defeat me.

These remind me of a line in Reap the Wild Wind, when Duke says to Loxi, "You're in my blood, Loxi, just like the sea!" Especially corny since he's only known here a matter of hours, it seems.

Let us not forget the worst ever line he uttered!

Truly, this man was the son of God.

Here is a little Story that some of Duke's Friends Like Jimmy Stewart and Ward Bond liked to tell on Duke at the Hollywood Events.

When they were doing the Film "The Greatest Story Ever Told," Duke was Playing a Roman Centution and the Origial Line that He was to say was "Truly, There Goes The The Son Of God !"

After the first take the Director George Stevens said, "Hey Duke , put some Awe into it !"

Duke nodded OK, then delivered His Line, "Awww, Truly there Goes The Son Of God !!!"
The Cast and Crew all had a Big Laugh.

Here's a a couple from Cahill,

J.D. Cahill:
My apologies, ma'am. Slight negligence in his upbringing.

J.D. Cahill:
Mister, I ain't got a bigoted bone in my body.
You don't drop that axe I'll blast you to hell
as quick as I would a white man.

Lightfoot:
Give me my five dollars. If you get shot tonight, I'll disappear.
Oh, I'll come back and bury you...
and mumble something Christian over your grave.
J.D. Cahill: Lightfoot, your kindness overwhelms me.

The ones from the Conqueror were even funnier. Shame they weren't meant to be. Anyway I still like the Conqueror. I don't think to much about the corny way they try to make it sound like an old Mongol accent. It's a decent action movie.

The entire script of Jet Pilot aparting from the plane sequences would get my vote.

You know Mike, I looked at that one,
so thanks for mentioning it!!
When I was doing my original research
on the Movie Review, it didn't include
any 'Quotes'
Why, because as you quite rightly say,
the WHOLE script was BAD!

I liked Jet Pilot too... all his movies can't be as good as True Grit. And in the film where he keeps saying, "That'll be the day" over and over and over and over and over. One or twice was funny but throughout the whole movie. Please!

He only says 'That'll be the day' four times in the entire movie and the line is very effective. Not only this but it have become a classic and even inspired a hit song from Buddy Holly, I can't believe that its been included in a thread relating to Dukes worst lines.

But as I said in an earlier thread, to each their own.

Thanks Chester;

Its To Bad that Some Of "You Land Lubbers" have not spent as much time in Those Great Old Jet Aircraft as I did in my 60 years of Flying most of those Great Old Jets !!!

I must admit the Story Line is Not all that Good, But it was Hard to BEAT HOWARD HUGHES in his Air Filming of the Jet Aircraft in "Jet Pilot," and for Us Old Guys, Janet Leigh was Not Bad at all as the Russian Jet Pilot !

I'm amazed to see how many people are down on the Conqueror!
It had some good fight scenes! I dealt kindly with this oathe! Look my brother excersises himself! Kumlek's daughter? SPORN OF EVIL! Let your slaves have their sport with her!
