View Full Version : What Is It About The Duke That Makes You Love And Admire Him?

To this day, when I see The Duke perform, I am filled with loving adoration for him. I can't help it. I just know that I wish with all my heart I had known him while he was here. I can only hope that as an angel, he somehow knows how beloved he is, now and always.

Stagecoach is on TCM right now, and though I've seen it many times before, I'm riveted. I've often asked myself why it is that he inspires this welling of deep emotion in me. Why I feel so comforted to see his face, hear his voice, and why I wish I could tell him what I'm saying to you now.

There's something good in him that shines from his countenance. Something in him that draws love and loyalty from you just naturally. It isn't easy to put these feelings into words, so I'm putting this question to you who love him as I do: What is it about him that makes you feel this way?

Blessings,

Kcat

I can't say it any better than what Maureen said at the congressional hearing which she and Elizabeth Taylor attended to plead for award of a John Wayne Congressional Gold Medal.

And that was "John Wayne; American".

She meant that he personified the qualities of character that made our country the greatest in the world. I think that's the main reason he's still so popular with many Americans; he stands for the kind of values we as a nation once had that made this country second to none.

Ah, yes. So true. He does inspire us to be our best selves. It would be great to hear from more folks on the JWMB how The Duke has inspired them to be their best, as well as what else it is about him that makes them love him!

Well I could tell you what my father said to me when I told him I had joined the Marines. Bill he said " I Think you've seen too many John Wayne movies".
All I can say is after watching a Wayne film I feel proud and good inside.I don't know how else to express it.
PS. My Dad was my real number one hero. But Duke a close second.

I'm betting your Dad and The Duke both would say they are proud of you!

This reminds me of a question posted here around the time that I joined, but, I love having another chance to express my feelings for Duke. His voice soothes me. I feel safe and like all is right with the world when I am watching him and hearing that voice. He said what was on his mind and I truly admire that in a person. He was fearless, even if he was afraid, not only in the movies, but, in his own life as he battled cancer for so many years. He was unstoppable and one of the hardest workers I have ever known. He loved deeply even if he had a difficult time showing it. He was all that I would like to see in a man and he liked a woman to be a real lady, with class and grace. He was a big part of the years of my life, those that would be considered, the home that we cannot go back to...But each time I hear his voice and see that handsome face, I AM HOME!

Thank you, Cindy. Your words describe so much of what I feel. (I've never come across this kind of question here, but whenever it was that you saw it, maybe it's good to have a fresh take on it now.)

Yes, "I am home" really hits home in how he makes us feel. I really appreciate this.

It's comforting to hear the kind words folks are responding with. Thanks again.

I like Duke because he wasn't a fake. What you saw on screen or in real life was who he was. He said things as they needed to be said and never apologized for it. I admire that.

It's a show of admiration when people name their children after a roll he played. I also have 1 child with a name from a Duke film. My son's name is Jon Bernard after J. B. Books from The Shootist. The only way I got his mother to agree to it was to spell his first name Jon instead of John. I gave in.

These beautiful, heartfelt tributes to The Duke are poignant and wonderful. I believe that he reads them right along with all of us from his home in Heaven.

I was only about 8 when JW pasted, I was a fan before and still now for me I love the Duke because he reminds me of of dad they both could be tough and mean when the situation called for it and a teddy bear when it didn't. All Waynes characters had one thing in common they did not take any c*** of anyone I wish I could remember JW saying about (I wont be wronged, I wont be laid a hand on etc)? that was my dad in a nut shell, I will miss them both.

John Wayne pasted about 9 years before I was born but my dad grew up on his movies and had a number of them that I would watch with him growing up. As i got older and started to have the money to buy my own movies I started to collect more and more of his movies. Along with that I started to read and search the internet for as much info on him that I could. The more I learned about the person that John Wayne was the more I grew to admire that person and see more and more similarities between him and my dad. It is because of these things that I love and Admire John Wayne.

You know there is only one bad thing about being such a fan, i dont think i ever really enjoy any other movies as much as i do watching all of his, some do get halfway, others a little further, we really love watching his movies, there is just something extra great about them that i cant actually find the words for .

I've answered this question many times here on this message board, and I truely admire him a lot. I wish he was still around today, but I know he would be disappointed in what has happened to this country today. Both Democrate and Republican parties in my opinion have messed this country up, and Duke would be madder than heck at it. I admire him because he sees this country as a land of opportunity for all people and I mean ALL.

No interference with anybody and that includes the government, and corporations. We live here because we do have a dream to better ourselves. In many of his movies, he reflects on those values. I believe that he is not acting when he talks about the good that this land has, or the people who want to fulfill their dreams.

You ask me why, I admire John Wayne? Because this is bigger than anything on earth. He knew it and I know that it was his dream to see it through. And that is freedom and liberty. You need to see McLintock!, The Alamo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Green Berets, Rio Lobo, and Hondo. Those lines throughout the movies say a lot. Maybe someday, soon I will pick out those lines and let Duke speak for himself on why this country is great and how he has faith in people. Oh, by the way, you may want to see the video (DVD) of John Wayne's Tribute to America and listen to the CD, America, Why I Love Her! They may answer your question as to why you admire him.

Cheers  Hondo Duke Lane

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on The Duke here. It's good to read what everyone is saying, and for folks to share how they feel about him currently even if they've mentioned similar feelings before, because of how life changes us. It seems our love, admiration, and respect for The Duke only deepens as time goes by.

Yes, the movies you mention are wonderful reminders, and thanks for listing them here.

God Bless America, and God Bless John Wayne!

And the Bliss package took another serious turn last night, i got the "Commancheros" in my bliss package a few days ago, and got only a small bit into it, and woke up 3 hours later !!

And no reflection on the great movie, that's why i got it out again. Actually you know i have not watched Green Beret, in fact, the truth is, its such a long time since i have watched any movies that are not Westerns.

I guess i have my faves
Duke
J Stewart
G Peck
W brennan in all of them,
and when you step down to watch others i guess sometimes you feel a little short changed

Recently a remake of "The Alamo" was on, i recorded it, but really i actually couldnt bring myself to watch more than 10 mins of it . Is this a common afliction.

The Duke put heart and soul into "The Alamo". No remake could begin to compare!
